TS: Ros Na Run vs. Fair City

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 11 January 2003 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

no, i think it was a flop. Did somebody say: "Glenroe"?

Also, "Hot Milk and Pepper". What was the name of that baldy fuckwit that presented it? He was a fucking wanker!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 11 January 2003 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Soaps don't count; they're 2 dull. Same wit mediocre music progs.

louise, Saturday, 11 January 2003 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i used to watch the sunday game a bit, as a wee lad. my interest in gaelic and hurling has waned a bit, though. my county = co.wicklow

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 11 January 2003 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

"what has ireland been hiding thats so terrible?"

well, there was this show called upwardly mobile...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 11 January 2003 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

...and "The Lyrics Board." And let's not forget Kenny Live...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 11 January 2003 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, another fucking one, Don't Feed The Gondolas.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 12 January 2003 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, Irish pedestrian safety ads: C/D? I have been fondling wit da idea of a equivalent ad relating to leaked gas. The song's "I wanta smoke a fag, doo doo do-do doo doo..." and a teenager's in his garage and there's a close up of a cooker. He's smilimg at a girl he fancies across the road and sending her a txt msg but then he lights a cigarette and BOOSH! The house explodes and it shows the mobile flying into the air and the girl reaching her arm out in distress/cut to funeral scene.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 12 January 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The latest GAA advert has hurlers playing backwards to "Work it"!

You all forgot "The Murphys" or whatever that sitcom Ed Byrne wrote was called. And then there was that other comedy show from Jason Byrne...Plank Kenny is such a weak chat show host I fear he may disintegrate in his seat.

TS:Marty Whelan .v. Pat Kenny?

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 12 January 2003 04:13 (twenty-three years ago)

how about Winning Streak.

Marty Whelan is far more preferable than Pat Kenny. Kenny is Alan Partridge.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 12 January 2003 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

''R u pro-gaelic footie, julio?''

I like all TV team sport actually. C4 used to show gaellic football on sat morinings but then they stoppped. now i think they follow the car racing/rallies and get some good looking girls to present it. girls and cars! no fair...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 12 January 2003 12:08 (twenty-three years ago)

TS: Marty Whelan vs Mike Murphy

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 12 January 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Whelan's pretty weak but he maybe a genius interviewer.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 12 January 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike Murphy was a smug prick. Far worse than Marty Whelan.

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 12 January 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha I keep seeing Marty Whelan around my town, I like to shout "oh you're a vip arent you, a V.I.P.".

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 12 January 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

are all the byrnes related? the worst is gabriel obv: world class rub up there with nick broomfield

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 12 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

No there are just millions of byrnes. Gabriel in "Into The West", hilarious.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 12 January 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm obligated to mention Leave It To Mrs. O'Brien, though I've never seen it myself. The Ed Byrne clanger was The Cassidys. And how about The Beat Box? You have your Ian Dempsey years, and your Simon Young / Peter Collins years, compare and contrast. Ahh, nothing like getting up early on a Sunday for your Two Hour Hate.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 13 January 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

we only ever got gay byrne's late late show over here (it used to be on at 2 in the afternoon) and that was pretty dismal in a non-ironic way.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 13 January 2003 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

and you got the edited highlights.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 13 January 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
REVIVE.

Come on folks, who the fuck writes "Fair City". It seems like the writers are Irish equivalents of that sassy Simpsons woman, the one in the Malibu Stacey factory etc.

Also where is Naked as Sin these days?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Four Words - "The House Of Love". See when they gave the losing couple a prize of a couple of nights at some renovated Fire Station in Dalkey? Those kids just stared into the camera with their cold, dead eyes, slack-jawed like "what the fuck" and then Moncrieff looked nervously into the camera and then they cut away. I just crumbled up. I mean how Irish is that anyway, a prize of a HOUSE. For fucks sake.

Michael B, Monday, 19 January 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Watched 'You're A Star' for the first time last night and its pretty crap. THe bitter old crone is such a shitty equivalent to Simon Cowell: no track record of hits, no millions in the bank, just some half-baked ideas about representing the country with an Irish accent, as if anyone wants to hear Sweet Home Alabama sung in a Limerick city twang

fcussen (Burger), Monday, 19 January 2004 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't Feed The Gondolas

This must have been shown over here, as I've seen it. It was a bit shit as I remember.

Gay Byrne is probably best known over here for infinite repeats of Boyzone being arses on his TV show. His show used to be in the post-Countdown Richard-and-Judy slot on Channel 4, I think, and I'm sure I watched it and remember nothing of it except that it was like a low-rent Wogan.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 19 January 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan, did you see the fair city episodes where the cult members wanted to lure the teenage boy away from his family?

"United we are strong. UNITED WE ARE STRONG!!!"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 19 January 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a cult in Fair City now!? Well Holy God sez Miley...

Michael B, Monday, 19 January 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

'The Premiership' is the Irish program that annoys me the most. Every week it seems to get more and more sloppy and uninterested. The presenter this week (Peter Collins) obviously has no interest in football. His only comment at the end of the Leicester 3, Middlesbrough 3 game was "Six goals, yes that's very unusual". During the roundup section we find out about Steve(sic) Malbranque, and that Marcus Stewart plays for Charlton. And they never seem to be able to get the tape running properly during the analysis bit.

By the way, 'Apres Match' C/D? Apart from the Dunphy as Keane/Tommy Gorman interview, I've never found it that funny.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Monday, 19 January 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

But at least The Premiership shows the goals three hours b4 British tv does.

Michael B, Monday, 19 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The other day before the Celtic match Peter Collins was talking about Hearts being in crisis and then, on them moving to Murrayfield, "but isn't Murrayfield a sort of, rugger old chap type thnig, stadium? you know? John Giles????"

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair City cult was brilliant! "FOLLOW THE LIGHT, WE WILL FOLLOW. THE LIGHT". So lame and dated.

Also in Fair City they never do anything except sit in the pub or the cafe or the restaurant, that is where every conversation takes place.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

as an adjunct to the bbc thread. i'll take exception to the criticism of the premiership, which is probably the most entertaining thing on irish telly. can't speak for the drama content, i've never really liked any rte comedy. news and current affairs is pretty good.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

RTE gets shown in my local Irish boozer pretty much nonstop if the footie's not on, and it seems to largely consist of old men playing the fiddle.

chap, Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

oh you poor deluded fool...that's the highlights.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

OTM!

I like TG4's documentaries. I've enjoyed the series where people learn to play the traditional instruments (I think it's called the youth team or something)...

The Panel was good but badly needs Dara O'B back to bring them all under controls and bring the funny. Maxwell is woejus. It also wastes female panellists though one or two I would dearly love to never see on tv again, especially the blonde one who keeps going on about her baby.

Primetime investigates = absolute gold. National treasure as far as I'm concerned.

hyggeligt, Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

there's a man that's been quiet!

reelin in the years, hands would be my favourite 'programmes' (got RITY 80's boxset, can't believe that you can't get the rest, or 'hands' either), but i'd find it hard to criticise rte on sport, news, etc which is relaly where the national broadcaster should be focusing, i think.

used to have a great record o fgetting in the hot new shows form the US before uk too, i'm not sure if this is still the case though? don't watch as much tv as i once did, and the sky + has me spoilt tbh.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

Hands is one of the best programmes made by any station anywhere (hands down, ho!) a really elegant piece, its a sacred cow in art colleges though not just because of how everything you learn is gold dust here (it is) but because it is so perfectly crafted. Reelin' in the Years is great and was proof of my sister's belief that the department who put together the montage sequences for movie ads are the most talented in RTE and basically that's what that programme was.

Take You Down (I know, right?), Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

this is all a bit positive though. so-

fair city. pat kenny.

uh, i don't actually watch enough telly to know any more than that, and i'd be predisposed to dislike these shows, no matter how well they were done anyway.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

the guy who made hands lives about a mile from my gf's 'home' home.

apparently it's a good bet to be a dvd boxset in time for next christmas, but they'll judge it in terms of requests to the archives.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

Why are all the kids on J-1 summer so boring?

Take You Down (I know, right?), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

because they're rich and irish.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

no offense, eastern shannoners.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

have just signed a contract 'darraghmac' :(

Haaaaaa....

Am I meant to be the eastern shannoner? I am confused!

J-1 is boring. Fine, you slept 5 to a room, you drank loads, someone might have snogged you now plz stfu kthxbai. I spent my summers in Italy. Much better for the soul mah dears.

hyggeligt, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

I spent my summers in Italy

if you've never come across the species, this is classic eastern shannoner talk

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

Ha ha ha! I think I know the type you mean. They sound very similar to a bunch we have here...

hyggeligt, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

oh how adorable, you thought i was excluding you!

there's isn't enough pat kenny hate on this thread, but i didn't miss the repping for housewives/workshy favourite joe duffy. explain youself.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

I thought you were! Figured I feel under the "jackeen from Dublin" bracket rather than Eastern Shannoner.

Joe: good listener to people whinging. Late Show: People whinging (or so far as I can tell). Combine: BLAM! Magic time...

hyggeligt, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

no, no- people whinge about the late late show on the joe duffy show.

late late crowd has always been too smug to whinge.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

That essential dichotomy is a reason why I left :(

Maxwell's Fullmooners is a lot of fun in its place - a comedy gig that starts at midnight, when everyone involved is already ripped to the tits. I have no idea what purpose televising it would be.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

See darraghmac, I probably should have paid more attention on my days off!

There is no purpose. For some reason RTE think he is popular. I don't know of anyone who likes his stuff. His crapness is in fact the only reason that little man from Offally (?) gets invited back on the panel every week, compared to Maxwell he is funny.

hyggeligt, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

whassisname, neil delamare or something? he has his moments, definitely.

more aobheainn o sullebhain though, she's lovely so she is.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

Which one is she? The boring brunette or the boring blonde?

He has moments, just not enough to justify his existence on my tv!

hyggeligt, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

I like his stuff! Here's his stuff, what don't you like?

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

(Maxwell now: Delamere is well loved by my prison officer brother-in-law, but - well, let's leave it there)

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry Andrew, I just find him unfunny and very irritating to be honest.

hyggeligt, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

sorry andrew, but i gotta concur here- maxwell never says anything funny, but even if he did his sneering teenage back-of-the-class delivery would negate it immediately in any case.

he's basically the irish rik mayall, but without the highlights.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

and neil delamare seems nice. he'd have tea with your granny and everything.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)
