So, umm, anyone wanna comment on Belinda Carlisle's new Playboy pics? (Google finds 'em here!) They're retouched above & beyond call of duty which is normal [& expected] for Playboy, that "painted" look making 'em "art" where I woulda preferred, y'know, porn.

In the old days, when the pin-up was not Belinda C. but Leonid Brezhnev rowr, this aproach was called Socialist Realism, no?

mark s, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doesn't look much like realism to me. Oh well.

Ally C, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

too 'arty' for me

dave q, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nice tits, she does look a bit like a showroom dummy - too much make up!

DJ Martian, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She's still quite pretty I guess...anyone know why she decided to pose for them?

jel, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmmm Leonid Brehznev nude in Playboy, now that's an image which is going to stay with me.

As for Belinda why did she do it, it's not as if she needs the money is it? Plus I'm too much of a new man to be interested in that kind of thing........still, nice tits.

Billy Dods, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nice to see that they left some bush. I hate it when they shave them all the time in porn mags, who could possibly be into that except Gary Glitter?

dave q, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

how come she's standing in a bunch of mortal kombat backgrounds?

ethan, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, come on! Those aren't her tits! I don't even think that is the same body as the one in the "Our Lips are Sealed" video. She used to be so cute and round.

Mr. Kittens, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I look at these pics, and all I can think of are those comments made in this month's Spin about her lack of feminine hygeine. Ick.

David Raposa, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't they figure out quite a few years ago that women were uncomfortable working/hanging out in places which prominently featured pornography? Do you want girls to feel comfortable about posting here? Or is this 'ironic' and therefore not the same as the porn on the office or workshop walls?

maryann, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought all pornography was ironic these days?

Graham, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's well-known that this was the worst celebrity Playboy shoot ever.

What's your problem with shaved, Dave Q? I think it's great.

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is placing a link to something "prominently featuring" it, though? I'd say not: the problem with the workplace stuff is that you have no choice but to look at it, surely? Not trying to belittle your anti- porn concerns which nobody (me included) ever properly replies to.

Look. * wading in with both feet , not noticing the danger signs* I am sick of Dworkin Types claiming porn demeans women. People fuck . Its like people breathing and people shitting . A represenation of that act should not be destroyed. Why does porn demean woman. Why does representing a females body demeaning. Does Gay Porn demean Men. Its not rape, at worst it could be whoring. I know the industry is awful but that is an aftereffect of capitalism selling everything to the highest bidder.

anthony, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

About work. The word playboy was mentioned. Now i buy it for their fiction but in this context it seemed to be a picture spread. As well Belinda has said she did it to show that 50 is erotic. Now i dont see it but if that was her goal , is that not giving woman who are denied their eroticism back ?

anthony, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New thread time I think...

DG, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why do women need the Male Gaze of total strangers to get their eroticism back? That's what makes me uncomfortable about that whole tack. (I'm pro-porn, BTW, before anyone calls me a feminazi)

Kate the Saint, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They do not nessicarily. But eroticism is based on performance.

anthony, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dworkin is right. Most straight men know this, and deep down, don't really care, if they were really honest with themselves. Dworkin's only sin is blowing the whistle on our little game.

dave q, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm kind of theoretically undecided about porn (base physical response pretty much overwhelms high-minded theoretical notions in everyday terms though) but classifying 'antis' as "Dworkin Types" or "feminazis" is surely dud. And Anthony would you consider that delightful top-shelf publication "Over 40" to be reclaiming denied eroticism, or is it just that Playboy is 'classy'?

Tom, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Excuse me, I have just been through 2 weeks of feminazi HELL. I have every right to call people feminazis.

Kate the Saint, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gay men usually view porn as a tool . I really do not identify/understand het dynamics

anthony, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well I'd argue that it's dumb to anyway Kate cuz it's adopting the vocab of the Right (assuming here you are against that shadowy force, of course) BUT yeah sure but the word implies an extremist position and being anti-porn is not an extremist position, surely.

What do you think of that there Strokes LP sleeve though? Heh heh.

Tom, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I usually regard pro-porn guys as tools.
