Where are you from? City? Rural? If you're from a metro area, you may find it too isolated, as I did. But, my friend grew up in Chicago like me, and he liked all of his 4 years there. I will say that there seemed to be less frat/jock/sorority people there then in Champaign, where I went. That's a plus. And Chicago's only a few hours away.

I am trying to think of who Oops knew from our class who went to Knox. All I can remember is W1nter M00re.

My dad went to the Knox College that's a part of U of Edinburgh!
― Will M., Friday, 21 December 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)
I also want to know what Ian thought of Knox.
My girlfriend went there.
― jaymc, Friday, 21 December 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)
that was a lie. he went to the knox college attached to u of toronto. the u of edinburgh one is apparently called "new college"
― Will M., Friday, 21 December 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)
err, xpost... i was lying, not jaymc.
I didn't end up going to Knox; didn't even visit. Though the lady who I spoke to on the phone was very enthusiastic.

has it folded yet?
― gabbneb, Friday, 21 December 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)
Oh, I know you didn't end up going. I thought you might have visited, though.
Is this a reference to Antioch? If not, I don't get it.

Had several friends who went there, visited and stayed a few times.
Reasonably solid academically, although there's a lot of variation from department to department. It's a small school, though, so breadth of subjects is inevitably limited. My friends whine that no one has ever heard of it unless they're from Illinois, which isn't a big help career-wise.
Good campus radio station. Socially not too exciting. Has a higher-than-average diversity rating, but divided into tight, impermeable cliques. Has frats and frat houses, no sorority houses, your usual drunken carousing. Has an annual 'Flunk Day' party, where the students wake up on a random day to find classes canceled and all sorts of activities set up all over campus (water balloon fights, djs, karaoke, athletics, etc.)
Galesburg is kind of dreary. The major employer (Maytag) left town and it was never really the same. Obama was the graduation speaker there in 2005 because it was an archetypal example of a town struggling with the decline of blue collar industry. The townspeople don't like the students, and the students, a pretty significant portion of whom are upper-middle class kids from suburban Chicago, couldn't have been more condescending to the townspeople. There's pretty much nothing to do in Galesburg except go to Wal-mart and walk around the train tracks.
You're probably lucky you didn't go, Ian, though it could definitely be worse.

I went there for a semester. In retrospect, i should have stayed because it was probably the best of the colleges I went to. But Galesburg is definitely dreary. Plus, I was unprepared for the northern winters.

it is winter at knox college that separates those who can manufacture their own amusement vs those who are complacent and merely participate as i remember. they do have a good jazz program going on there, or used to. does anyone know if scott garlock still works there?http://www.knox.edu/images/_vrTour/galesburg1L.jpg
― clouds taste metallica (jdchurchill), Saturday, 1 August 2009 18:45 (sixteen years ago)
Yes, it is a good jazz program. Jazz night is now at McGillicudy's which is a step up from Cherry Street. Garlock left around 2003 or 2004, I think.
