My lips are chapped, but the worst bit is in the corner of my mouth. I keep putting chap stick on it but then I yawn or something and break it open again. Ouch!

When I searched to see if there was already a thread on lips, I got threads on Solipsism. Oh, silly ILXors.

I have a bit on my upper lip just now. it was worse at the weekend. I kept licking it even though I knew not to. it got all sore and tight and would crack when I would laugh/talk much. I have some vaseline lip therapy petroleum jelly stuff I'm putting on it.

chapping at the corners of your mouth can be caused by a B12 deficiency: eat meat. Also can be some kind of infection: make out with healthy people and steal their power.

I would trust my judgment on martinis far more than my judgment on chapped lips but bonjella is great for all kind of mouth complaints (cysts ulcers and the like), it tastes kind of aniseedy and is made by ICI.

My lips are quite often chapped, esp. the lower one, but as to whether anyone notices and goes "ew! look at that, it's gross!" or not I really have no idea. I own some lipsyl but rarely use it, even in cold weather. The makers of Lipsyl, Bonjela and other similar products haven't really caitalised on the whole social ostracism thing as much as, say Head 'n' Shoulders and Clearasyl, but I see no reason why they shouldn't have done so...the fact that one particular product's advertisers haven't made pariahs of ppl with some trivial physical condition is something we should celebrate, I suppose.

Blistex! You have to get blistex(used to be blistese). I've tried everything, I have eczema and extremely sensitive so sometimes I suffer from hideously chapped lips. The only thing that works is original blistex, all those other chap sticks, lypsyls and stuff just make me worse.

WHAT ABOUT CARMEX? I too have chronically chapped lips, everytime they are trying to heal eating or showering takes the ugly scabby layers off. Its so wearisome. It has been like this for years though! Ma be related to how I often have a cold and breathe out of my mouth, partially - breath does much harm. I just want them to heal. I just need all the layers to come and stay, and not peel away, for this I pray, for this I pray. I do not want swollen slabs of flesh surrounding my mouth anymore (okay, its not really that bad). I want regular external-mouth-skin.

I WANT LIPS. FOR MY BIRTHDAY.

Grrr... My lip is still looking weird and it's been over a week. In the morning it will feel fine until I brush my teeth and then it cracks again. Ouchy!!! Now I'm trying to take lyzeme (sp?) tablets.

Try tea tree oil...it's antiseptic and will seal out bad stuff while the oil softens up the dry bits. Drink lots of water too.

This is true, but to confirm, see if your tongue has a very pronounced line down the middle. If you do, then it's B12. But you don't need to eat meat...milk and eggs have B12, and most cereals are enriched with it. Or take a vitamin.

The best lip stuff ever is Burt's Beeswax Lip Balm. It's not addictive the way chapstick and carmex are; it just works. Petroleum-based products on lips are yucky.

This is a bit complex, but it is good stuff. My grandma makes it in vast quantities and distributes it. You need loads of marigold petals, dry them in the oven and grind them to powder. Get a saucepan you don't really care about ruining, heat up a load of vaseline until it's liquid, mix in powdered marigold petals. Pour into pots, leave to set.

It's brilliant. Chapped lips, dry skin, bags under eyes, small cuts and grazes, stubble rash, spots (I also questioned the wisdom of putting something vaseline based on spots, but it does get rid of them). Honestly, it really works, although it is a pain to make, even though I don't.

Carmex, medicated Chapstick and Blistex are horrible for your lips. They have an ingrediant that dries out your lips after the initial moisture, thus the seeming addiction. That tingling is actually layers on your lips being vaporized. I found this out after I was overcome by months of chapped lips and never ending applications of carmex and Blistex trying to return my lips to normal. The best thing is drinking lots of water and applying straight vitamin e.

Trust me nothing is worse for your lips than those brands of lip balms- and maybe giving lots of blow jobs... but we can't have everything can we.

i use Jane lipstick with menthol and SPF15 everyday as a base for my real color lipstick. I never have a problem as long as I do this.

I also apply vaseline directly to lips at least once a day. Supple, kissable, yum.

p.s. anna's solution sounds lovely. an old family friend would do the same thing with comfrey. it was a fantastic salve.

I am loving Pupa lipgloss at the moment - it comes with a brush, not a sponge! - and also some Tinkerbell lipbalm I found in a drawer that I bought about 10 years ago from Toys R Us. it still tastes of cherries, so I reckon it must be OK.

I met my friend Traceyanne in the street the other day and she took out a chapstick do do her lips. BUT IT WASN'T A CHAPSTICK AT ALL IT WAS A BATTERY. How I laughed, for the briefest of moments.

No Vaseline is not good. I don't know why they make 'lip therapy' tins because the stuff provides no moisture at all and they'll feel even worse after 5 mins. I love Carmex, feels a little bit tingly when you put it on.
