I say 'In the Ghetto'.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 18 January 2003 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

"Can't Help Falling in Love"

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 18 January 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm torn between In The Ghetto and the live Suspicious Minds where they seem to forget how they end it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 18 January 2003 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I 2nd In The Ghetto.

toraneko (toraneko), Saturday, 18 January 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know many...er blue suede shoes?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 18 January 2003 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't this importing the OPO/POO question type to ILE? I never cared for that particular type.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 18 January 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Oliver's Army.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 18 January 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Constant Craving.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 18 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

suspicious minds
(i don't know very many elvis songs though,i have to say...)

robin (robin), Saturday, 18 January 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

burnin' love, it's the greatest song ever.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 18 January 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Suspicious Minds for me.

Celeste (Celeste), Saturday, 18 January 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Either Suspicious Minds or his meledy of Dixieland/Battle Hymn of the Republic

Curtis Stephens, Saturday, 18 January 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame"/"Little Sister"

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 18 January 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Suspicious Minds clearly the best. (although ghetto runs a close second)

That Girl (thatgirl), Saturday, 18 January 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

"Suspicious Minds" is grebt, but "Mystery Train" is even better.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 18 January 2003 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not a particular fan of Elvis but I think 'The Edge of Reality' from 1969 is a brilliant song. I think it might have been the B side of 'If I Can Dream' (also among his better efforts) everywhere else, but the A side in Australia.

Fred Nerk, Saturday, 18 January 2003 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

blue moon

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 19 January 2003 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

"If I Can Dream". I'd say "Heartbreak Hotel" is I wasn't so sick of it.

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 19 January 2003 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

me and Mr Ailsa had "the wonder of you" at our first dance at our wedding. v. tacky, but nice sentiment.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 19 January 2003 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"Suspicious Minds" for sure. Though "Mystery Train," "It's Now or Never," "Burnin' Love" and "Can't Help Falling in Love" would round out my top five.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 19 January 2003 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

"Burnin' Love" always sounded a bit of a mess to me. Like the producers turned on the afterburners too soon (not to mention Elvis).

My personal favorite is "Blue Moon" from the Sun Years (especially his wordless croon toward the end), but to go with the consenus I'll say "Suspicious Minds," and in close competition "Mystery Train," "Can't Help Falling in Love," and "Hurt."

In *ahem* researching this question, I've rediscovered just how sexy Elvis was.

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 19 January 2003 03:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Hound Dog

Michael B, Sunday, 19 January 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Good Rockin' Tonight, Elvis's second single and a strangely forgotten classic. Opens with one of the best "WELLLLLLLLLLLLL"s in history.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 19 January 2003 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

his gospel songs are genius too especially 'farther along'.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 19 January 2003 06:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i like "trying to get to you" and "baby, let's play house" for the older stuff. and "i'll hold you in my heart (til I can hold you in my arms)" and "loved on look" are hot too.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

'Long Black Limousine' may be my favourite.

But the thread title implies we need to reach a consensus, so I won't disagree with 'Suspicious Minds'.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Blue Moon - it literally sounds as though he had just landed from outer space, a Martian trying to decode pop song English and realising that emotions are more important than phonetics (cf. Bowie's Subterraneans, Hannett's production on JD's Closer; cf. also Camus' L'Etranger).

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

MY TOP 5: 1. Edge of Reality 2. I Just Can't Help Believin' 3. Suspicious Minds 4. Burning Love 5. If I Can Dream

Can anybody tell me anything about his earlier (around 1973 I think) version of Willie Nelson's wonderful 'Always On My Mind'? Does it work?

Fred Nerk, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Marcello wins some kind of award for tying Elvis's recording of "Blue Moon" to Camus's The Stranger.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

'Viva Las Vegas' ties it all together.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

"Make the World Go Away" this is the song I've always imagined EP humming to himself as he reached back to take that finally wipe.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

American Trilogy of course. What VFM on a jukebox.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

actually there's one thing abt which i agree w greil m - american trilogy by elvis does not work because of the showbiz. even in '72 he could not "be" america. the mickey newbury orig is much more powerful because he doesn't go for the easy big finish option - he ends the song very quietly on "all my trials" - and there's the point of the song. but elvis can't resist the shuck-and-jive of the big yea-saying, republican party convention finale. nor can he resist his own confusion.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I notice no one has mentioned 'Yoga Is As Yoga Does'.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Wonder of You". Definitely my favourite.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

You were always on my mind

isadora (isadora), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

'crying in the chapel'
