Well?

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

yesterday watching my dog lay in the window and sleep in the sun brought a huge smile to my face.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

i am reading supplement ot the journal of the old testament called queer commentary and the hebrew bible, which contains an essay called Yahweh as Top: A Lost Targum (which means an Aramaic translation or paraphrase of a portion of the Old Testament) , constructed as a dialouge at first b/w yhwh and moses and then later a council of the holy and the perverse (ie de sade, lacan, freud, masoch, yhwh, moses, deleuze), it is dirty, blashpehmous, serious, sacred, frightening, offenisve, moving, fun and anarochnistic.

it also made me think, deeply, about wether my realtionship with god, the god on the cross, and the father figure in the clouds, and the holy spirit who chides and castigates in love could be viewed as a freudian construct. namely, is giving up everything, grovelling at the feet of some one more powerful, begging to die, expected to die- masoschistic in my part. is notcing his aching, and dying body dragging the cross, being whipped, and strung up and left, gaining comfort in him being strung up and begging to be forsaken sadistic ?

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I managed to get up on time today! Had a weird dream this morning about being a very reluctant diamond thief.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

The cable company couldn't find our address when I rang up to ask for a second cable point because we were marked inactive. And since they weren't billing us for that period, they never can, and can only bill us from now on!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

im staying at my friend's parents house, and the father makes me a big glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice every morning!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

my current triumphs and successes:

debut DJ slot went very well and i got mucho dinero for just 3 hours work (although its a lot more if you count the time i spent mixing stuff and burning it to cd)

bought the last pack of Orange Kit-Kats in SPAR yesterday

have discovered the joy of Vanilla Coke laced with Jack Daniels

stevem (blueski), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

vanilla coke with jack daniels! hmmm, ill have to try that one.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Got a good pay rise and decent bonus.

Had some good ideas for birthday.

Went to two excellent previously unvisited curry houses at the weekend.

Finally tackled 102 BT and banished the 9-month guilty feeling, also remembered how good most of the entries are.

Helped draft Geezaesthetic Manifesto.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Bought a couple of books at a local supermarket today for £1.99 ea. They weren't Barbara Cartland books, either.

Bought a can of Red Bull for no reason whatsoever, and I guess my only delight there is *not* drinking it, because I know full well it's 99% certain to turn my stomach over a few times...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Had a good weekend mending tents, packing camps, drinking beer and singing out of tune. Cooked breakfast for 50 people, twice. Have learnt to control a sewing machine a bit better but have decided I will never be an expert.

Slightly sullied by the fact that we failed to agree on a stategy for a building which is at the heart of our stores operation. (kitchen needs a new floor surface to comply with H+S regs the most suitable flooring is v expensive but comes a 15 year guarantee, however the building may last that long as it is built on a fen and is already over 50 years old and is missing a tie bar and apears to be more repairs than building)

Ed (dali), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Had a good weekend mending tents, packing camps, drinking beer and singing out of tune

Since when did you become Captain Crusty?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

-The Kinks
-Mott the Hoople
-Things are going very well with girl
-I get to leave for Austin on Wednesday

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Ditto what Tom said about 102 Beats That, though on a much smaller scale.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i officially nominate Ed as the ilXOR with the most respectable job.

current delights include the fact that it's my b-day, The Clean anthology i bought on the weekend, and that i am about to get a haircut.

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

(Ed was in fact camping with hippies)

suzy (suzy), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

''Finally tackled 102 BT and banished the 9-month guilty feeling, also remembered how good most of the entries are.''

''most'' tom sez. loads of insecure writers to thread (you know who you are).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

ha, my 102 beats write up wasn't very good iirc.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Lunch with felicity just now was nice, even if we discussed dating disappointments.

hstencil, Monday, 10 March 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Happy birthday, DAve M.

I am delighted b/c I had a serious talk with my bf yesterday which did not involve any arguing or shedding of tears (not that we tend to do that!), but was just an actual factual lovey dovey serious conversation about our future.

Also, the weather is great. I only have 3 hours of work left today and haven't taken my lunch break yet (I ate at my desk), so I can think up somewhere fun to go.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just downloaded a Gonzales song (Gringo Star), it has this funny spoken bit in the middle.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and the freebie postcards I got from the Showcase in Wood Green, features drawings of Lego Batman, Spiderman, Hulk and Wolverine, it's great! I have two of them.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

ha, my 102 beats write up wasn't very good iirc.
-- jel -- (freeduni...), March 10th, 2003 6:56 PM. (later)

It had better be you fucker THAT WAS MY SONG.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

http://www.grla.co.uk/ (this is the site you should see!)

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

N, please don't beat me up!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I won the soundtrack to CQ today.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks sarah!

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I got to read more of White Noise at lunch today. I read it like 5 or 6 years ago, but apparently remember nothing from it. But it's great. Really funny in a dark way. So that, combined with The Origin of the Brunists by Robert Coover, which I'm reading at home, means I'm reading two great books right now.

Also, my boss is on vacation this week. Boo-yah!

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

(yep, hip hip hooray for dave m, on his magical birthing day!)

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

my course related costs came through today! WOOOHOOOO!

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, my "sister" is coming to visit me in April! That is exciting! I haven't seen here in nearly five years!

kate (suzy), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Unfortunately mending tents is not my job. I do it for a charity, we take kids camping in the summer, the rest of the year we mend things. Generally when we get a tent. The army used them then the scouts and we get them when they can't use them any more. You have to like patches really. Some of them are war surplus (korean war), most of our cooking equipment is WW2 surplus.

Ed (dali), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I was out with a couple of great friends yesterday to see Adaptation, which I really enjoyed. Oh, and Tate Britain before that. Tomorrow I'm off to see a film at the Japanese Embassy, Thursday we have a FAP, Saturday Bristol Rovers make their one visit to London of the season, so I get to see them (I know, Tim, I'm a lightweight). It should be a good week, except last season the game was dismal and we got beaten 3-0, so it might end badly.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 10 March 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

tomorrow i don't have to go to school! yay! quiz team contest instead.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 10 March 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Tonight is bowling night! New people are threatening to come! It should be tons o' fun!

Also I have stopped drinking coffee. Well for a few days. And I'm not sure how I feel about it just yet. Friday I had a big headache and Saturday and Sunday I was totally feening for a cup. Now I am feeling weird and tingly and I want a cup quite badly. I haven't decided whether my goal is to cut it (mostly) out or to just cut back so I'm not drinking it every day. Or if I'm just being silly.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

You're just being silly.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

pre-ordered a bunch of CDs out next week

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The weather is DC is beautiful today, and I spent an hour or so drifting about Georgetown while my car's oil was being changed. And then I had Mexican food for lunch.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Georgetown on a pretty day!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 March 2003 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I met loads of nice people in Nottingham over the weekend. which was nice.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Now I have gotten my haircut! Whoosh! And it's a gorgeous day, all sunny and with a nice crisp breeze. And I still have bowling to look forward to. We shall see what comes of my Lenten vow to give up this (involuntary) celibacy...

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I just saw Secretary last night and it gave me pleasant rowry dreams. Plus I'm getting a bonus from my job that is equivalent to my year's salary.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I was completely surprised to learn that Matt Tow was in town and is playing guitar in Brian Jonestown Massacre for the tour this month. And the show Saturday night was great!

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

di - you can get georgina fixed. (is that her name?)

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Plus I'm getting a bonus from my job that is equivalent to my year's salary.

Hm. While I rather like having a stable job these days, I admit that's very tempting sounding. But do you get any sleep?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I went to the campus library to find a few things and found a copy of Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. The weather has warmed up, which I'll be bitching about in a month but is nice at the moment. I have a new permanent email account courtesy of a friend. I've had three writing breakthroughs this week with the story I'm working on at the moment. I have diet Vanilla Coke, green Hawaiian Punch, and hamburgers. I have a bottle of Dutch gin (Bols), which tastes extremely different from the gin I'm used to.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and I got bagels today from Bayou Bagelry, the only place I've found in Louisiana that makes bagels that aren't just white bread with dimples. That's actually the highlight of my day, really.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

that pre-exam resignation to failing, notice I'm happily here and not reading up on gametophytes, sporophytes etc. for entry level biology. But having decided to blow off any real studying, the free time is exhilarating.

divya noguchi (divya), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Current delight = A brand spanking new minidisc with dizzE rascals - i luv you and timbalakes cry me a river and assorted other goodies which i get to listen to on the way up to uni AND earphones where sound comes out both the left and the right 'phone, something i've not had since i got my minidisc player. wonders will nevah cease.

Sadly: i'm up in three and a half hours to go sit my exam.

Scary fact: i'm still not in bed

Jeffrey (Danny), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 04:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, I know am very lucky (always have been). You'll probably want to kill me but I actually work out of my house and car and due to where I live everything is very easy to do so I've never even come close to working over 40 hours a week. Ask Anthony M. I've spent weekdays eating pizza, playing on the web and watching Buffy. He's been witness to this.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

*chuckles* Nice work if you can get it, indeed. I'd do the same if I could. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 06:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been namechecked TWICE on the most shaggable indiechick thread!

Wooooo!

kate, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I am quite happy today! Of course in about 30 mins of office/FINANCE MEETING (haha I am actually glad I am getting to DO something that's how bad it is) I am sure I won't be but right now I feel okay, if somewhat sleepy. I am going to go and have a *hot chocolate* which makes me happy and my hair looks okay!

Blimey how little does it take eh?

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Undercover Brother on Sunday which perked me up no end. I saw Far From Heaven last night and thought I'd hate it, but loved it. Then, in search of more cultural distraction from work annoyances I devoured an Anne Tyler last night too.

Grebt.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

!!! Is Undercover Brother out yet?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose it must be, it's not really the sort of thing to be on at a film festival.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Undercover Brother got the bizarrest release in the UK. Suburban London (black areas - for which see Nick's thread on if he is black for distributors idea on this one) - plus showtimes in the Disney slot and the Horror slot.

It is very, very good.

Ah the Dublin Film Festival, I have fond memories of ye.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I dyed my hair shiny blackish and it still has the nice faint chemical dye smell. Mmm, developer.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Kate

The ambivalent brilliance of Cody ChesnuTT

staying a non-smoker through a weekend of
excess and late nights in london despite being
surrounded by smokers. a non-smoker ! still !
since januray 3rd !

piscesboy, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was Mira Calyx excellent? The small excerts I heard on the radio were most interesting.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard her being interviewed by Kevin Greening on the World Service the other night. She was talking about how she was trying to get a license to use a box full of insects in her performance - did they appear?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Just check at the HMSO site:
Licence for use of box of insects and/or rodents in a musical performance £50 per kg of creature.
(As opposed to the licence the Austrian Vegetable Orchestra needed to play the Barbican the other week).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

A sort-of delight...

Things look *quite* promising re. selling the house as of today, and without hiring an estate agent to boot. It all depends on what the impending offer turns out to be.

Moving is scary. But staying here is ever scarier. So I'm being hopeful.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Re. Mira C at the RFH: there were screen projections of insect visuals (which looked pre-recorded) - not for the squeamish. A box of insects was in evidence but I was sitting too far back to see exactly how she deployed them. Aurally, it was hard to tell where the insect sounds stopped and the strings started (shades of Toop and Beresford at the London Musicians Co-Op circa '75/76) but the whole thing was extremely affecting. Emotional rather than arid. Certainly preferred it to Mr Hirst's butterflies...

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Christine, I still recommend getting a free valuation from an estate agent before you accept any offer.

My promising week is going well. I was at the Embassy Of Japan tonight and saw an absolutely wonderful film called I Are You, You Am I - and for free too! Tomorrow afternoon I have a big presentationy thing which is part of me trying to get my way at work, so I hope the positive run continues.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

PS2!!! I have been playing the fucking thing all day, the Getaway is kinda hard to get into at first but once you get past the intro phase and into the serious obsession part it is very hard to stop.

Other than that it's a bank holiday weekend coming up and I am going to be baron von marlon.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

IT'S GOING TO BE 60 DEGREES IN CHICAGO THIS WEEKEND!! YAY!!
(for those not from Chicago, Monday was supposedly the coldest recorded day in our history)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

seeing dave mckean art writ large across london and the rest of the country as part of the recent Social Work campaign:

http://www.socialworkcareers.co.uk/resources/hp_errol.htm
http://www.socialworkcareers.co.uk/resources/hp_patrick.htm

there are about 6 of these, have been in the papers for about a year now, but only errol has had the billboard treatment.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh - I saw that in Archway Station on Saturday and thought it was fantastic. It is - isn't it. Fantastic that is.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought a jumper and a moomin book, and I have Friday off!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave McKean did some nice work for me years ago too (just one cover, I think). Can't say I'm a big fan of his art really, though.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I am officially ON HOLIDAY. This means that I can now go to the BOOZER without any of my usual schoolnight restrictions. Delight piles upon delight.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Current delights: anxious/excited/super-hyped to be playing a show with an awesome North Carolina based funk band this Friday at one of my favorite venues within 200 miles radius. Overjoyed to finally be stepping up into the realm of digital recording, having just gotten a sound-card & recording software for my PC. Ecstatic to be burrying my 4-track and hundreds of tapes in a time capsule this weekend.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

that "! ! !" is pronounced "Chik Chik Chik"

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Finished re-furbishing an antique china cabinet for my wife last night for our 6 month wedding anniversary today. She doesn't know about it as I've been doing it in my friends basement, but I hope she will be joyed!

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 14 March 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

My band has 3 shows this week.
And I was quoted twice yesterday on the "posts that made you laugh out loud" thread, thus validating my existence and proving that I am much more productive when my boss is on vacation.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 14 March 2003 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Also my guitar playing is coming along, recently I've learned "I'll Be Waiting" by Mr. Prewitt. I may contribute an acoustic ditty to the next ILX comp rather than a freestyle rap.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 14 March 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend Joe was visiting from NYC. We met at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in Los Feliz and then just wandered around the neighborhood and reminisced for a couple of hours. He's very happy these days, I'm not but that's OK.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 14 March 2003 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

clare: screw georgina, she can go back to oamaru where she belongs and dad can fix her. i'm spending my course related costs at killrockstars.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 15 March 2003 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I got a Gamecube for £80!! yay!!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 15 March 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I've finally bought some recs (after a few weeks of not doing so)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 15 March 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I got a Gamecube for £80!! yay!!

What a bargain!! Was it second-hand, or did it, uh, fall-off-the-back-of-a-truck?

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 15 March 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

It was from Argos! Wahoo!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 15 March 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I just saw Bristol Rovers demolish Leyton Orient. 2-1 in fact, but three or four nil would have been more representative. Their goal came from a dodgy penalty, and they hardly bothered us otherwise. We hit the woodwork and had a bunch of close things and misses that shouldn't have been. I see looking at the results that only one of our rivals won (beating one of the others, so that's tolerable). We're three points clear of the drop zone now, and I'm more optimistic than I've been for a while.
