Hello all you little monsters. Honestly, I leave you alone for one day and this is what happens. Dear oh dear. Anyway, I didn't delete the thread until just now (00:40, Friday August 31st) because I've been out all day buying postal orders, opening bank accounts, and going to karaoke, that sort of thing. So apologies to all those with hurt feelings for not acting sooner, I realise now the value of a second moderator, so Tom will be re-instated as Moderator #2. To be honest though, I am a bit disappointed in the conduct of some of you, a lot of that was a bit(!) nasty and uncalled for. Yes, perhaps it was a bit silly of Kate to start it, but we all do silly things from time to time, don't we?
Hero of the day: DJ Martian for his valiant but ultimately futile attempts to stop the venomous juggernaut of a thread.
Villain of the day: Peter Baran, LC does not smell of poo. I'll tell her you said that and she WILL kick you hard in the shins, you naughty boy.

Oh, and 'Reclusive Hero' - *I* know who you are.

[just to nudge it into place boss]

mark s, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thank you, cowering servant type.

DG, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Igor to your Dr. Frankenstein of this shambling Monster. (As played by Marty Feldman, of course.)

jess, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But of course. I echo the above on endlessly.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i would like to take this opportunity to apologise to kate and paul for my part in that thread last night. i would have apologised then but i got shunted out of the computer lab. sorry guys. i didn't mean to upset anyone, just wasn't thinking is all.

lady die, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess a kind of why-it-was-deleted clarification should be made. As I understand it - correct me if I'm wrong Mr DG Sir - stuff (apart from illegal images, slander etc.) can be deleted if and only if i) the poster responsible wants it deleted and ii) there is a good reason. Here the poster made it pretty clear she wanted her thread deleted and the good reason was that somebody else was upset with it. Nothing to do with the specific individuals posting.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Tom, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I'm the villain am I. Of course the divine LC doesn't smell of poo, but it was just a ploy to get you to notice and delete. In which case it would make me a hero.

Not - Greg trying to get me into trouble - a reclusive one of any sort.

Pete, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm sorry, Pete. I thought it was obvious I chose you because it wasn't your writing style at all. Who is it though?

Maybe we can have some sort of a game to uncover who could be so reclusive? And a prize for the winner? Right, I'm going to think up a prize. Kicking Pete in the shins? Sounds fair to me.

Greg, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I'm right on what I'm thinking, the person who did it anonymously had a damn good reason to do so and should be left as such - sometimes there are good reasons to keep to yourself but not keep to yourself at the same time.

Ally, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anonymity's always a difficult one but I'm against it here I think. If you're whistle-blowing on a company, yes, but if you're offering opinions - which is all ILE really is - you should keep one given name/e-mail. It's ironic RH's point was that if you post you should accept the consequences, when s/he was plainly unwilling to do this. Even if the thread hadn't been deleted, I'd have suggested that post be.

This is all abstract - I have no idea who RH is currently and I'm not interested in the situation.

Tom, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, in theory I totally agree with you - I mean, I clearly don't post anonymously or even under an always-used psuedonym. But sometimes personal situations will prerequire a person to either not say anything or say it in a sneaky way - if they aren't posting as someone else I don't get it.

Note that the person I believe it was isn't a regular contributor to the board, and since that's my belief I fail to see the difference between 'Reluctant Hero' and, just as example, 'Tracer Hand'. Might be different if I found out it was a regular poster not willing to put their balls on the line and risk losing a "friend".

Ally, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What was it I said yesterday, for 95 percent of us this whole affair is none of our fucking business, lets end it now.

Ronan, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ronan, you're right. As I said I was being abstract cuz it's an interesting question but I should have posted it as a separate thread.

Tom, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay, let me stop you there. I don't think my post was particularly offensive - most people I spoke to seemed to think it was pretty fair. Of course, you can't tell now, because the thread's been deleted. I'm not too bothered to be honest, in a way I'm glad for Paul's sake it got taken down. But there were some important points being made, I thought.

Things like:

"Oh, and 'Reclusive Hero' - *I* know who you are. -- DG ([email protected])"

make me laugh though. It sounds so sinister! Did you check everyone's addresses, or just mine?

Ultimately, the only reason people are interested in this is beacuse they thought it might have been someone far more interesting than me, so we might as well knock it on the head.

The point about only using one email address is another matter. Anyone heard much from Colin Clarke lately? Me neither.

I'm off to buy one of those "I'm a Nice Guy" T-shirts Gillespie is always wearing.

Andrew Williams, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooer - NOT who I thought. Interesting.

Anyhow, I am dealing with it as an abstract question myself - it's no longer about that thread, cos who cares? I just like theoretical discussion.

Ally, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe we can have...
And a prize...
Right, I'm going...
Kicking Pete...

Sounds fair...

Oops, looks like all the evidence was a bit misleading.

Greg, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

not worth even att-t-t-t-empting to disguize my unique and resonant STYLE hurrah chiz hmmm

mark "anonymu" s, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I only wrote that in an attempt to flush you out, hoping you would admit who you were to make my macho posturing look silly.

DG, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come on people. I don't hear silence. God I've excelled myself with that one

Ronan, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Silence?

Greg, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well Ally I fail to see the difference between you and, oooh, something insultingly anonymous.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh alright. It was me. I was just pissed off that Greg smoked me out so quick.

Pete, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fuck off trying to be interesting, Pete. I did it. Did all my questioning about it not arouse any suspicions?

Greg, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
