My 12 year old is obsessed with Dave Grohl, Kurt Cobain, Nirvana and the Foo Fighters? Should I be worried? (BTW she likes the Clash but hates Zwan.)

Lithium Lunchbox (Lithium Lunchbox), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

what advanced taste for a 12 yr old - especially the Zwan bit. you can feel happy about that at least, if the themes of her music choice worry you.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm more worried about what's in his lunchbox

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

true - seems to fit w/ the music choice though. it gives young people bad skin, lithium does, and that's often a concern as one enters teenagehood.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think it is really the content of the music though one song by Nirvana, Sliver, kind of got me thinking since she spends a lot of time at her grandmother's on weekends.
My real concern is centered on how focused she is on those bands and how she listens to the same songs over and over again. My daughter is a little obssesive about just a couple of things in life. One is school and school related activity (homework, volleyball, basketball). The other is the Nirvana/Foo Fighters complex.

Lithium Lunchbox (Lithium Lunchbox), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

sounds balanced to me - may she live long and prosper.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

You haven't seen her when her mother is running a little late in the morning and is in danger of being TARDY.

She, really is, however, quite a nice girl.

Lithium Lunchbox (Lithium Lunchbox), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

If I have children they will not be allowed to listen to anything but The Fall And Sun Ra.

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

not even bob the builder?

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it is a far more heinous crime to subject kiddies to Bob the Builder and the bloody Wiggles than something like Mark E or Dave Grohl, personally. I'd subject mine to MBV.

But then, I don't like kids.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I think her musical tastes sound great.

My students (same age) hate rock and "guitar music." This saddens me. Their favorites seem to be DJ Screw, 50 Cent, Eminem and ::shock:: Michael Jackson.

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing wrong with Nirvana and FF. Very tame compared to most bands out there.

And Zwan isn't interesting anyway. She needs some classick Corgan like Siamese Dream.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 01:04 (twenty-three years ago)

bob the builder is even bad for adults and the wiggles are slightly worse, as i recall from one terrible xmas.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 01:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Good news about the Zwan. Try some Chavez on her.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 01:18 (twenty-three years ago)

i tried pretty hard with my 4 year old to subject him to my tastes, but other than nodding his head to dub at 2 he's not to be swayed. I now find myself singing wiggles songs, catching myself thinking "thats a great little song...whos that by...aaaarggghh" (on realisation)

on the other hand my 18 month old leaped outta the chair to dance to Foo Fighters when we were watching VideoHits the other morning. And he raced back from the bathroom to get down to Khia's "My Neck, my back"...should i be worried?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 02:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried to convince her that she might like the Pumpkins. I couldn't tell if she was interested or not because I think the whole family got into a fight over who has the best version of LANDSLIDE. All I can say about that is it isn't by no fucking Dixie Chicks!

I know she doesn't share her mother's interest in Mission of Burma.

I love the Fall but I don't think she's heard anything by them except HEY STUDENT.

The main thing still is, not what she is listening to but how much time she is spending on doing it. I don't really care what people listen to but the fact that she is so involved in it worries me a bit. I guess I could calm down until it inteferes with her schoolwork. So far it hasn't. It has, thank God, replaced the Simpson's are her number 1 passion.

Lithium Lunchbox (Lithium Lunchbox), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 02:13 (twenty-three years ago)

but weren't you that obsessive at that age too?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

A steady stream of Merzbow should do the trick.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 02:18 (twenty-three years ago)

And there's nothing wrong with the Simspons. I am literally part of that family. (cousin with Matt Groening himself)

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I used to listen to the same albums over and over at that age too. Now I don't have time for such luxuries, I still have CDs in the 'to listen' pile.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember having a lot of interests and getting into a lot of trouble. I know I read more at her age but she is rapidly catching up. I don't remember being absorbed by a single band or two.
I don't think I really got into music until I was 14 or so, when I started listening to Kiss and Rush when I lived overseas. When I got back to the States I had my older sister take me to see shows but to tell you the truth, I always thought I could take them or leave them until harDCore hit the neighborhood. Then it was all over for a while.

Leee- I like the Simpson's too but not 24 hours a day. I'm telling you, these obsessions are like drugs for my daughter. BTW, do you know Lynda Barry? My daughter is a mestiza like her.

Lithium Lunchbox (Lithium Lunchbox), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 02:24 (twenty-three years ago)

My brother (he's a freshman) is just like that and he and his friends are starting a band. aside from the dinner table arguments about sellouts it's harmless. hey, it's a lot better for your daughter to treat music like drugs than to actually be using drugs.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Maria is OTM - better music than something destructive! I used to listen to Bauhaus's singles collection over and over and over when I was about 15. My mum just called it all "funeral dirge" and left me to my own devices, and I passed all my schooling fine and turned out perfectly ok.

Just don't ask me why Bauhaus, for the love of ghod.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Never heard of Lynda Barry..
Did I mention that I'M RELATED TO MATT GROENING?

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 05:12 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't, er, LB MG's wife?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 05:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know... maybe I'm beginning to sound like my dad!

Lynda Barry... the writer of Ernie Pook's Comeek. In days gone by it was usually sold hand in hand with Matt's Life in Hell to all those independent/free/alternative papers we all learned to love then hate.

If she is Matt's wife then it makes sense. I'll have to look that one up, Jim.

BTW, thanks for all the input.

Lithium Lunchbox (Lithium Lunchbox), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 05:31 (twenty-three years ago)

no they're not married, just friends. sorry

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

All this Zwan hate on this thread! Clearly that's child abuse. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking for myself, I haven't form an opinion on Zwan since I've only heard a little snip of one song that was identified as Zwan by my daughter. She immediately changed channels on the radio and declared that Zwan was not one of her favorites.

Did I mentioned that I purchased a couple of tee shirts for her today? One was a Clash shirt (green album on Blue) and the other was the Silver on Black Nirvana shirt with the spiral in front and the naughty words on back. I, however, did not notice the naughty words on the back until I took the shirt out of its package to check its size before I packed it off in the mail. I discussed this matter with her on the phone and she seemed to know the shirt from reading COME AS YOU ARE and didn't seem phased by the dirty words. I don't have a problem with them either but I know I'll be hearing about it from her mother in a few days.

Lithium Lunchbox (Lithium Lunchbox), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

This happened to a buddy of mine a few years ago -- he took it as his cue to introduce his boy to the fabulous world of HarDCore ("Dave Grohl used to be in this other band..."). Kid loved Bad Brains and Fear, couldn't get into Beefeater.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 09:26 (twenty-three years ago)

My sister is 12 also - her favourite songs are T.V. Eye and Baby's on Fire + her favourite bands are Blue and Destiny's Child. Oh, and she thinks Duncan from Blue and Richard Lloyd (from Television) are hot. Either I'm giving her balanced music tastes or warping her for life, I'm not sure.

Livvie Tapper (Livvie), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

My 12 year old is obsessed with Dave Grohl, Kurt Cobain, Nirvana and the Foo Fighters? Should I be worried?

i'd be proud. especially if he/she is a big HBC fan too.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I do dig the fact that she doesn't follow music trends her classmates in school are in to... the Brittany/Boy Band/Eninem Trinity.

Baby's on Fire.... one of my favorties when I was in High School though side 1 of Before and After Science remains my all time favorite A side of on LP.

I had a CD of Scream sent to her but it was the one that did not have Dave on it. I don't think she has listened to it yet. She has ignored the rest of Dischord altogether.
