Off Work

I'm off sick today. I have really bad laryngitis, my throat is really sore and every time I cough it's actually painful. I just emailed my boss to say I won't be in....I don't have enough voice to use the phone!

Are you off work? (coz of illness or for any other reason?)

I had the laryngitis yesterday, but I came in to work anyway. I can talk much better today.

I did consider going in, but I knew I wouldn't be able to work effectively and I didn't really want to infect everyone else. It was a nasty surprise as it's not something I normally suffer from and it came on so suddenly - at abt 10 o'clock last night.

oh & Colin, I've heard that in general, in Germany ppl are far less likely to struggle in regardless the way the British do with their foolish stoicism - is this correct?

I took a day's holiday today 'cos I'm off to see Michael Gira/Devendra Banhart tonight and I need to 'prepare' myself

I was off with something quite similar yesterday, but have dragged myself in today because a) there's things to do that won't get done if I'm not here and b) I want my free internet!

I wish... see my other thread.

Yes, people generally don't drag themselves in over here, and doctors are also very quick to give you a week off if you have the flu.

No, although I do have a bit of the GUTS this morning.

I've heard that this is true of the Russians too. I don't know what the general situation in the US is as regards the tendency to drag oneself into work when unwell. Personally, I think that the British stoicism is silly. I once workd with an ex-army Warrant Office who'd joined Civvy Street as part of Options for Change in the early nineties. he would proudly tell people (at great length) that he'd never had a day's sick since joining the real world, but that was only coz he'd come in when unwell and INFECT EVERYONE ELSE! Grrr.

(I've lost my voice again.)

I should've stayed home today.

Email is perfect for sickies. I've never been able to fake sounding ill, but now if I'm ever in need of a duvet day I can just send a brief email first thing in the morning. (Also, I'm public sector, so no one really cares so long as I don't go over 10 sick days per year).

I wish I lived in Holland though:

my bosses are suspicious of sickies that are called in via email. i lost my voice the other week and had to voice call in - it forced me to perform a kind of morse code with what was left of my voice - bacisally just tight but juicy coughs.
