I have engineer's block.

Neither reducing the system to its component parts nor thinking of the system as a whole is helping. I also ache all over from a weekend of drinking and sleeping in a tent and this is not conducive to my creativity.

What do people do to overcome creative blocks?

Sleep. Or coffee.

i just do something else for a little while. sometimes a cigarette helps for the smokers, and a nice snack is good as well. the best advice ever, though this probably doesnt apply, is the advice i got from a dj website: if you are making tapes, keep some gummy bears handy!

I take a break.

Usually just do something else for a while. Rest, read up, chat with friends, go outside for a walk -- try not to directly concentrate on the block or what you're doing.

Do some aerobic exercise. It is very boring and your mind will wander, maybe somewhere good.

sometimes it helps me to think about something that is somehow opposed to what ever is bothering me. for instance, if i am practicing with my decks and start getting pissed off, i go listen to jazz. maybe you could look at some abstract expressionist art on yr computer because it is much different than engineering!

sleep.

pace.

Imagine my disappointment to find this thread has absolutely nothing to do with constipation.

I am very very good at pacing.

I am at a stage where I have generated the most obvious solutions to my problem but none of them are particularly elegant or simple. I'm not looking for a eureka moment just a slow iteration to a final concept. i need a body of concepts to generate something that will work.

I like thinking of that last post as a personal ad, Ed.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

go photoshop a fake tortured teen and put it up on makeout club and redirect the replies here. It'd be interesting.

Ed (dali), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

AHEM.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

You could intergrate till that became more tedious.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of constipation, is anyone aware of what might be called "traveler's constipation syndrome"? Just wondering.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

ive been enduring a kind of blockage lately, unable to think of anything to write or say or do. i think you just have to keep breathing through it, ride it out and not focus too much on what the problem is.
doing something that is not your usual pattern or routine often helps, as does meditation ( but you dont want to go meditating on why you are feeling stuck! ).

tracer, doesnt it happen because sometimes people have a subconscious block about using 'strange toilets' ? i knew a woman who was a courier driver and 'held on' all day rather than use a public loo. she constantly suffered from bladder and urinary tract problems as a result.

I just give up.

Switch-off and do something mundane for awhile, inspiration lurks in mysterious places.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm trying eating curry to get the creative juices flowing.

(suzy, it would be purely as an aesthetic experiment)
