Scrubs - C/D?

second series is proving as funny as the first - these things benefit from the larger writing teams i guess. despite the somewhat anodyne nature of the format i can just sit there and watch it and i will genuinely laugh out loud on several occasions even though JD's cheesy cod-philosophical narration every weeks is nearly as bad as the little kid from 'Taken' - still you get cute tussles between Dr Cox (who seems to be 'nicing up' sadly) and his ex-wife now and then, funny imaginary sequences from JD, the exchanges between JD and the janitor but the real stars are Dr Kelso and his lawyer right?

let see some love for the show Ed as well - just as quirky and laviciously american, as Scrubs but the bastards at Channel 4 do not seem to consider this show good enough to fill an Ally Mcbeal type evening slot - which is utterly incorrect

if these TV shows were bands who would they be?

I love "Scrubs" and hate "Ed" with a firey passion unseen on this Earth since Lucifer was cast screaming from the gates of Heaven.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

You say that every day, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i love scrubs. yes, that is all i have to say, except maybe it is v. funny.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Scrubs-Classic! NBC's scheduling treatment of the show (dropping new eps for reruns of other shows and the like)-Dud!

ditto on both counts for Ed as well.

Are we talking horse here?

always thought it was like a less successful version of the funny that 'malcolm in the middle' gets right so often, but it seems to have gotten somewaht better recently. (i think we're still on season 1 here.)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan whats your beef with Ed? i dont think its any more saccharine than Scrubs can get, and i think Ed is as likeable as JD if not more so - this view was compounded when Ed actually turned up in Scrubs as JD's brother recently! oh how we laughed...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

please dont make me add 'Ed' to the list of 'stuff Dan Perry and i disagree about' which currently only appears to include 'Leftism' ;)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed's appearance on "Scrubs" was classic because there was a core of ultrarotten meanness in his character that made for some excellent jokes. I've just never gotten behind the premise of "Ed"; it just strikes me as a subpar dramedy, kind of like a more light-hearted version of "Judging Amy".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

but Ed is just classic for the way he and his friend are always betting each other 10 bucks to do stupid things like 'finish that steak with your shirt off', 'flirt with the waitress using a British accent' and 'sing at those people in the bus shelter'

Ed's assistant at the bowling alley (who looks suspiciously like Christian Slater) also great, he calles Ed 'Bossco' which is enough for me alone

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

the no shirt scene has been stored in my mental wank files.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

whats a mental wank?

I like Scrubs a great deal, and Ed's pretty good. Ed can vary from sheer brilliance to schmaltz garbage, sometimes in the same episode. Dr. Mike Burton and the high school kids (especially Warren Cheswick, but really all three of the main teenagers) are the best part for me. Burton's a great straight man.

Plus, guest star Sabrina Lloyd? Cute. So damn cute.

I hope neither of them gets cancelled after this year - I don't think either of them are doing as well as they need to.

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

yeh i get that impression too - esp. with Ed. i dont see why Judging Amy can be so big but Ed can't, haha they actually referred to Judging Amy in an episode of Scrubs too (all these shows are made by same people right?). Scrubs has caught on a bit more here cos it was only shown on terrestrial late last year and was scheduled perfectly (thursdays 10.30pm) but Ed was all over the place in the UK (weekday afternoons, then friday night at about 2am - wtf?!).

three years pass...
Braff quitting after current series ends

Always an interesting quandary when a popular show's lead character quits. I've not caught up beyond end of fourth series yet and suspect the show has already run out of steam anyway but with so many other good characters to consider, would they try and replace JD or have to pull the plug entirely?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

they should make that reall asshole guy the lead. he's my favourite character. or his hot wife.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

i thought you were talking about the janitor at first and i was thinking 'when do we get to see his wife?'

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

i saw braff on punk'd last weekend screaming at some little kid. it was fantastic.

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

There are a lot of reasons why I probably shouldn't like this show, but I do. For me, it comes down to characters. Dr. Cox, Dr. Kelso, the Janitor, Turk and Jordan are all hysterical. Maybe not classic, but really good.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 25 August 2006 03:03 (nineteen years ago)

no Braff, no ..... ah, fuck it.....

timmy tannin (pompous), Friday, 25 August 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

NBC has never treated this show particularly well so that will be reason enough to pull the plug on it
