Andrew lloyd Webber best or vomitous gargle?

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a such thing as "Andrew Lloyd Webber's best"?

Ally, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes there is - it's called 'Joesph and the Technicoloured Dreamcoat'. I have never seen 'The Phanom of the Opera' but I don't think it has any robots or dinosaurs in it.

NIck, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's all relative, innit? I mean, it could be his best... but compared to let's say... uh... Cats?

nathalie, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And what good would it be had it those things since it is a musical not a film. Does it have urchins?

ALW's best = fantastically vulgar 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. ALW's best song = "Don't Cry For Me Argentina". Even so.

Tom, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does it have urchins getting killed? Les Mis at least has that.

I will forever have a spot for Evita in my heart due to my parents owning a copy of the New York cast album. Mandy Patinkin, baby.

JOSEPH AND THE TECHNICOLOR FUCKING DREAMCOAT IS THE WORST MUSICAL I EVER SAW. IT MADE ME WANT TO COMMIT SUICIDE LIVE ON STAGE. I WANT TO TAKE HIS MAGIC COLORED COAT AND GIVE IT TO HIM, ALRIGHT. GIVE IT TO HIM AND SHOVE IT STRAIGHT DOWN JOSEPH'S BLOODY MULTICOLORED THROAT.

Sorry.

Ally, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ALW's biggest crime is not the musicals themselves - if you don't want to see 'em, don't go - but the way that he locked up so many venues with identikit productions, stealing variety and innovation from the West End.

Not that I could promise you that there was much there before - JC Superstar was probably pretty new wave for its time. And it was Cameron Mackintosh who entrenched the 'high production values, mid- culture' aspect the most. In fact, it was the punters who wanted more of the same who got what they deserved. Who's to say they didn't have a terrific time on their night out in / day trip to London? It was fun! Fun, you remember that!

Elitist bastards. The lot of us.

He's Not, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Never mind all that, the colaberation with Ben Elton on a football related musical has to be the nadir of all art/entertainment.
ALW. Ben Elton. Football. I ask you.

DavidM, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally you wouidlnt know a good musical if it bit your arse. Drunkard.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with Ally. I had to sing through most of that fucking disgrace at least twice this year for various concerts and it stinks like a big stinky thing that is already very stinky. Have I made myself clear??????

Bill, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whether or not I am familiar with good musicals is worth nothing, it doesn't change the fact that ALW is evil and awful and sucks goat balls.

Ally, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

whats that? you want to suck goat's balls? hoho ho! Thats rich! Wait til I tell nick!

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, Ally speaks the goddamn truth. Scientific truth, at that.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is a pox on the ass of Broadway. A pretentious, grandiose twit that hooks up with ass lyricists to bang out turd after turd. He was responsible for _Cats_, wasn't he? All shit, all the time. He's like Jim Steinman without Meatloaf.

And he's PAID to make more of these damn things. There's no justice in the world. Mik e, I've lost all respect for you.

Best scene ever (tho' alas, i did not witness this) was when the touring truck of 'Cats' overturned and blocked traffic going into Canada for 4 hours. Guess cat crap was strewn all over i5.

Nice to know I'm not alone in my love for Mandy Patinkin. :)
