Do you have hang-ups about being an interweb mentalist?

Or do you just say, "fuck it, my interweb mentalism is no more than what it is". The more dependent and anti-social (as a result of the web rather than being previously anti-social) people would be more conscious of this, maybe?

Yes. I have no idea what to tell people if they ask why I'm not home until 7. That is until broadband gets hooked up at home.

I have no hang-up's about being an interweb mentalist!

I don't know that many people really well (6, excluding family). Though, that doesn't mean I don't want to know people well! So, I wouldn't say I'm anti-social.

I totally have the reputation at work as the person who knows all the websites out there. Plus my brain is kind of stupid in that I'll forget someone's name I've worked with for years but I can often rattle off the appropriate URL to most any question. I feel bad sometimes because I'm afraid everyone thinks I surf the web all day.

whereas..

whereas I certainly do not! Hmmph. I'm not even in the top 50 here.

I'm not an interweb mentalist. I just have a boring job.

No, I resigned myself to the sad fact that I was a very long time ago.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole is OTM. My parents worry about me though. Working part-time from home, my dad was very surprised when I told him I do actually, like, go into London at least three or four times a week. I think he thinks you're my only friends.

We're not??

*sobs*

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I am now totally resigned to my interweb mentalism. It's pretty much all i've got left, actually.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

yes i do have one big hang-up about my interweb mentalism, which i will not air here. perhaps i am dependent on it, i don't think theres anything more wrong with that than being dependent on any hobby. i don't believe my mentalism is anti-social: i have a very fulfilling life outside of ilx and the net, a great group of friends, a great band etc, and ilx is something of a social activity anyway.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

We are on ILX = it is too late to start worrying about that now.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I worry about it a great deal, and I have loads of hang-ups. I know that despite a few good things, and some lovely people I have met here, on the whole it is very BAD for me. I am compulsive about it, and when it starts to affect my Real Life - e.g. when I stomp around angry because of something someone has said, or when it really does start to affect my IRL friendships, i.e. Hilton - I have to take breaks and go away for a week or it WILL take over my life.

I need to remind myself that I do *have* a rest of my life, my band, my friends, now my job etc. etc.

I use ILE in a bad way, I know that. A friend (I won't tell you who it was) said this about ILE, and it's the truest thing I've ever heard about why it's so bad for me:

you keep on going back to ilx because you enjoy the abuse. hey if you feel like crap why not enter into a room full of cunts to tell you you are crap and worthless though you are achieving what they want ...

I need to remember this in my dealings with it, and not provoke abuse, but just to laugh and play with the folks I really like. And there are actually a lot of folks I really like here!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont have any hangups about being on the internet, no. could probably be a bit more qualified at my job if it wasnt for internet i guess, but i can live with that;)

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

It's good for meeting/getting to know people as a warmup to REAL LIFE, too.
