there are some tracks I woiuld delete ( Cowtown,Pencil Rain) - but other than that I feel so free when I listen to things like "Snowball in hell". What pop craftsmanship ! Does anyone agree? share your thawts!

"Anna Ng" is a fantastic song and was the start of my TMBG fandom. Sadly, it was also the end of my TMBG fandom.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"ana ng" is beautiful. if you disagree with me you are gay.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry BOOO!! TMBG IS LOVE! ;-)

I love when the play "Shoehorn With Teeth" in concert and people MOSH to it. There's something just so right about it.

But, um, shouldn't this be in ILM?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Ana Ng has such a great video I dont mind what list its on.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

"everything" includes music, right?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ana Ng" references the '64 World's Fair in Corona Park, Forest Hills, Queens. My mom, a freshman at Agnes Scott College at the time, attended. Recently she and I went to the Queens Museum of Art, which is on the grounds of the World's Fair.

Sorry that's all I have to say.

hstencil, Monday, 10 March 2003 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

'cowtown' has that amazing part in it, you know what i'm talking about, like right before the verse starts. and 'the yellow roosevelt avenue leaf overturned' which is an amazing lyric.
'pencil rain' is a good tune too.

i'd totally scrap 'you'll miss me' and 'santa's beard' - otherwise it's perfect!

john fail (cenotaph), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Recently she and I went to the Queens Museum of Art, which is on the grounds of the World's Fair.

That's a great museum.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Hells yeah it is - it's got the Panorama of the City of New York! That's like the coolest thing ever!

hstencil, Monday, 10 March 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

So Dan, you turned on your radio, and Ana Ng was on, and you said aloud" I have begun my fan time of this band!" and then when the song ended you said " I am no longer a fan of the group!" ? Weird. Do you do that with Stevie Nicks?! is Sommerville the land of the Store 24s??

Mike Hanle y (mike), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Something very close to that, Mike!

(A friend bought _Licoln_ and began playing it for me. I absolutely adored "Ana Ng", but then "Cowtown" started and I said, "NO MORE OF THAT.")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

They stole the whole concept, even their name from the Tall Dwarfs.

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 10 March 2003 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually just did the Ana Ng dance in January while visiting a friend in Seattle. Her brothers and sisters (2 of each) all have the exact same favorite bands: TMBG, The Residents and The Pogues. I was best friends with her sister and thus the random occurances of the Ana Ng dance.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, Cowtown is annoying. I myself made a Minidisc from my cassette copy so I am bumpoy fre. I find most TMBG albums are 75% good songs.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Lincoln is good but it's not Long Tall Weekend.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the only TMBG album I own (though I also have the Don't Let's Start' single ). I just play 3 tracks off it - Ana Ng, They'll Need A Crane and I've Got A Match. They're all great. "And there's a restaurant we should check out, where the other nightmare people like to go - I mean nice people, baby wait, I didn't mean to say nightmare" is a great line.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I love everything this band has ever done. I used to think they were dorky, but someone persisted with playing stuff for me some years back and it hooked me in. I like "Lincoln" but I prefer "Flood", especially after they toured here last December and at the second Melbourne show played the entire "Flood" album from start to finish in sequence. Oh! Hearing "Fingertips" live was a treat.

Also love the new album, working with Mike Doughty gives them a nice new edge. "Mr Xcitement" rules. I stop blathering like fangrrl now.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i haven't enjoyed anything they've done since 'john henry' but the early ones are great.

THE YELLOW ROOSEVELT AVENUE LEAF OVERTURNED. you cowtown haters are missing the beauty of this phrase. this lyrics alone saves the whole song for me.

john fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 03:28 (twenty-three years ago)

You bastards continue to bring up old bands I used to like and then talk about why they were good, FORCING ME TO BUY MORE RECORDS OVER AGAIN and STALLING THE EVENTUAL COMPLETION OF MY NECESSARY BACKCATALOGUE.

DAMN YOU ALL.

THIS BOARD IS A PLOT.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Note that I posted this right after hitting up ILM for recommendations as to what house comps I shd be buying. I am hyprocritical effluvia at its finest.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Could be worse, Millar, Dan P once had a batch of hataz almost running out to buy Genesis' Invisible Touch album.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't suppose you have a link for that?

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, TMBG are totally underrated, and Lincoln is probably their best. My favez: Ana Ng, They'll Need a Crane (most depressing TMBG song ever), Snowball in Hell (esp. the motivational tape bridge), Purple Toupee, Piece of Dirt, Where Your Eyes Don't Go, and Kiss Me, Son of God.
Does Geir Hongro like They Might Be Giants?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

That Genesis thread is possibly my favorite ILM moment ever.

So what about that New Toyota Ad with Phil Collins?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I still listen to Flood and the self-titled one in their entirities at least once a week. I have a newfound appreciation for "Toddler Highway" since my son was born. I alo currently get all mushy and stuff whilst listening to "Birdhouse" and "Letterbox" and "Women and Men" in particular.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, have you gotten their children's album, No!, yet?

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

they might be giants = stephin merritt + science - pretension

(I like both BTW)

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, have you gotten their children's album, No!, yet?

Hell yeah! It's actually surprisingly adventurous sonically for them (especially for a "children's album"), but the songs are classic TMBG, chock-full of great hooky melodies and stuff. I really like it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

seven years pass...

"Anna Ng" is a fantastic song and was the start of my TMBG fandom. Sadly, it was also the end of my TMBG fandom.

this is such a beautiful song, if TMBG were always that good they'd be one of my favorite bands
