I turned a four legged wooden stool upside down and had some thick elastic/cotton material going between two of the legs. It was very quiet but if you pressed the bone near yr ear to the wood it sounded really deep. You could adjust the pitch and timbre a bit by making the elastic tighter/slacker in real time too.

When I was little, I loved to pretend my mum's egg-slicer was a harp or an autoharp. The wires were a bit too thin and tight to get different notes out of it, though.
