That is, if you keep emails from long times ago for various reasons of nostalgia or otherwise...

In my primary account, mine is a message from The Channel Six dated December 2000, talking about a gig that our bands were going to play together. Ollie later told me it was the first email he'd ever written, so I thought I should save it. It also contained both his and Dan's phone numbers (For phones neither of them have any more) which was clearly v. important to me at the time.

What's the oldest email you've saved and why did you save it?

Am I the only weirdo around here that keeps old emails?

Why do my new threads always languish?

kate, Sunday, 19 January 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

The first one in my outlook is from mark s! (from last April)...I've never deleted any of my messages in outlook, as I've only had this computer 8 months.

Just checked my hotmail, and it's July 11th 1997 from my mum, as I probably asked her write me to see if my email address worked!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 19 January 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

The first two messages in my hotmail inbox are dated 21st May 2098, and 15th May 2098.

Oh dear. Mine's from 1994, from somebody offering to make me a tape of a Sebadoh show.

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 19 January 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha... Douglas, that's not from me, is it?

I have a few different email accounts, hence different inboxes, so I'll just go with the oldest (in a folder named simply "inbox-old"):

A message from an old boss dated Jan 25, 1995, asking me when I was going to set up a Pop Culture forum on the ISP/online service we worked for.

Jen (nstop), Sunday, 19 January 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

It's from Dec. 2, 2000, from a girl in Texas (the one whose misspelling is my e-mail address). Just a "hello how's life" type e-mail.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 19 January 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope, Jen, not you, I'm afraid--it's Christine Sievanen. I just googled her, and she seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. Ditto, actually, for the next person in my inbox, Halle Winkler...

Before I switched everything over to IMAP-based email accounts I archived stuff into FileMaker. Earliest email in there is from January 1994 from Chelsea Starr asking me when I'm going to come up to BOMP to pick up a Spacemen 3 poster...

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Monday, 20 January 2003 04:39 (twenty-three years ago)

My machines always tend to die and take the emails with them so I never get a chance to get attached (ho ho) to my emails. The earliest email on my current machine is from a friend of mine suggesting two rules for making a compilation for girl I had a crush on:

Rule 1: no Ornette Colman
Rule 2: avoid songs like 'Every Breath You Take' which might imply scary stalking style situations.

Alfie (Alfie), Monday, 20 January 2003 09:33 (twenty-three years ago)

March 2000 a guy saying "Sorry to see you go" when I was leaving a job.

toraneko (toraneko), Monday, 20 January 2003 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine is from August 1999, entitled "Niihao from Shanghai!". My best friend from university was travelling back from Japan landwards, and was asking if I wanted anything from Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal, Tibet, Jordan or Israel. I got a tiny kite and a pornographic comic book, and so did all my friends.
