Boston bound

Monday next I'm off to Boston for 4 days. Work, sadly, but this time no dodgy colleagues in tow (remember last years NY trip when BA lost my bags?). I won't propose a FAP with any Boston ILX-ers, as I will be quite busy and can't be guaranteed to not let you down, but maybe you can help me...

...are there any decent record shops or bookshops in Needham, which is where I'll be working most of the time. I doubt I'll get downtown unless my schedule changes. In case I do - some recommendations there would be good. Thanks!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Needham? I have no idea. There might be a Newbury Comics there...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yup there is a newbury comix, right off of 128 i think. and a "do it yourself elctronics" (yeah the thats the name of it) if you're a tech*junkie.
as for record stores in boston. there is mystery train in harvard square. sadly, other music is long gone. the brattle bookshop is a good place. goto bostonphoenix.com, they might have some good links.
i will list other stores when i get home perhaps.

You also might want to keep an eye out for the various CD Spins scattered throughout the area (Newbury St, Winter St, Harvard Sq).

As far as bookstores... There's the Trident on Newbury, Wordsworth in Harvard Square, and your friendly neighborhood chains Borders (Cambridgeside Galleria) and Barnes and Noble (Downtown Crossing, Prudential Center).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

geeta, Thursday, 9 January 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

ARGH. I, of course, am leaving town tomorrow and have to organize stuff at home tonight as a result.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

say hey to dan perry and dave popshots for me!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 9 January 2003 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

IN Boston proper there is a Nuggets, which has a collection of eighties vinyl that is quite extensive and variously useless.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Thursday, 9 January 2003 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Go to Twisted Village 12 Elliot St. Harvard Square.

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 10 January 2003 00:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, Tad, if only I were actually living in Boston. I used to go there way more than I should (given I live 2+ hours away), but I haven't been in nearly 9 months!

But this is a thread about Dr. C having fun in Needham.

Dr. C, have fun in Needham!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 January 2003 02:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks everyone - looks like I might have to sneak downtown at some point if I want to shop. What's public transport(ation) like there? Is it easy to get from Needham to the centre? Sadly I don't think I'll have use of a car.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 January 2003 09:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i have no idea where needham is dr. c but i think it's a pretty sleepy little burg...from there you can probably take the commuter rail to boston; it's not a very long trip i think (less than an hour?)

geeta, Friday, 10 January 2003 09:45 (twenty-three years ago)

if you do go into boston proper then the end of newbury st near hynes/ica (east i think - sorry my geography is crap) is yr best bet for 2nd hand cd shops. take a look in the time out guide to boston, i think it lists a few of the cd shops on neighbouring sts, and the rest are all crammed together on newbury st itself.

i actually got all my best buys in harvard sqaure though. if you want to persue that option then planet records = great, also twisted village = ace for free jazz/psych rock etc (but may not be yr sort of thing?), the newbury comics is quite good, and there's some other ok shops too. easiest way to find them = nip into a bookstore (eg harvard bookstore) + open up a copy of the harvard alternative prospectus - that lists all the record shops around there (and quite a few downtown come to think of it).

also if you go to harvard sq then get a sandwich from darwin's on mount aubern st.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 10 January 2003 09:52 (twenty-three years ago)

psych rock - yes! free jazz - no ta!

Thanks Toby.

I'm here! Random thoughts - i saw the most grotesque commercial on TV. It was for a special oven that can roast 4 big chickens at once -or a HUGE turkey. Or maybe a pet or a small child? More later.

The sound of US rock is the final dying MOO of a diseased cow. Even the 'quality' end, like Queens of The Stone Age, is so totally, irredeemably useless that you really have to feel some pity for the poor fools. I saw Billy Corgan on a music chat thing - what a pompous fool.

The man leading the conference here has piggy eyes. And keeps quoting lyrics from songs. He is a fool.

Until tomorrow...

How's Needham? Frightening and suburban?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Key question: is the city centre all made of wood?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Boston Suxor.

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's the URL to the, uh, harvard alternative prospectus:

http://www.unofficialharvard.com/

you can look through it's guide to music shops there.

Ah, good to have you back. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Reporting back to the ILX mothership :

Needham is shit - offices and (spits) a business park and a giant petfood superstore is all I can see. I doubt that I will get to a recd shop now.

I have a hangover - I had much Sam Adams and red wine last night in the company of some delightful and amusing gurls from advertising and PR companies. They made me drink, you understand - I really didn't want to. I want to form a band with all of them in it.

I have been listening to Ladytron and am 75% convinced now that their new album is a work of genius.

Off to get coffee now. Can you buy RESOLVE here? I need it.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Needham is a bit outside of Boston. Lotsa car dealerships. It'll take you a good 20-30 minute car ride to get near anything halfway cool.

One thing to do in the next town over (Dedham) is go to the Museum of Bad Art.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Resolve should be readily available at most supermarkets/pharmacies.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I need to get back to Boston again. I really do. Dang.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Resolve should be readily available at most supermarkets/pharmacies.

ISn't there a Stop and Shop in Needham. As in like the one from "gonna drive past the Stop n Shop ... with the radio on...128 when it's dark outside..."

also uh the commuter T line goes right from there into boston in no time for low cost. i guess it depends how far you are from one of the stations

Mat Bo (Mat Bo), Thursday, 16 January 2003 07:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Needham - the last hours. This really is a hole. A week in Luton couldn't be worse. We're working so late I haven't had time to go 'downtown' (as I think you Americans say).

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheer up, Dr.C - some good news awaits yr return (on ILM)!

Jeff W, Thursday, 16 January 2003 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

What is it Jeff - I had a quick look and can't find nowt.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The Passage

(scroll down to 11 Jan)

Jeff W, Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Quite so, Dr. C. I think you have an interest in this. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Not really

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Only joking - I DID post on this. Ages ago on the LTM thread - they announced these re-issues in Dec. It's good news - yes indeed.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

call all destroyer, Monday, 9 May 2011 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

i got bounced from a lucky star on a rainy-ass sunday when i was trying to get home from nyc so i take bolt or mega now.

call all destroyer, Monday, 9 May 2011 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the wifi is prob worth it. was thinking either bolt or mega, wifi's pretty key for 4 hour trips.

iatee, Monday, 9 May 2011 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

also I think they have a statistical edge in not crashing

iatee, Monday, 9 May 2011 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

nine months pass...

My wife is in Boston. It's Valentine's Day. Our first one apart since 2001, when we were apart because we didn't know each other.
