Spotting this mobile phone graphic got me thinking. What's your favourite ILXism?

bert, Sunday, 9 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

That link didn't quite work, did it? It's a graphic for you mobile that declares you to be a "Mentalist" (should you ever want such a thing).

bert, Sunday, 9 March 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

'all lez up' is classic but i find 'OTM' and 'Urgent and key' a bit annoying, tho nothing to really get irked about - i dont anyone who uses these phrases in 'real' life - does anyone actually say them to their friends, relatives or co-workers?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 9 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

"do not read if you hate us"!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

http://www.ringtones.to/graphics/logos/Mentalist.gif

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I have been introducing 'urgent and key' into my IRL conversations here and there.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

At work on Friday, I actually shouted out a demand of "DOES ANYBODY IN THIS BITCH KNOW WHERE THE SWISSCOM ROAMING AGREEMENT FOLDER IS?!?!?!"

Fortunately, it just provoked a friendly round of amusing accent faking with my boss, not immediately disciplineary action.

kate (suzy), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

'And then they all lez up' is Lee and Herring anyway, isnit? The phrase 'Urgent and Key' does have some dark allure to it, but I've managed to avoid using it in Real Life so far. Patronisingly underlining arguments with DO YOU SEE is pretty great (I assume that was lifted from Digitiser. RIP n'all.).

Destroy: Anything that has arisen from an 'hilarious' typo.

Ferg (Ferg), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

search: cockfarmer. still my favorite.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought DO YOU SEE? was Lee & Herring too. Well, RH certainly used to say it a lot.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Urgent and Key I've used at work, it sounds more demanding then high priority or level 1 severity.
Cockfarmer and mentalist are grebt!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 9 March 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

'urgent and key' comes from the corporate office environment anyway i figure...and mentalist is hardly an invention of ILX, more a general phrase i've heard everywhere for years

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 9 March 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I think "we've done this" is a bit overused.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 10 March 2003 01:41 (twenty-three years ago)

'Urgent and key' is of course officetalk parody and came from mark s. I then said 'can I adopt that as my new catchphrase?' and I can't remember if he said yes or not.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 10 March 2003 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

search: almost all of em, especially the ones that don't even make sense ("oh no! xx! OH NO!!").

destroy: "grebt," which bugs me because I can't figure out how to pronounce it.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 10 March 2003 08:09 (twenty-three years ago)

why do you hate fun?

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 10 March 2003 08:46 (twenty-three years ago)

'Procrasturbation' is sadly underused.

'Statscock' and 'lez up' are obviously so classic it hurts.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 10 March 2003 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Couldn't possibly agree more re 'grebt' for all the reasons mentioned. I tend to spell and pronounce it 'grate', because that's what it DOES!

I can't form an opinion about 'mentalist' at least until I have at least some notion what the hell it means.

Fred Nerk, Monday, 10 March 2003 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

mentalist means lunatic, i can't remember when i first heard the term but i'm sure it was long ago in the school playground, alongside 'flid kid', 'spazmo' and the ubiquitous 'divvy'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 10 March 2003 10:36 (twenty-three years ago)

joey deacon windowlicker sunshine bus cru

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 March 2003 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm down with the statscock.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 10 March 2003 11:34 (twenty-three years ago)

You pronounce it "grebt".

U & K is the only thing mentioned that was born on ILX.

"(and can we eat them?)" and "(do not read if you...)" both still raise a smile.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 March 2003 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like obv.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 March 2003 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

When I see 'obv' or 'rub' I have to discipline myself not to immediately assume the poster is obv talking rub.

'Prolly' works on me like electric shock therapy.

Fred Nerk, Monday, 10 March 2003 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

that's useful to know!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 10 March 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Did I get 'recockulous' from here?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and fux0r has crept into my everydayspeak.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

koritfw!

hstencil, Monday, 10 March 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Hein?

(as in 'search' and also directed at hstencil).

Sarah (starry), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

koritfw! = Keep on Rockin' in the Free World! I dunno, maybe it's more of a geeta-sim than an ILXism.

hstencil, Monday, 10 March 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and fux0r has crept into my everydayspeak.

??? But it's pronounced "fuck"!? A textual convention only.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Not in my house. and fux0r = fucker, right?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

[Geeta, Hstencil, any old poster] i kiss you. Also hugglez.

A Brand New Twee (Arthur), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

geeta didn't come up with that, it was dj sonic jesus

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

suxor has creeped into vocabulary, and i am resolved to use mentalist more.
i used cockfarmer once, and someone thought that i was saying that i was gay, which i am not, and it was an akward moment, cause they seemed to be all proud of me for being so honest and "coming out".

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I like them all, I'm undiscriminating to a fault. Oh, except for bootyflakes! Burn this word, pour salt on it and then pour concrete over the remains.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

"why does [x] not wanna rock?" (actually maybe only used once outside the original, but it has the potential)

g.cannon (gcannon), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sayin' she came up with it, jess, just that she gets a lot of mileage with it.

hstencil, Monday, 10 March 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it is one of those "a-i-m" sayings. It makes no sense to me!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i use "i blame hstencil" at work a lot

mark s (mark s), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I asked one of my colleagues why they hated fun last week.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

jess & dj sonic jesus i kiss you

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

The ultimate metathread, this. Is my ;-) a catchphrase?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 March 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i use "i blame hstencil" at work a lot

between gareth and mark s, this seems to be somewhat of a new catchphrase. I wholeheartedly encourage its use.

hstencil, Monday, 10 March 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i blame gygax!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 March 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I often wander round work and just go up to them and say "Goole?" or "Huddersfield?"

chris (chris), Monday, 10 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i used "herosexual" yesterday

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 March 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I was wondering about that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 March 2003 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been saying "gaysexual" for ages...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 10 March 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

ned! i got yr cd THNKEE and your winkyface is in full effect! sideways and everything!!

ron (ron), Monday, 10 March 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Rah! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 March 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The only one I use in real life is "I hate fun," "Do you hate fun?" etc. etc. It's a good catch-all put-down.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 10 March 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Put-down?

Tim (Tim), Monday, 10 March 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I drew a picture of myself with a caption reading 'I hate fun' in the deli paperwork folder at work. Next time I looked at it someone had crossed out 'fun' and replaced it with 'biscuits'. Why, I'll never know.

alix (alix), Monday, 10 March 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, "So-and-so hates fun." Put-down. Insult. It's inarguable and frustrating.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 10 March 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Also you don't hate biscuits.

Fun-hating is a badge of pride for the Brits Nick.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 March 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't understand ned's 'rah'. i've only seen it used in exclamation of surprise, and even then occasionally soundng like 'rare'

eg "rah! 3 packs of crisps! that's a lotta crisps"

zemko (bob), Monday, 10 March 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

hoorah

ron (ron), Monday, 10 March 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

What Ron said.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

sodomising bee stick, U & K, do you hate fun?, herosexual

have all entered my vocabulary

"the sodomising bee stick is not a punishment"

Cozen (Cozen), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

no, it's funishment

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

isnt the whole fun of fux0r is that you can say fuck-sor??

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I use/have used cockfarmer, 'does anyone in this bitch...', and 'but can we eat it?' IRL. I'm kind of annoyed by friends that regularly use rox0r/fux0r/other hacker slang in routine speech though.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 March 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah but saying "it's all fux0red up" is great when you can pronounce it like "fuck sword"!

"You hate fun" is the one I say the most (but then again I was already prone to saying "...but keep in mind, I hate fun" beforehand, so this has just reinforced it).

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 10 March 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just finished reading a book wherein one of the characters hates fun. It's one of her defining characteristics, and the phrase "she hates fun" is used rather a lot. Actually I don't think it's used that much, but it jumped out at me whenever it was used.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot that I probably use "do you hate fun?" more than anything else. Whoever said that it's unanswerable was OTM, you can get anyone to agree to anything accusing them of hating fun. Extremely useful.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

search: pervertalist

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

"Do you hate fun?" is grate, but "Do you like Hitler?" is even bettah!

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

(dear lord I'm turning into a fuX0ring ILX drone just like the rest)

Search: Destroy
Destroy: Search

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

i use "do you see?" in e-mails at work when telling art directors how they might want to change a magazine cover they've designed. "see" works on two (obnoxious) levels in this context and i can't help myself.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely fux0r and sux0r and the like arent from here!? I've been using said terms on chat thingars for fnyears. Honest, I have.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm kind of over most of these, and try to stick to my native tongue. some of them are fun, though - no doubt.

my vote for the most useful is k-_____

ron (ron), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been yelling FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING FUCK at people for a couple of days now, it seems rather catchy

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been yelling FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING FUCK at people for a couple of days now

I just imagine it as the greatest chorus ever, set to a kraftwerk-y disco beat.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck the millennium, indeed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 02:57 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Please, pretty please, no more "________ to thread". It is driving me nuts!

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 9 October 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

N. to thread.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG to obvious post...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mean that violently.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Destroy: 'teh'.

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 9 October 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I must admit I never got the "teh" thing. Probably coz I know people who have Teh as part of their name.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 9 October 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind any of them.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 9 October 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG LOL WTF!

holojames (holojames), Saturday, 9 October 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck 'fuck ___ing a _____'.
