sufferers: christina aguilera, both minogues, madonna a few years ago, pj harvey, and some others i can't remember right now.

seriously, why do some women performers feel the need to wear as little clothing as possible? (trying to think of male equivalents and can only think of har mar superstar.) is it just because they *can*? ie; they've obviously worked so hard on their bodies either through exercise or starvation that it's like they *have* to display them - otherwise, what's the point of all that hard work?

granted, i am female - perhaps if i were a man i wouldn't feel the need to raise the question - but sometimes, the sight of these women (especially polly harvey, whom i otherwise admire) performing in their underwear or something equivalent, makes me cringe. it often comes across as so....needy.

i guess i'm interested in what other people's take on this trend amongst women performers who are actually talented / famous for something other than *just* their bodies, rather than those who actually strip / table dance or whatever for a living.

Not that I'm disagreeing with your point but what about bare chested jay-z and nas and the like.

Har mar is a great critique on this, because the looks like Danny DeVito circa taxi with a mullet. I was disappointed that he was a boxers rather than a briefs man.

yeah, but then try and think of a female equivalent of har mar (someone who doesn't conform to our contemporary standards of bodily perfection).....the only one i can think of is the singer from the gossip.

peaches?

um, i think peaches has a pretty good body...but that's beside the point. i guess i'm more interested in the "why?" of it all. i mean, if i were to appear (by way of a miracle) on totp or something in my usual, non-revealing, non-skintight, fairly androgynous clothes, i'd feel like a pretty darned unusual specimen of womanhood - in that context anyhow.

Peaches doesn't have the physique of har mar but I do think she's a different kettle of fish to the examples cited.

Jamie Liddell is an example of a man who a friend of mine fancies the pants off. Who appears on stage in a very skimpy short skirt, he's not as well known as kylie though.
