Big Noses - Funny or Not?

A look at the weekend at some Euro-comix convinced Pete and I of an apparent rule of humour. If a character has a big nose, what happens to him (it is usually him) is funnier. Is this true?

I look forward to the hilarious antics of Nicole Kidman in The Hours.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Who saw it? (the Hours) Was it decent?

Are you serious?

If I read the question correctly, you are asking whether comics characters with exaggerated noses are usually the subjects of broader humor. Probably yes, there may be an intended correlation on the part of the author for the exaggeration to add to the overall absurdityof the situation, but there are probably also a number of social, historical and cultural reasons for why the nose in particular is emphasized.

The question of "funny" depends on the audience. Perhaps in a more homogeneous audience it is easier to come to a consensus on what is funny. For example, do you find Chief Wahoo funny?

Characters with big noses can also be quite tragic, like Cyrano de Bergerac and Pinocchio. If the question is whether big noses are intrinsically funny, the answer is no. Except perhaps for rhinoplasty surgeons.

Where's a clip of Forrester and TV's Frank with their big noses when you need it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

my nose is quite big, you know what they say about dudes with big noses...

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

They have big hankies?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it true that your nose continues to grow until you die?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Chief Wahoo = Not Funny

No One (SiggyBaby), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope, not true. Same for fingernails and hair. They can appear to as the skin pulls away after death.

No One (SiggyBaby), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

How you answer this question will depend entirely on whether or not you find Barbara Streisand funny.

Aimless, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I think there's something wrong with me, 'cause (Streisand aside) I generally find large noses on ladies quite hot.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

no-one can mistake until for after.

men's ears continue to grow all their life, I think.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Urp, mea culpa.
