What is THAT doing in my bookshelf/CD rack?

Thinking about the 'whose books' thread, I realized that my tastes have changed so much since i started college (and am now finishing it) that I might as well get rid of half the stuff I own and start over. I prefer Nabokov to Irvine Welsh and there's almost zero chance I'm going to listen to 'Uncle Meat' ever again.

When was the last time you noticed that your tastes did a 180?

My tastes are fairly consistent. But every time I look through my record collection, I think "oh god, this is all shit."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:07 (twenty-three years ago)

thats because you keep noticing the gap where the happy mondays records should be

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

loads of times. am now more careful. almost inevitably 5 years down the track you go: "Damn, wheres Uncle Meat"?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hey Mickey" by Lolly. What the FUCK is that doing in my CD collection? And someone ALWAYS finds it and pulls it out and laughs at it.

The truth is... Charlie bought one for all us for 20p at Woolworths, as a drunken joke. I've thrown it out SO MANY TIMES and it keeps bouncing back to haunt me.

I own the first All Saints album.

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing looks out of place! Because, I organise things in such a haphazard manner that people are always too disorientated to notice anything odd. Plus anything I don't like anymore gets 'transferred' to the wardrobe of worse still the boxes on top of the wardrobe, I have a cull from time to time.

At the time, Macy Gray sounded like a brilliant idea. No, really.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

All of those Ash singles are starting to freak me out

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 11:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll take 'em!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

There are lots of things in my record collection that I am embarrassed about. I have FOUR Manic Street Preachers albums. I am amazed at myself for ever thinking they were in any way good (those quotes from Valerie Solanas in the liner notes presented as if they were God's Honest Truth - daft fuckers). Also, Blur's "The Great Escape" sounded like a classic back in September 1995, but now, ooh, anyone up for "Mr Robinson's Quango"? And that purchase of Happy Mondays' "Bummed" - what a horrid, horrid, lumpen arse of an album.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a Da Brat album and an Eve album. I really liked my Lil Kim cd (the last one, haven't heard the new one) so I thought I might like these other two. I basically never listen to them.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm... I have Manics and Blur albums, and I'm really not sure about that anymore.

But it seems even more shameful to own an Oasis album, really. I can't even think of half a defence for it.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I have everything ever released by Toad The Wet Sprocket. But I like them....

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Before you were born someone kicked in the door, You are not wanted here any more

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

ugh...college.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Bread and Circus as well as Fear are grebt.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm... I have Manics and Blur albums, and I'm really not sure about that anymore.

Actually, to make things clear, I still do like most of Blur's output up until about '97 - Parklife and MLIR still get occasional hearings in my house - but IMHO the Great Escape has not weathered well at all.

I have also just remembered that I have somewhere Metallica's "...And Justice For All", a complete waste of time for all concerned.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

The Great Escape was '95. I guess it was sort of a rehash of Parklife only crappier.

What about the last two 'artistic' albums? There's a new one coming in May -- three years ago I'd have been dead excited, but now I'm just kind of... mildly curious.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

there are a lot of books on my shelf that i am embarassed by, but they are almost all my girlfriends. we decided to shelve everything together, which means that what would be a great collection of literary fiction is subverted by her dumb feminist novels.

i try to keep my record collection clean, but i don't really believe in being embarassed by anything.

john fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris V. I used to have everything by Toad the Wet Sprocket as well (ugh high school). I remember also spending an evening making this RS rock critic listen to Fear and Bread and Circus and trying to convince him they were great.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

where does saddam hussein keep all his CDs?

in a rack.

ken c, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

blur is an album that I disliked on release, and then got better and better as time went on. three days out of seven, I'd say it's their best.

13 sounded kind of interesting in pieces, but hasd a terrible middle section that time can't heal.

Christine is OTM about excitement levels now versus three years ago.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I always liked Modern Life is Rubbish for the questionable reason that the title's incredibly great.

I should've outgrown the cynicism this appeals to by now, though.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm... when I look at my record collection lately I just see what *isn't* there.
