Another case where my advanced years are an advantage: I saw him play live. I'm very glad I took the opportunity, on his last tour, even though he was past his best.

so here i am fact-checking style for the spelling of T.Rex for the book i'm editing, and yes, in general the LP covers use a full stop so that's what it is
and it just struck me how funny this bandname is, like when a little kid has learned you can use a full stop to write the shortening and then on a drawing there isn't room for the whole word (or else they're not quite sure how to spell it and this is a workaround)
everyone calls the dinosaur t.rex now, well, marc bolan made it ok to do that!
― mark s, Friday, 12 April 2024 09:32 (two years ago)
Somewhat surprised to see Trex is still exists.
― My God's got no nose... (Tom D.), Friday, 12 April 2024 10:51 (two years ago)
.... ignore the 'is'.
Abbreviating the first part of the binomial is scientific convention tho cf E. coli so ppl would have been calling the dino T. rex before bolan changed the name of the band
― subpost master (wins), Friday, 12 April 2024 11:01 (two years ago)
so yr saying that bolan made it ok to be a nerd
― mark s, Friday, 12 April 2024 11:19 (two years ago)
also this v good blog (in a poorly structured post) says im correct: http://dinogoss.blogspot.com/2013/08/did-jurassic-park-name-t-rex.html
e.coli was my gran's name for the very extremely ancient manky and chipped wooden spoon that my mum liked to cook with (it "improved the flavour")
gnna tell me kids that it stands for erannosaurus coli
― mark s, Friday, 12 April 2024 12:37 (two years ago)
So it was T. visconti!
― subpost master (wins), Friday, 12 April 2024 16:03 (two years ago)
Bolan was no fool.** Without the full stop inserted everyone would pronounce it 'treks', losing all the connotations of being a badass band!
**Statement not verifiable.
