Lesbians' outness

I have not come across nearly as many gay women as men. Why are they less visible, or are there just fewer of them?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:26 (twenty-three years ago)

What unfortunate wording - Dan Perry to thread!

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

*ding*

I don't think you'll find many gay WOMEN at a bathhouse, N, no matter how intently you peer through the steam.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank goodness you said 'peer'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:34 (twenty-three years ago)

(Ned clearly hasn't fully parsed the original sentence.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I have.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

(Ned clearly hasn't fully parsed the original sentence.)

I must disagree.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway, on a non-filthy note, I amused by the idea of legions of invisible gay women pointing at N and laughing as he walks down the street with a puzzled expression on his face.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

mmmmmmmmm................invisible gay women

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

not just that, but invisible pointing gay women

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Less visible because:
Separatist lesbians shun male company and are therefore not visible
Femme lesbians are are invisibly lesbian
Butch lesbians are invisible

Also, content, coupled lesbians don't get out much.

And there's less of them.

toraneko (toraneko), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 05:08 (twenty-three years ago)

N., come up to Camden sometime for the seafood mamas

dave q, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 07:24 (twenty-three years ago)

camden...! seventh heaven with lesbians??

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 07:27 (twenty-three years ago)

di they're all goths, it's no fun

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 07:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's important to fine-tune your gaydar every so often. Like white balancing for sexuality. So maybe you need to loiter outside a lesbian bar for a while.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 07:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess that as well as street spotter's guiding, I also meant people who just let you know that they are gay.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

mmmmm, while I agree with the basic proposition of this thread - that there seem to be more male homosexuals than lesbians - I know way more lesbians than male homosexuals. But this is too small a sample from which to generalise.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Obviously I can't generalise from my experience either because I live in Brighton. I know plenty of 'out' lesbians, though they're not all flagrant, granted. But then being 'out' doesn't have to mean 'telling everyone you meet that you are gay', does it?

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

As far as I remember there are only one or two specifically lesbian bars in the country, and they're all in London. I think there's a gay club in Glasgow that has a women-only night though; N. could lurk outside and count them or something.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks. I'll do that.

To put it another way, how many famous lesbians can you name, compared to famous gay men?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

There is at least one lesbian bar in Brighton too, Caitlin. Not much use to Nick though, if indeed he is actually interested enough to carry out street surveys.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I am.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Archel: I shall remember that if I ever visit :-)

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Moira Stewart, Pat from Eastenders, Rhona Cameron, Sue Perkins, Jackie Clune until she started seeing that bloke, thingy in Ash, half of Echobelly.

Granted, its not a big list.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

In the US I can only think of Ellen Degenerate. And maybe Jodie Foster and Roseanne Barr but I'm not sure about those two. Then there's KD Lang.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and Brett Anderson.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Skin from Skunk Anansie.

TATU!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

[insert hilarious skin<=>lint joke here]

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Sandi Toksvig?

katie (katie), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I was trying not to think of Toksvig.

Damn you Ktee.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

To put it another way, how many famous lesbians can you name, compared to famous gay men?

Pink? Xtina? AFAIK they're not "out," but speculations run rampant.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry ptee!

katie (katie), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

at highschool there was not one single out gay male but almost every girl was a lesbian

minna (minna), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, but were they really lesbians or just part of the mock lesbian menace?

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Mock lesbians are a menace?

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes. See threads passim.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Get thee to Hebden Bridge or Stoke Newington.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Miriam Margoyles is a big ol' lesbian as well. So there's another one.

Allegedly Gillian Anderson as well, but that's for others to decide.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

You don't think that's best left up to Gillian herself, Dom?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Been there done that. Yes, I did see plenty of women together in Stoke Newington.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I cannot believe you started this thread due to your recent escape from Stoic Newington.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

But I knew that was a special enclave. I'm not really talking about spotting people 'being gay' in the street. It was more about people I come across in some social context (through work, friends, on telly if that counts) being openly gay.

I did not mean for it to be a 'Look - there's a lesbian, what about her?' session. Toraneko's post was the kind of thing I was after.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

N: BEHIND YOU!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's important to fine-tune your gaydar every so often. Like white balancing for sexuality. So maybe you need to loiter outside a lesbian bar for a while.

Come visit Northampton,MA. You will fine tune very quickly..

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Northhampton is the only place I've seen a "Womyn's Music" section in a record store. You have a really nice concert hall, BTW.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Hilary Clinton, Cherie Blair and Carole Caplin?

dave q, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Oddly, there was a time for me a little while ago where it seemed like any woman not bisexual was highly unusual. I'm not sure where this gets us...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

To put it another way, how many famous lesbians can you name, compared to famous gay men?

I've noticed that there seems to be alot more comic book stories about lesbians than about gay men; also, slightly more lesbian characters on TV/in the movies than homosexuals. Both of these factors may be more due to the fact that lesbianism between attractive women in fiction is a great way to pull in heterosexual male readers/viewers than anything else (I'm as guilty as anyone, I s'pose, tho really, it's not like any of the lesbians I've talked to about the subject are complaining)

TATU!

They claim they're not.

Pink? Xtina? AFAIK they're not "out," but speculations run rampant.

They admitted to kissing each other. No tongue, tho.
