The bloody old greenspun AAD has been deleted by Philip Greenspun. He's got rid of all the unmoderated or out of hand forums. This means myself and a few others are now going to have to spend hours copying and pasting the source of each individual thread out of the google cache.

Thank God for Google!

Me and Celeste have done about 60 already but we're tired and have to go to bed. We have our work cut out for us tommorow.

Please cheer me up with pictures of cats n stuff.

If anyone can think of a better way to get it all without the horrendous copy and paste session we are now engaged in will win a prize.

And how long before the Google cache disappears?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

have you tried archive.org?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:09 (twenty-three years ago)

did he actually delete the data, or just the HTML reference to it? if the latter you could beg him nicely for the data file?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking from my experiences at trying to ILM and ILE back this summer: a) archive.org doesn't archive specific greenspun forums, and 2) Google doesn't cache every greenspun thread.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:28 (twenty-three years ago)

We've already asked Mr Greenspun nicely. Due to lack of room on the server he's deleted any unmoderated boards.
Archive.org has very out of date stuff.
Google cache seems to have everything. Hurrah!! (Can we donate to Google in anyway? :) )
We also have some lurkers coming out of the woodwork who have been backing up AAD, for eventualities like this. Hurrah for lurkers!

Google last cached the AAD stuff on 11th February. Someone has said we may have 4 days to get what we want, but does anyone know how frequently google re-caches stuff?

celeste (Celeste), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know for sure, but I guess it depends on whether there's a 404 not found at the old thread addresses (good, as Google will probably try again a while later and keep the cache for now) or a new standard 'sod off LUSENET wasters' page (bad).

Seeing as no one responds to questions on 12ftlizards: Is it time to have the Greenspun boards deleted?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried subscribing to 12ft lizards but never got anything, but in answer to your question, Yes

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Copy / paste, copy / paste . . . we're getting there . . . Google don't let me down . . .

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, I've emailed PHIL!

(at the email address he's had since 1973 or summint)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

That address should work, if not ask Lynskey, he's been emailing him about the AAD boards.

We've finally managed to rescue everything off the google cache, well everything up until the point where the trolls got ridiculous and we all jumped ship.

Just got the minor task of editing all 420 pages to get rid of the google caching bit at the top of each page. Waaaah!

celeste (Celeste), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)
