At what point do conversations at work become inapprprite? Is it okay to have conversations about sexual situations and at what point does it become inappropriate. I have known some co-workers talk about genital grooming and which he/she prefers. They have also discussed the size of a partner's member. To me, this is inappropriate for the workplace.

I have no idea what is or isn't appropriate in the workplace anymore after working at my job for so long. Those people are sick bastards. I mean, they see nothing wrong with announcing which girls have the best rack, wtf?

I cannot actually admit to ever discussing the size of my wife's member with my work colleagues, but, thanks for the tip as I now have something to contribute during inter-office conversations.

What Jim said. It entirely depends on who you're talking to, how well you know them, the ir position relative to yours within the company as well, I guess, whether you're doing it in public, etc. Most work conversation is just the kind of down-the-pub banter you'd have anyway.

My normal retort when blokes cross the line - "ahem, excuse me, but can you please remember I'm young and innocent" which usually gets a laugh while subtley reminding them that some people may be offended by the subject matter!

Unless you run the company (and not even then unless you want to be Most Hated Boss of the Year), you can't really stop people talking about stuff they want to talk about. Just walk away if you're uncomfortable.

My co-worker actually had phone sex at work - he was in a corner of the office, but I could still hear him. Also, he engaged in sex chats and then printed them out and left them in the printer for all to see.

When I worked as a temp in a big company several years ago, I heard some really icky things. The worst involved one woman's best friend who showed up at her house with - let's say... - tiny bugs on her eyebrows from an incident in the dark... and... yuck.

I work with people who have, in the past, had frequent lunchroom conversations that wouldn't be out of place on rotten.com. Which I don't mind, except when I'm trying to eat :-/

We all seem to be good mates where I work, so the girls in particular have been known to go into reasonable amounts of detail... and the other week at the pub after work, the conversation thread became "how many people in our company DON'T take drugs?". We were hard pressed to come up with names. Stories of lines of coke off boardroom tables and sex in saidsame boardroom abounded. I am forever amazed at how depraved and naughty everyone I work with is (maybe thats just the IT industry, heh).

I am *so* not going to tell anyone where I work, now, or I'll get in trouble. Heh.

I'm wondering how much I should talk abt my desire to get another job. I started off keeping everything under wraps, taking a cloak and dagger approach and claiming I was taking an afternoon off to go shopping when i was actually going for an interview ect ect. But after an annoying run-in with IT Support (which included some cheeky, fresh-faced IT helpdesky person telling me how I should do my job), and the announcement that there will be no more paid overtime, I opened up and started talking abt my external applications freely.

As regards sexual discussions, I think the onus is on the offended person to complain if they think a conversation is inappropriate.

Um, I think that's fair up to a point, Mark, and works among equals, but it does risk offering more freedom to more powerful people - imagine a male boss talking in sexually explicit terms in front of or to a relatively timid female underling.
