Ow My Head

A 65 year old woman that I work with and I carpooled today - she pulled out of our work parking lot and some guy was sitting there still in reverse and she wasn't really paying much attention, so I said "hey be careful, that guy's been in reverse for about 15 seconds..."

She said "but how do you know?" I said "his reverse lights are on" "yes but how do you know?" "the white lights on the back of his car are still on" "is that what those are?" yep "Really?" yep.. "are they on all cars?" yep, all of them "really? not just new ones?" Nope, all of them "wow, I never knew that"

I just relayed this story to my best friend and the following is our conversation... I ask you - do I have to kill them or myself?

A: and she said "really? wow, I never knew that"
T: I didn't either
T: this is the first I've heard of it
A: I was stunned (me thinking she's taking the piss)
T: I never knew. Nobody ever told me
T: there's nothing in driver's ed that says it
A: you're kidding
T: nope, not a thing
T: I know my red lights come on but I have never had occasion to see white
A: but you've seen them on other cars?
T: nope
T: but I haven't exactly been looking either (great, that's encouraging and then how do you know that people are BACKING UP?)
T: I'll have to keep my eyes peeled now

that's pretty fucking insane

webber (webber), Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:49 (twenty-three years ago)

(said friend is 28)

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 13 March 2003 07:50 (twenty-three years ago)

wow....just, wow.

Brent (A Bettik), Thursday, 13 March 2003 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's a bad idea to depend on seeing the reverse lights, however. One should be cautious when navigating near a car with anylights on. That's the reason why most people aren't told specifically to look for reverse lights (or even told they exist).

I was never really conscious of the reverse lights, either. I'm just conscious of car lights, period.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 13 March 2003 08:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe anyone has not noticed this!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 13 March 2003 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

With people like this on the roads I'm riding the bus from now on.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a good place to be.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

So I'm not crazy then? (at least not for this reason)

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 13 March 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

They absolutely DO tell you about reverse lights in driver's ed! Also in MN they inspect your car before the driving test; if your blinkers or taillights/reverse lights don't work, you can't take the test.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 March 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

which lights what now?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 13 March 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

See my post on the "do you regard yourself as smarter than other people" thread.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 13 March 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha Arthur!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 March 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

People R dumb. I got in a tiny accident a month or so ago because I was backing out of a spot at the grocery store and this lady swerved out of her space in reverse (across from me) after I was halfway out of mine. She didn't even apologize.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 13 March 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Even I've noticed this and I'm the worst driver in the world!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Though, when I was 17 I got in a wreck because I was turning left on green and didn't check to see if it was an arrow.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I remember hearing about them in Driver's Ed.
Some people manage to get through life without having an observation bone in their body (I think that statement was Perry proof, but let's see...)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Yesterday somebody almost hit me at the grocery parking lot when they backed up BUT HAD NO REVERSE LIGHTS. WTF!?!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Honestly, I don't remember this being covered in Driver's Ed either. I made the connection myself several years into driving. I think donut beyotch is correct. Also, I was nearly blinded by the white reverse lights on one of those evil Hummer H2's last night.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never called it "the observation bone" before; mine doesn't have eyes.

(NO STATEMENT IS PERRY-PROOF.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The sky is blue.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, the Earth is the blue ball of the Solar System (along with Uranus).

(HAVE TO TRY HARDER THAN THAT, RAGGETT.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

And how did you know I wasn't trying to equate two generally axiomatic statements? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh baby, equate those axioms. You know you want to. Yeah, like that...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 March 2003 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

My grandma died in December

oops (Oops), Thursday, 13 March 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

... in bed!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 13 March 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

My grandpa died in flagrante delicato.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 March 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

That's one crazy name for a drag queen. And to die inside somebody like that! Could only shatter the ego.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 March 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Or bolster it. "My bidniz is LETHAL, baby; can you handle this?"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 14 March 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Your grandpa was one active senior citizen, my friend.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 March 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)
