"The system cannot read from the specified device"

I have some documents which were created about five years ago using Word 6 (I think) and saved on floppy disks. I really really need to access these now, but my new computer won't open them and keep coming up with the error message "The system cannot read from the specified device".

What is occurring? Does anyone have any bright ideas how I can remedy this easily (bearing in mind I have zero technical understanding of computers). I am using the latest version of Microsoft Office with whatever version of Word that is, so you'd think it would be compatible. Harumph.
