Where to get the Mike Leigh Naked & Life is Sweet vibe?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 12 January 2003 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

From watching some Mike Leigh films? They're all good (if you can tolerate Gilbert & Sullivan for Topsy Turvy, anyway). Is it possible to see Abigail's Party in the US, somehow.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 12 January 2003 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

"Topsy Turvy" is my favourite Mike Leigh film, which seems kind of silly of me.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 12 January 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

It's mine too, Andrew, so clearly it isn't silly. ;-)

I know he's made films that most people would consider far more worthy of critical acclaim, but the Mike Leigh film I can watch again and again is "Nuts in May".

I've seen Abigail's Party! I've seen all the ML films I think...

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 12 January 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't stand the little I've seen of his films actually. bring on the hollywood trash sez I!

Mary if you're talking about cultural tourism then I do think you can just go to an area of London and and get it there. It's a film, not a webcam.

Sorry, that sounded really wanky but I am confused.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 13 January 2003 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

No, that's fine, what you said made me laugh! Yes, I'm talking about cultural tourism. The ever elusive gritty London of my dreams. Does it exist?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 13 January 2003 02:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean't to say 'don't think' - sorry.

If you want grey, residential, non-posh London, just hang around Zones 2-3 outside maybe W and NW postcodes. Nunhead or somewhere. Or for a bit more life, try the Kingsland Road, Dalston, as suggested by Kate on the other thread. But really, you could go most places.

Oh, I misunderstood the question. I don't know London well enough to say where you could get the "vibe", but there's a fair few Johnny from Nakeds lurking here in Manchester. Whether or not you'd actually want to meet them is another matter entirely.

seven months pass...
According to this weeks Time Out both Mike Leigh's Naked and Stephen Frears' Dirty Pretty Things center around Ridley Rd. Market in Dalston. I shall investigate tomorrow.

My dream is to get a postcard postmarked "Daaaaaaalston."

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 11 September 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

what do people think of Career Girls?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I think women should be allowed to have a career, as long as they collectively have my dinner on the table when I come home.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're investigating at around 3.30 pm tomorrow you may bump into me as I'll be picking up my son from school in Colvestone Crescent, just off Ridley Road Mkt.

David (David), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is worth the revival, just for the Leigh tip.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My dream is to get a postcard postmarked "Daaaaaaalston."

I'm afraid it will remain a dream. Unfortunately mail in the UK is no longer postmarked with a precise location of posting. If sent from Dalston it would be postmarked 'London E1-E18' (or something like that). BTW the post office in Kingsland High Street is one of the most miserable I've been in - mile long queues and unhelpful foot-dragging staff.

David (David), Thursday, 11 September 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I felt the vibe in Hackney and Dalston but sort of killed it when we went to the upscale Faulkners fish&chips. Felicity, I sent it from a post box in Dalston, I wanted to ask the p.o. worker to specially insign it for you, but hesitated.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 13 September 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Faulkners has been upscale for generations though, it's aspirational.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 13 September 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve, don't you mean Calender Girls?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 13 September 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Topsy-Turvy
2. Career Girls
3. all the other Leigh films...
