Momus, who do you know? And do you know Stephen Duffy?

In this age of seriousness, I often find it soothing to wonder about what other famous people certain famous people know privately, or have met. Does Stephen Duffy know Momus? I have never heard them speak of each other in interviews - never read of any connections, although they surely must have met - they were both on Creation etc. ... And I wonder who dead famous people might have known or met in their life, too: it's intriguing to think, for example, that Cary Grant might have known Gregory Peck (OK, I know he's not dead) - even more intruiguing to think that these two actors may have also met Rock Hudson, and that all of them stood in one place at the same time. Did Whalt Whitman meet Oscar Wilde, does Vic Reeves know Bill Murray? This is possibly just me ...

Cash Ram, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Did Whalt Whitman meet Oscar Wilde

Yes. According to the Ellman bio of Wilde, the two even smooched.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

That was very disappointing to me when I read it. I would have hoped Oscar had better taste.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Momus' new inflatable womb is far from turgid.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

All it proves is he has no friend called Bucky Fuller.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

it prooves that even with a pump he has not got enough puff.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

When Oscar was in America, he had a meeting with Whitman, from what I remember, Oscar thot Walt was a boor, and Walt thot Oscar a pseud. Which just goes to prove that just cause you fuck boys doesnt mean you like others that fuck boys.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

(ans to SD question on thread is 'yes, but not well' I believe)

Stephen Duffy is a very fey, very nice man.

Ew! Stubble burn.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, sorry to waste your time, Ned - indeed I already knew about Wilde and Whitman: The Ellman biography settled that particular question, following years of theraputic wondering about such an event. Neverthless, I thought it would be tantalizing to pose this question rhetorically.

Cash Ram, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

John Malkovich knows Charlie Sheen.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Wilde didn't like bears, apparently.

hstencil, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzy, how do you they know each other?

Cash Ram, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"hey, Chuck. What's up?"

g.cannon (gcannon), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Thread sidetrack of the day so far.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

it's only 7:30 in CA!

g.cannon (gcannon), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Cash, I know both men. One is good friend, other was former good neighbour. Any more than that will have to be answered by a Nick post.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

That's why I said 'so far'!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I read in the Marc Almond bio that a journalist once matched him up with Morrissey for a double interview. Apar from some polite formalities they did not know what to say to each other.

Maybe Ned's camp knowledge will come in handy abt this, cause I really just flipped through the book once in a store so I only vaguely remember.

erik, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay camp knowledge! And yes, as described. The journalist wanted to sit down with her two idols, she ended up doing most of the talking and drinking, they sent her home in a cab, had a quick laugh about it and went their separate ways.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Momus is famous?

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

In his own bubble.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

thierry henry is friends with your one out of texas

robin (robin), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I just had my new supervisor ask me -- as I was listening to the Monsters of Love collection -- about who I was listening to and whether or not it was Al Stewart.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: the friendship of Marlon Brando and Wally Cox.

Archbishop Steve, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, he's heard that before. And is obviously sulking in the blowdome.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*cackles* Hadn't realized it was a common observation!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 02:35 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
revivification!

cases / moulds, Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

clarity, Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

who's stephen duffy?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kiss me with your mou-ou-outh, your love is better than wine..."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

stephen duffy, wasn't he the original singer in Duran Duran?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Duffy loves his friends.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

In that case he should tell Robbie Williams to record some of Momus's songs.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I seriously do not know who stephen duffy is, I googled it and it was no help. I guess he's one of those brits we don't know about in the US?

Teeny, he was better known as Stephen "TinTin" Duffy over here when he broke with "Kiss Me" in 85.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a year late answering this question, but I can indeed confirm that (world holds its breath) I have met Stephen Duffy. Only once, as I recall. We were with Brix Smith in a dressing room, probably at the Camden Underworld. I remember a conversation about ley lines in Malvern to which I felt I had very little to contribute. I'm sure if I were a dark-eyed, raven-haired lass he would have pursued, wined and dined me, though. And I would probably have succumbed to his fey Tintinesque charm.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sad that more people don't immediately know duffy is in the lilac time who are fabulous.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"Gregory Peck (OK, I know he's not dead)"

Well yes, it is a year on, but thanks very much for answering my question, Momus. As therapeutic as the wondering always was in the short term, the 'not knowing' ultimataly bugged me.

Who's been in whose company ... There's so much left to wonder about!
I sometimes wonder if people in the future will wonder if I ever met some of the people I'm meeting now. I met Rob Dean - the lead guitarist in Japan - last summer. He was selling hand painted tatting shuttles at crafts fair in San Jose. I took the opportunity to ask him if, to his knowledge, David Sylvian had ever met Green Gartside. He said he should think so, but didn't know for sure.

Cash Ram, Friday, 28 May 2004 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never met David Sylvian, but I'm rather curious about him. I spent a while last night rummaging through his early sartorial affectations as documented on

http://www.nightporter.co.uk/

When I lived in Paris I used to hang out with Andreas from Propaganda, and he'd tell me about Sylvian from firsthand experience -- apparently he was (at least in the 80s) very much into cocaine and hetero-sex. Not as delicate, effete and ascetic as he seems, then.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 28 May 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

My illusions lie, shattered, at your feet.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Friday, 28 May 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Momus know Patrick Duffy?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 28 May 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i've met green gartside a few times but i am not famous

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 28 May 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to meet Green Gartside, Stephen Duffy, and David Sylvian. Though I am one of those non-famous individuals so if indeed I do get to meet them, it still wouldn't pertain to this thread. :)

Momus (and everyone else), did you know that the person responsible for the Nightporter Japan fansite, Paul Rymer, is one of the contributors to the ultimate Duran discography, i.e. Tom McClintock's Duran Duran discography? And, as already stated, Stephen Duffy was the original lead singer for that band. And to tie it in with an earlier mention of Marc Almond, this original Duran lineup had a sound that was apparently similar to that of Soft Cell's "What?", at least according to Their Story.

*ahem* Sorry. Fangirl attack.

Those Beautiful Lines (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 29 May 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I love music, but have become increasingly less besotted with the personalities behind it. As a kid, I would have trembled at the thought of meeting Morrissey, Mark Hollis, Ian McCulloch and, yes, Momus and Stephen Duffy. I've since been lucky enough to meet two of these through my work, and I found them to be absolutely charming.

Now, there's only one really one person living I'd get excited about meeting in music: Leonard Cohen. Who does it soothe (or thrill) me to wonder if he's met? Ned Raggett.

stork sb, Sunday, 30 May 2004 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't assume, just because Green Gartside contributed vocals to her album, that Kylie has met him:

'VH1: You actually got Scritti Politti's Green Gartside singing on the album.

KM: I wanted that kind of sound - minimal beats, a little softer on the edges than what we'd done with Fever. To this day I haven't met him! I left a message on his answering machine, saying, "Hi, it's Kylie! I just wanted to say thanks so much! You sound brilliant!"'

Cash Ram, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

When I lived in Paris I used to hang out with Andreas from Propaganda

Propaganda had someone called Andreas? *confused*

OleM (OleM), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Andreas Thein. He was on "Dr Mabuse" (that's his voice you hear at the beginning: "The man without shadows..." etc.) but quit the band before they recorded A Secret Wish.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 14 January 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

I just had my new supervisor ask me -- as I was listening to the Monsters of Love collection -- about who I was listening to and whether or not it was Al Stewart.

I once asked Al Stewart about this.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Saturday, 14 January 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I've never met Darnielle, no. I imagine him as a sort of John Humphrey Noyes character.

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 15 January 2006 23:14 (twenty years ago)

I am pretty sure the two ILXors I had breakfast with this morning have not met Ned. I think he's been slacking a bit lately, frankly.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 16 January 2006 00:29 (twenty years ago)

I have never had the pleasure bemusement emoticonsternation pleasure of meeting Ned.

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 16 January 2006 00:37 (twenty years ago)

does momus ever see my hero lawrence heyward around.

Since I'm usually in Berlin, Osaka or New York and he's usually in London, we don't see much of each other these days. In fact, I haven't even heard the latest Go-Kart Mozart record.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 16 January 2006 00:39 (twenty years ago)

I havent met ned! But this looks to be rectified in the '07, yay!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 16 January 2006 04:15 (twenty years ago)

I think he's been slacking a bit lately, frankly.

Don't give me that. I can't be everywhere at once (yet).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 January 2006 04:20 (twenty years ago)

See! It was hours before you responded! That used to take you roughly three and a half seconds. You are slowing down, old man!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 16 January 2006 09:56 (twenty years ago)

Pete Burns, has he ever met Boy George, does anyone know?
