I met him once, late 1992, backstage at a Pigface show. A raspy individual, weirdly compelling, but easy enough to talk to. He didn't bug me, I love Throbbing Gristle, I enjoy a fair slew of Psychic TV, and he has a sense of humor. I'll say classic.

Too industrial for I Love Music? I Love Anti-Music, perhaps? I give him props for spearheading the industrial movement, but talent wise, I point to Gristle bandmate Sleazy Christopherson.

Well jeez, if we're talking Sleazy and Coil, it's a whole other ball game. A man crazy enough to do a cover of "Tainted Love" a few years after Soft Cell's own cover, not to mention getting Marc Almond to appear in the video in a total fuck-you cameo, and can still years later do Hanson and Van Halen videos. Astounding. Points for credit as well for calling the recent series of Coil reissues something like "Stevo, Give Us Our Money!" in reference to Mr. Some Bizzare himself.

i was mystified when i finally heard two throbbing gristle albums and didn't get into them even one little bit. they seemed so . . . weak and thin and sonically simplistic and, well, nothing at all. psychic tv had at least one good single with "unclean" though. neubauten any day, though i haven't really been in the mood for that much recently either.

A brilliant reference to Coil's Scatalogy, no doubt. I prefer Horse Rotarvator myself. I love that "Tainted Love" cover as well. Putting it into the context of AIDS made it quite disturbing.

Is it Psychic TV? They played here about a month ago & I didn't see it but have friends who said they were glad they went. That's as much as I can say. They did a Nilsson cover apparently.

seven months pass...

Wondering about this in the wake of reading about him from Cosey Fanni tutti's perspective in Art Sex Music. He doesn't seem like a very nice person.
So I'm wondering what the attraction to him is.

Sounds from that book as though he had the least creative input into TG and definitely the reunion. & wanted to take most of the acclaim.
Looks like he was personally poison to Cosey.
But that's one persdon's opinion. Contextualised by her it does sound coherent though and he doesn't.

I read it too and it's a hatchet job, for sure. His charisma doesn't seem to be in any doubt though. I don't agree at all about him having the least creative input into TG, but certainly he seemed to be only along for the ride when they reunited.

I went in on P-Orridge pretty hard when Throbbing Gristle's catalog was reissued six years ago. But like I say in that review, in the context of 1978 England he probably seemed super-shocking and pathbreaking.

Saw Psychic TV once, opening for Pigface. They were in their bad-hippie-techno-plus-tribal-bullshit phase; Bachir Attar of the Master Musicians of Jajouka joined them onstage, tootling on a very high-pitched and annoying reed instrument while the rest of them oozed out boring dance sludge.
