Ray Liotta plays Shoeless Joe like a wisecracking gangster, DB Sweeney like a sweet hick. I know which one is more true to life but who cares about reality?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

What the fuck are you on about? (uh, ;-))

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Hot dudes, obviously.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Ray Liotta, all the way - every way *panting and drooling*

Except, well, I think I saw some preview for a new movies of his, recently, and it appears that he is starting to get that Brando-esque spread thing. Not that I don't still swoon over his eyes, though.

Ray Liotta reminds me of a dude I work with. What the hell did he do to himself? I don't mean physically but how does someone go from Field of Dreams/Goodfellas to just disappearing? He was like the biggest B movie guy for years - HOW did that happen?

The problem with his Shoeless Joe is that he basically played him as a quieter Henry Hill. Which was nothing like Shoeless Joe. HOWEVER who cares because it wasn't supposed to be a true story.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

who the fuck is Shoeless Joe?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

he does the voice of tommy vercetti (sic) for gta: Vice City. it would've been better if instead of Joe Jackson he'd been playing Hal Chase in Field of Dreams cuz then it would've been more believable.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

although I guess Hal Chase isn't as sympathetic as Shoeless Joe even though Shoeless Joe was guilty as hell.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know - he really did seem to drop off the radar (or is that "below the radar"?) for a while. I can't say much about his acting skills, but he's perfectly fine as eye candy, so far as I am concerned.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

not alotta range - even henry hill's just a extrapolation on his role in something wild.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't worry -- he put the weight on for the role :) He might have taken it back off already.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

So Ray Liotta and DB Sweeney hav acted in two separate biopics on da life of someone who contributed his voice to gta?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

that's it!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you, Tep. My fantasy life has suddenly revived thanks to your information. Be proud and stand tall.

Shoeless Joe was guilty but pitiable because he kind of was hoodwinked into it. He just wasn't the brightest bulb in the lot. The whole team was guilty, whether or not certain players wanted to 'fess up to their culpability. Looking the other way /= not guilty.

Ray Liotta basically plays himself, I think. Actually, Goodfellas is basically the defining movie of actors that just play variations on the same role all the time. Even DeNiro. They should've found a place for Al Pacino and it'd be complete.

(note all four are actors I like!)

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i always assumed that DB Sweeney was closer to what Shoeless Joe Jackson was really like. i.e., a naive country-kid. no way that Ray Liotta is believable as some kid from the South, unless it's South Brooklyn or South Philly.

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i just let that pass by, but Pacino in goodfellas would have made that movie the best movie EVAH!

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Ladies, doesn't Ray Liotta play a belligerent pyscho just a little too easily for comfort? Something Wild, Unlawful Entry, Turbulence, Cop Land, Goodfellas, Operation Dumbo Drop! C'mon! He was sweet in Corinna Corinna and Blow though (nice change of pace to have Liotta not play a wackjob in a film about Cocaine). Not to mention he's pretty icky in Hannibal too. If Liotta looked at you angrily and said "I'm gonna bite your fucking head off" you believe him! Me no wanna hang around that guy. Oh, and Ray Liotta's getting props for his new movie Narc. Cause he put on weight and grew a beard.

I vote for DB Sweeney! He's less smug than most jock-actors and he does not look like he'd smash my face into a desk screaming "YOU LIKE THAT? YOU LIKE THAT, YOU SONUVABITCH? ANSWER ME!"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 10 February 2003 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

db sweeney reminds me too much of stephen baldwin

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 10 February 2003 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

plus I always think of the dude with the plane and the parachute and db sweeney ain't half as cool as that guy

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 10 February 2003 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Tad, Goodfellas already is the best movie evah. Anything else is a bonus.

Anthony has now put images in my head of Liotta doing the above to Kevin Costner. I will sleep well tonight.

DB Sweeney is an underrated actor.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 10 February 2003 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

HANG ON! Ray Liotta has no excuse for his absolute non-effort at portraying Joe Jackson as non-NY. DB SWEENEY IS FROM SHOREHAM, LONG ISLAND. I just pulled him up on IMDB to prove my case for his underrating. However I realized his career kind of died off in the early 90s too.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 10 February 2003 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Shoeless Joe was the boy who was left to wear only his socklets.

Shouldn't there be a movie where Ray Liotta and Charlie Sheen play brothers?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 10 February 2003 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlie Sheen was great in Being John Malkovitch.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 10 February 2003 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

There shd b a movie where Ray Liotta and Fred Savage r father and son respectively, in fact they r, aren't they?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 10 February 2003 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

don't forget the Ma-Sheen's performance in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Impressively suave. Plus his cameo in National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon One is pretty sweet.

Charlie as valet: seven dollars
Samuel L. Jackson as cop: (hands a ten)
Charlie: got anything smaller?
Samuel: Keep it.
Charlie: got anything larger?
Samuel: (delivers patented glare)

maybe you just had to be there.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 10 February 2003 04:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my god, I forgot about his part in Ferris Bueller. That's possibly the greatest cameo of all time.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 10 February 2003 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

"You know him?"

I vote for Sweeney, but I think the film itself is just pretty damn great.
