My job is terrible. My boss is jerk. I expect to loose it in ~2 weeks anyway.

Why not quit now and start enjoying life?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic, if my savings weren't $4.12.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I just freaked out and spent an hour in Central Park talking with one of my workmates about how I hate my job.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd feel like a jerk for quitting a job when the economy is supposedly so bad. But I'm going back to school in the fall. Why not now?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't there an ILX pension?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

heh...the ILX pension fund. here's a pound.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't feel like a jerk for quitting a job when the economy is supposedly so bad if I could find another one! Or not have to resort to sticking up gas stations, or something.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

13 monsters 13 monsters

$$$ = rent, food, essentials... that is usually what it boils down to. if you can take care of the above, why sacrifice your happiness for inessential things?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

gygax! if I quit my job, I won't be able to afford rent, food or essential free jazz LPs.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel like I would be a yuppie asshole for quitting an office job over this instead of staying till I get fired.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha! real yuppie assholes are quitters!

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i say at the very least! take toilet paper from the bathroom because that is arguably essential.

free jazz collecting = a disease.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

free jazz collecting = a disease

if only there was a cure besides poverty.

I haven't bought a new LP or CD since the 2nd.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Amazing how the price of everything seemed to go up 300% after I did this a month ago

dave q, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

julio's pound is now worth 20p due to the collapse in the stock market and my fee as pension fund manager.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone please send me a "Why Postpone Joy?" bumper sticker for my cardboard box.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, you owe me 40p tax on that pound!

but seriously if you are going back to school anyway and you can afford to eat into your savings, then go for it.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I have an offer to go on tour too.... hmmm

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

there's tax relief on pensions so it actually became £1.20 before it lost value.

its now standing at 18p, further falls in the stockmarket and that advice cost a penny.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

but seriously if you are going back to school anyway and you can afford to eat into your savings, then go for it.

I did this for a few months several years ago after leaving a miserable workplace. Right now I'm looking for a job, and no one at any of the interviews I've gone on has queried the gap in my CV.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, lost it at the laundrette. It's classic while you're doing it, because it gives you the freedom to write novels, record albums, go off on tour, etc. etc. But... when it ends, the shock of going back to work is utterly mind-blowing. Not to mention the idea that you have LIVED on all that money, and when you think about it in lump sums... "shit, I could have bought a computer..." or whatever, and instead you paid yer rent and lay about writing. I dunno. There's a lot to be said for the freedom. But you have to be pretty disciplined about what you want to accomplish.

kate (suzy), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

And the money goes so much quicker than you expect it to.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The USAF is considering stop-loss (eg I cannot leave when my contract stipulates) through Dec. 2003 so I'm not going anywhere for a while (it won't affect me nearly as much as it might affect others, though) so I think you shd all quit yr jobs just so I can live vicariously through you.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

A bit of both. The relief when you quit, and those first couple of weeks of freedom are amazing. Especially if you really, really hated your job. Even though it's been difficult, I wouldn't think twice about doing the same thing again.

I had tons of plans to do stuff around the house and catch up on all my me-projects. I did bake tons of bread, make fab meals every night, sew curtains and listen to all my records properly for the first time in ages. But you have to keep motivating yourself after a while, and it's not hard for a week or two to slip by without having done anything much. Also, sometimes I started to feel like a bit of a loser for being at home while everyone else you know is working. Especially your boyfriend.

I had a small amount of savings, and I barely scraped by towards the end because I quit at the worst possible time - end of May! So temping was out because all the students were looking for work throughout the summer as well. When I did land another job, I had to wait a month to get paid (damn UK system...) and I'm still catching up financially now.

But so what? It's not the biggest debt ever, and I know I'll pay it off. I'm much more relaxed, I don't get stressed out, I've finally managed to lose that 10 lbs that 3 nights at the gym never managed to shift...

elisabeth k, Thursday, 13 March 2003 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

And the money goes so much quicker than you expect it to.

Assuming of course that you have savings to begin with :-(

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 March 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

My job is terrible. My boss is jerk. I expect to loose it in ~2 weeks anyway.
Why not quit now and start enjoying life?

Because you can wait 2 weeks until you're sacked and then claim dole money?

(Unless of course you aren't in the UK, in which case I haven't a clue)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

''gygax! if I quit my job, I won't be able to afford rent, food or essential free jazz LPs.''

I wish i'd stop eating so i could afford more free jazz. yeah you can't live without the free jazz Lps really.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Elizabeth, I lost weight when I left my office job too, about half a stone without noticing.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I am still here. This has to wait a week till my boss gets in.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I am in debt just EXISTING. I owe on student loans, credit cards, that sort of thing. Then, of course, I have to pay rent/utilities and that sort of thing. I breathe debt. I can't even think about the fact that there are people in the world who can afford to live without having a job (other than kids). I'm too full of jealousy and mad at the world. INstead, I'll live in my fantasy that everyone has to work for their money.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha. I sure shut everyone up!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Look, there's a reason I dragqueened myself Miss Visa Decline.
