if any?

C J (C J), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

It's better to not be in a relationship than to be in one just for the sake of making it work. My last bf and I had lots of problems, but we dragged them out over 3 years. BLECH. Too much work for too little satisfaction.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't drink Bailey's.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Do not _ever_ go to bed mad. Stay up as long as it takes to work the problem out. Tiredness may actually be your best friend here.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i) don't go out with mentalists

ii) don't be a self-obsessed prick

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

by mentalists do you mean people who read minds on the vaudeville stage?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Have a sense of humor; identify the good things so you can treasure them (or realize that there aren't so many good things).

Also catalog your record collection in case it all goes south.
(When I decided my b-friend could shelve his records in with mine, I knew it was gonna be forever.)

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Long distances suck ass.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Never reveal your secrets. Ever.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

records I have lost to The Ladies:
Lou Reed - Magic & Loss (no big loss, really, the only I didn't replace)
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Orange
Beck - Midnite Vultures
Railroad Jerk - Bang The Drum EP
Modern Lovers - Precise Modern Lovers Order

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

You have a lot to be thankful for.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Also lost:

A fantastic "Amazing Spiderman" t-shirt (with Spidey danglin upside-down)
a leather jacket
one underground sprinkler
14 unmatched socks
one manual typewriter
95% self-respect

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Do not _ever_ go to bed mad

I read this as 'Do not _ever_ go bed mad' and I was like, b-but why not?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

It'd be to the detriment of other aspects of the relationship.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

don't go out to cargo
with the girlfriend and most of the
girlfriend's friends,
including one girl who's
after you who you really fancy back
and then get blind f*cking drunk.

it'll only end in tears one way or another.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing. I haven't learned a damned thing, I just keep repeating the same bloody mistakes over and over and now Hilton is throwing tantrums and I'm just standing here going "wow, a boy flipping out and throwing tantrums to manipulate me into what he wants, well, THIS is familiar, I must be in love."

kate, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

aye. tears. one way or another.

megan p, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Steady on, gurl!

Lesson One: Musicians will shag just about anyone who asks, and if they identify a female rival as 'mad' they are probably already shagging her.

Lesson Two: Don't go out with people who like to cultivate female rivals for their girlfriends.

Lesson Three: It's probably better if you're not into exactly the same things; that way nobody is 'copying'.

Lesson Four: Media swivelheads are a bad idea because most of them never got laid until they got a deal and then FUNNY how women gather 'round all of a sudden (this is how misogynists get made, so avoid!).

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

It's probably better if you're not into exactly the same things; that way nobody is 'copying'.

Ha-ha. My last bf said I copied him by learning how to play guitar. He said I stole his entire identity!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

"So, tell me about yourself."
"Well, I play guitar. And that's it."
(Silence)

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, no girl in the WORLD ever played a guitar before they met him. Sarah, why didn't you TELL me you dated Chris Murphy!?!?

kate, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't continue relationships with people who use the word "love" before one and a half months, at earliest.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

dammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm you kate!
I now have 6 hours until I can get that song out of my head.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

having recently decided to remain single for the rest of my days, i say the only lesson i learned is to STAY AWAY FROM THEM altogether. too much pain-potential and im sick of it.
( do i sound bitter ? )

donna (donna), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

never go with a woman who sells herself. it always ends BAD!

actually, that's just a line from Moulin Rouge, but it's probably true.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Both first- and secondhand lessons:

* Don't date anyone who can't handle being single.
* Don't get in a relationship because you can't handle being single.
* Don't start with a relationship in your mind and then go looking for the person who fits into it. Don't let anyone else fit you into their prefab scheme, either.
* Expect change.
* An argument is just an argument, not a sign that things aren't working. Resist the urge to make your life seem more dramatic.
* Ending a relationship is not the end of the world, and doesn't have to be the end of the friendship.
* Being friends is not a good enough reason to be more than that.
* Any petty, minor disagreements of the continuing type which seem like they can be put aside and will be worked out in time are potentially available as argument fodder when everything goes to shit. There's never any harm done by working these things out as they come up.
* Don't bottle anything up, and don't let your SO do so, either: by the same token, don't constantly act on emotional impulse. Strike a balance between lashing out and stewing.
* If you are bothered by something petty, your SO should still know about it: don't flatter yourself by thinking you can effectively pretend not to be bothered. Eventually, you'll know each other well enough that that won't work, and your SO will assume you're bothered by something else.
* Learn how to be angry without being a dick, instead of being a dick and pretending not to be angry.
* Never try to make an SO more like an ex. Don't react to an SO, positively or negatively, as if they were your ex. "I'm used to reacting to Y with Z because of my ex" is never a good reason for anything: that's your own shit that you should have dealt with before getting into another relationship.
* Don't get into a relationship because you like to fix people or want to be fixed. If you're depressed, don't start a relationship in order to feel happy. If you're bored, don't turn a potential SO into your new project.
* Good sex doesn't mean you have a good relationship, but bad sex will probably eventually ruin the relationship.
* Fair's got nothing to do with it and never did.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, Tep. You should write a book!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

hey donna, you do sound bitter but i don't think thats a bad thing, i know exactly how you feel. my life is more fulfilling when i concentrate on my friendships and my interests. so what if i'm lonely, i remember feeling desperately lonely when i had a partner too.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

A simple one: never forget to tell her how much you love her.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

*don't* engage in incredibly stitled physical relationships with people you're not sure you like at all and then spend an enormous amount of emotional energy avoiding them

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Do not date anyone who generally despises people of your gender but considers you okay. Under ANY circumstances.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Never put pudenda before your country.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Tep, smashing answer. Not a lot I could add to that, though I second the "if there's something that needs sorting out, sort it out".

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds like something from a gangster's handbook.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh god a million things, mostly to do with honesty and respect and if you like the other person and try to treat them well things can't get too bad, and it's almost impossible to show too much affection and love, and most of it is all the small things that seem too obvious or too subtle or too hard to put into words. Thing is, my marriage ended after 23 years anyway, so am I an expert with loads of experience or someone who fucked up even with all the advantages I had?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Never impose your own value system. Work at things. Stop and think once in a while. Always remember how very beautiful she is (because you sure as hell will after you break up). Tell her.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 02:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Stay out of them.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 04:28 (twenty-three years ago)

duane, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 04:47 (twenty-three years ago)
