ILXOR FAPs - classic or dud?

At FAPs do people just sit and talk to the people they would sit and talk to anyway, or is there genuine mingling action going on? Visiting guest stars are bound to get a bit of extra attention, so their saying "everyone was very friendly" doesn't really count.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i always imagined they just sit around and discuss the days action on ilx

schnell schnell, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic, the London ones are usually pretty friendly, I've not noticed much in the way of clique-i-ness. The mainstays are welcoming of new people, I've found.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

There is some ILX talk, of course, as it is the thing we have in common.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Guest stars provide two purposes: i) at the FAP, they can gossip about other ILXORs that they have met ii) at the next FAP, everyone can gossip about them.

I thought it was great, but then I did pick Karaoke. It's all downhere from there, I suspect.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

do you get recurring conversations along the lines of "so you have met [ilxor poster here]? Are they as [adjective] in real life as they are on the boards? please tell me amusing anecdotes about them."?

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

You can play the "Count the Grandiose Claims Game" when someone says for example: "Helix were the best band EVAH" or "Slanted and Enchanted was the worst album to be reissued evah."

Plus you have an excuse to leave the house.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Plus, stuff might happen such as the last post I made to the ILM Toronto FAP thread. Can't get much friendlier than that.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The best thing about FAPs isn't the special guests so much (though I love special guests!) it's the chance to have a chat to the people I like a lot but only really see with any regularity at FAPs. Also even if I'm having an antisocial day and end up just chatting to Tim, Pete, Steve, Emma etc. there'll nearly always be some ILXer or other getting involved and supplying a fun twist.

Does anyone want a FAP next week then?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I'd say thats pretty hard to beat Bryan.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

''Does anyone want a FAP next week then?''

yes. I'm sort of stuck doing research. an 'outing', if only for a couple of hours, would be OK.

''At FAPs do people just sit and talk to the people they would sit and talk to anyway, or is there genuine mingling action going on?''

well I've been to what, five faps and as I'm not used to mingling I do sort of wander around. But I always get to have a good chat with at least one more ILXOR every fap (+ the ones I regurlarly chat to).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"sort of wander around" = mingling, Julio!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well it was impossible for me to sit talking around to people id talk to anyway, because i didnt know any of them at first.

i like talking to new people. plus, a few of my faps are in like DC or Koln or Boston or whatever so quite often i am the new person

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone want a FAP next week then?

yesyesyes! i was about to suggest more karaoke, but i think that would clash with non/sense. i think i can make any of mon-weds, anyway.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

NYC FAPs = way way classic. Plus, we love out-of-town guests and we treat them like ROYALTY. :-)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

americans.

I have never been to a FAP.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

we treat them like ROYALTY

(which is not to say that we gossip about them constantly and have paparazzi follow them around)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

next week gareth will be starring, finally, as a superstar DJ at non/sense. Why not make Public life next thursday your FAP destination.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

ROYALTY, eh?...i'll be in NYC between the 7th and 14th of March.

Michael B, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

We do intensely grill them on the asses of NYC. Or we did at the time because it was still constantly on the new answers page.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael B, New York through March 14? Where are you coming from? I think a mid-March FAP was contemplated. Would you be available for Friday night FAP on the 14th or are you leaving that day?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

''"sort of wander around" = mingling, Julio!!''

sorry, yes. I'm dead tired today.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

You could easily play "You Are Our Guest" from the Bob and Doug McKenzie album over the soundsystem and then the room would be clearly devived between those who thought that was cool and those who think you are a mentalist.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

We're playing "Beer Hunter" for sure on Sunday, Noodles.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

We need unopened cans for that you hoser. Unless you wanna play that in the alley, either way Im still not pissing on a dumpster.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

FAPs are great of course. Remaining close and hanging out with individual ILXors afterwards, however, is CLASSIC.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

''You could easily play "You Are Our Guest" from the Bob and Doug McKenzie album over the soundsystem and then the room would be clearly devived between those who thought that was cool and those who think you are a mentalist.''

hehehe...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

im in nyc on the 14th i think!

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay! I was hoping for a MegaMeetUp with David B, too!

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I still wanna go bowling, it's my birthday in April, so I'm suggesting a FAB for mid-April.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud dud dud because there's never been a local one and I just imagine that the entire ilx-verse is out there having a wonderful time except for moi.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud because no-one seems very interested in coming to a Melbourne one. Except minna.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

mayeb you could organize one for my friend who is returning back to melbourne tomorrow after 2 years in the uk

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I'm leaving the 14th...my flights at half 8 that evening

Michael B, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a non/sense next Thursday? Cool! maybe post-rehearsal I can bring along Jesse and maybe just maybe and it's only a maybe even Hilton. Sigh. Will we be able to dance?

kate, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael B, I'm sure we can figure something out. gareth, what day do you arrive?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

not sure yet felicity, booking this week

http://www.zerointegrity.co.uk/~nonsense/non0220

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Minna not enough for you, Jim? I don't see these guys complaining:

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

(That was meant to be smaller.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

We need a "Spitalfields" in New York.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

There are good friends and so on who are more likely to talk to each other, but that is inevitable and very far from cliqueyness. There are also the odd cases of people avoiding other people, now and then but not very many at all. Generally they are friendly and inclusive and people talk to almost everyone else (though there are always people as you/they are leaving who you suddenly regret barely speaking to that night). I don't have any old friends in ILX (other than Andrew L, who I see pretty often anyway, and he's not much of a regular at FAPs), and no enemies (from my viewpoint anyway) or even anyone I dislike, but inevitably there are people I like better and talk to more.

Actually, they are just as you'd expect from what is a remarkably friendly, civil and diverse board. And yes, I want another one soon. I have no plans yet for next week (well, I have a date, but we haven't fixed the day yet, so can fit it around a FAP).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The solution, Martin is to take your date to the FAP!

Bill E (bill_e), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

That would be hilarious.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

(for both parties)

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hello ILX, this is my date (please limit ravishing to five minutes each thx)."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

"(and *I'll* deal with the double-penetration, thanks)"

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

To anyone reading this thread out of context, that looks totally appalling.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

On a tangent, I swear, about four years ago, I was walking past two guys, and one of them said, I shit ye not, "Double penetration hangman".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think me and Lynskey going to the pub qualifies.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The last few FAPs I've been to have been pretty much exactly like the ILXOR experience relocated to a pub. Especially the karaoke one.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i think i was still there then... were small goods still on then?

minna (minna), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they ended about 10 mins after i got there.. you must have walked past me on your way out (i was next to the front door with a bespectacled hippy)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, how exciting. I will.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not promising anything terribly surprising mind you.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

buy alix a pub tom

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Tonight I am going to have a bath. I think I might drink some BEER. Whilst being in the bath. And cook some more roast potatoes.

UGNUMPH. They're good.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Well still, I think Minna would have been grateful of even that. Lousy Tom Ewing.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

What about a lego pub?

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Like the Lego knights used to have?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

hmm, bespectacled hippy, can't remember... i was with a boy in a paisley shirt and i was wearing a tshirt with black inkspots on the front. we were with a short girl who kept talking to everyone

minna (minna), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

No the Lego taverns that the Lego pirates used to carouse in.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The lego piraats?

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

what is the diff between a lego bar, a lego pub and a lego tavern?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Lego bars use the stick-on decals.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

lego bar = crunchy confectionery

lego pub = traditional new town breeze block boozer

lego tavern = venue for lego pirate carousing

piraat = ruination

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

lego pub = all multipurpose brick types
lego tavern = lots of fancy specialist bricks
lego bar = it has moustachioed lego men in

minna (minna), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

doh, precious time spent googling spelling of 'moustachioed'

minna (minna), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

How about the Lego space pub?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

this is why tim is the expert:

http://www.angelfire.com/weird/legotown72/fw.html

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

my space bar is made of lego

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I know the Leg O' Mutton, Jel, but not the Lego Space.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim I know you're a keen archaeologist and I understand there may be a dig happening later.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

SINKER! One of those figures is my AUNTIE!

Tom: I'll need lots of hot water and clean trowels.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

if that lego pub is supposed to be in Ealing, I don't recognise it! Though, I'm not sure where the Finnegans Wake is.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

it could be the one on St Mary's Road on the way to TVU.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

never a boston fap. boo frickity hoo.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Lego Singles Club?

There was so a Boston FAP, it just went under the name of Terrastock FAP.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

It involved more Sangria then other perhaps.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim Hopk*ns! Why don't you come to the NYCFAP on the 14 or 15 March?

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

(I always feel bad when th Dirty Vicar's email notifications go out, like he's collecting data on me. But I know he prefers notifications "on.")

(and what has happened to DB?)

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

(I always feel bad when th Dirty Vicar's email notifications go out, like he's collecting data on me. But I know he prefers notifications "on.")

yes, I have a big dirty file about you. And only you.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

MINNA! I was only saying that they enjoyed your company! As should Jim! Platonically! Geez! (Also I think that is the greatest picture ever!)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know why you have to make it so dirty. Is it all because of that thing I said about Nick's cousin?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Have we still not arranged anything for next week? This is a bit rubbish!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

haha nitsuh, as everyone knows you're completely filthy at all times. (real reason: uncomfortable proximity of my photo to the phrase 'double penetration', so inference not really made by you at all. just this once)

minna (minna), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not in an arranging mood. Pete or Tim maybe?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

thursday, public life?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a separate thing really though Ed - it's more of an ILX event plus I assume Gareth won't be playing his recs that quietly.

But yeah, so as not to clash, Tuesday anyone?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Tuesday is a lovely day.

alix (alix), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:08 (twenty-three years ago)

its fine.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Tuesday is good for me. Where?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris and I can't do tuesday, got a 30th birthday bash.

have a lovely time if it is tue.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Good grief, someone name a place!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 13 February 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

could you organise London FAPs on another thread? I don't live in London and so can't go to your FAP next week, and as I have e-mail notification turned on I keep getting e-mails about pub meets I can't go to. Which makes me sad.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 14 February 2003 10:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I need to meet up with Andrew F to get my copy of the Comp. despite the fact that Mr Dastoor said he was making me a copy, like, weeks ago.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 14 February 2003 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Might even stay for longer this time!

Actually, that story I had last time about the 'industrial gig' was entirely fictitious. What REALLY happened is that the Scientology building down the street was...calling me. I just went there to discuss that Beck thing I wrote, and suddenly everything became Clear. They're really onto something. Anyway for a small fee I can give you some life-changing insights! A small fee once a week that is.

dave q, Friday, 14 February 2003 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

So did this idea just quietly die or should we have a FAP tomorrow?

GHS? The John Snow for a change? The Champ?

Tim (Tim), Monday, 17 February 2003 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still on. I don't know those last two pubs.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 17 February 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I should have come back to this thread sooner. Martin's response to Dan and N. silliness is stellar (and for once I'm not the one in big trouble!).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Lara - I thought jel said he had included a copy for you with the dublin ones he sent to Andrew. That is why I haven't made you a copy.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 17 February 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)
