Gone to Croatia

Well actually I'm thinking of going to Croatia for my holidays - so what's it actually like? Has anyone been or should I avoid it with a bargepole? Partially the reason is its cheaper than somewhere like Italy which I cannae afford this year.

Gone to Croatan, Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I was in Split und Dubrovnik about 3 years ago. Both, in different ways, were absolutely amazing. Crotia is a must-see. I didn't find it particularly cheap, though. The ferry ride between the two cities was also beautiful. I understand there is much more besides to see. War damage had mostly been cleaned up so much as to be unnoticeable. The water was beautiful.

I used to live in Belgrade, which I guess isn't in Croatia now (it was still Yugoslavia when I lived there), but we went on a family vacation to Dubrovnik, which was fucking incredible. Walled city in a valley-esque shape, the one main street runs right down the middle and all the side streets go uphill, so if you get lost, you just need to walk downhill until you hit the main street. Very beautiful and highly recommended.

I''ve heard good things about the Croatian coast.

Croatia also has a plucky government of anti-nationalists, and therefore should be supported.

Oh, I was in Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia in fall 2000. It was all really interesting/beautiful. Dubrovnik definitely has to rank as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And Split has Diocletian's Palace which has been turned into basically the central-business-district of the town. There are now cafes and discos lining the old temple to Jupiter. The islands are also not-to-be-missed. Korcula and Bis were pretty. Also, Croatia is dirt-ass cheap. Any time you get off a ferry or bus, there are old women hounding you to stay at their B&B. Basically, you get a private room in their home, usually with a shared bath and a private balcony for like $5 per night. Zagreb was alright too - very nice gallery there but I forget the name. The food was either typical balkan food [burek, kebabs, burek, kebabs, burek, kebabs] or italian food. I didn't go to Zadar, but thats supposed to be nice too. The beaches are alright and the Adriatic is very clear and the sun shines 40 hours a day, really. But the beaches are rocky. Also, Croats are HOTT. The boys, the girls, whatever. Anyhow, if you're interested in classical-era ruins, or maybe just nice weather for cheap, go to Croatia.

Bosnia was very interesting too, if you get the chance. Sarajevo is only a few hours by bus from Dubrovnik and it passes by Mostar where the famous bridge was. Sarajevo was mostly rebuilt by the time I got there - and the old Turkish quarter is still lively and all. Good cafe culture too. There's a hostel in the old bombed-out train station. Some enterprising folks turned an abandoned sleeper-car into makeshift youth-hostel. Though the bathroom there STAAAANKS! You don't need a visa for Bosnia unless you're from somewhere like Angola or Bangladesh.

Slovenia was pretty rad too. Ljubljana is like a smaller Vienna/Prague but less crowded, and more manageable. Lake Bled was very pretty, and the caves were nice... for caves. My favorite beer in Europe is there. Zlatarov.

so, have fun!

"Croatia also has a plucky government of anti-nationalists, and therefore should be supported."

If only, sigh... our government is a bunch of spineless losers who try to please both the nationalists and anti-nationalists, and ended up doing fuck all in the process. 99% of Croatian politicians are evil vicious vermin who deserve to be shot, but anyway...

Croatia is not really that cheap (and neither is Montenegro, contrary to their marketing claims in the last few years - don't be fooled!)... maybe one could say that it's cheaper than US, but more expensive than the Czech republic or Serbia? But its coast really is pretty beautiful (being Croatian and all I'm biased, but y'know... it really is, I ain't shittin' ya!!!) - you can't go wrong with the islands, and I'll second Dubrovnik - it's probably the most expensive of all seaside places, but it's worth it. Just amazingly beautiful, and the main square is crowded even into the wee night hours (which you don't always get in the rest of seaside Croatia).

Split and Zadar are great too, and Phil's right - the girls (and boys I guess) are unbelievably hot!

PS Do you non-balkan people have burek too?

Mind Taker, Friday, 14 March 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Please don't go to former-Yugoslavia only because it's "cheap" -- go there because it has so much to offer. I enjoyed so many different aspects of it. I would love to go back again some day.

Split : amazing historical town, many old buildings, friendly people, and an amusing summer carnival ("Mad Splits") that we stumbled onto by accident. Great to watch from the rooftops if you're too shy to participate, as I was then.

Dubrovnik : beautiful, classy and serene. I felt twinges of pain whenever I heard of damage being done to the city during the conflict. (Silly aside : I had one of the best pizzas ever there!)

Sarajevo : it must look different now -- I went there in the mid eighties, before the conflict. *sigh* The thing I liked most about it was the "crossroads" aspect -- the wide variety of people and buildings in the city (my first exposure to minarets and Middle Eastern architecture). Also the history, which you feel strongly because Sarajevo has been at the center of so many huge events.

Ljubljana : still can't prounouce it correctly, but it is well worth the visit! You can walk to most places, and there is a serentiy to it that you don't find in the huge cities. It does resemble Vienna and Budapest in vibe and architecture, and the lights reflecting in the water are lovely. For just one evening, I had a view out my window of the water at night, and that view has stayed with me all these years.

one year passes...
Revive. So which of you bitches has been to Croatia? I'm thinking about going somewhere on the coast.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Like I said above, I've been to Dubrovnik, which was very very nice, but this was pre-civil war in Yugoslavia, and I don't know how bad it was hit first-hand. My sister went back a couple of years ago and said they had done a pretty good job of restoring that which had been destroyed.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The pictures that i have seen of Dubrovnik were incredible.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It was great, lots of tiny, steep streets with little restaurants. The whole place is kind of cramped and you're always walking at a 45 degree angle. No motor vehicles allowed inside the city walls. Probably the only place I went in the former Yugoslavia that I would be interested in revisiting.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

oh dear.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

What?

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been to split and dubrovnick and had a great time. I would highly recommend hitting dubrovnick, the people are very nice and the city is beautiful! plus there's nothing better than taking a ferry to an island and sunbathing on a giant slab of rock right next to the bluest and clearest water you'll ever see.

waxyjax (waxyjax), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to swim. I am half fish and miss my homeland.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I'll go to Greece or Sicily.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been to Croatia, just barely (somewhere near Pula I think, which isn't much into the Croation coast). We got there and asked the cab driver to take us to a campsite. He took us a few miles out of town to a place that was right on the beach but looked like a giant parking lot; he was gone before we could figure out what had happened but this turned out to be an "autocamp", full of germans in very fancy recreational vehicles. We paid like two bucks for a parking spot, bought tons of beer (which was about the same price as in Italy, if not more), and hijacked a boat, until some naked german guy ran out of the woods screaming at us. Lots of good swimming and hot topless german teens sunbathing. The four of us ended up sharing the one sleeping bag we had (I'm not sure what exactly we were thinking when we packed, this whole trip was done from Llubjana on a total whim)in our parking spot.

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been like three times last year! Dubrovnik is great although relatively touristy (don't worry about the war damage, it's all gone). Split is also definitely worth a visit.
The best is to go from Split to Dubrovnik by ferry. The coast scenery is amazing. Spend a few days on an island, Korcula or Cres, if you've got the time.
Zagreb is pretty cool too but not that different from any other Austro-Hungarian middle-sized city.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

PS Do you non-balkan people have burek too?

Revive as well to celebrate burek: easy to find in NYC (Queens and the Bronx), and delicious. The best I've had is at an Albanian pizzeria in Astoria, served with a pint of superb fresh yogurt.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Had an amazing fortnight in the Balkans last year. No point in going on and on about Dubrovnik or Split, both lovely, you get the idea. The islands of Hvar, Vis and particularly Korcula are beautiful. From Dubrovnik you can do day trips to Montenegro and Mostar (I think the bridge at Mostar has reopened now, but not sure).

Another place not mentioned above is Trogir. Easy to get to from Split by bus. Ferry hopping around the Dalmatian coast is terrific.

three years pass...

Revive. So I might have a job opportunity in Zagreb and I'm a bit torn. While I've been to the coast and even Zagreb several times on hols and thoroughly enjoyed it, I'm a bit sceptical about living in Zagreb, which a lot of people (foreigners) have described to me as quite boring on a daily basis. Any insight?

baaderonixx, Monday, 14 January 2008 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

My job just went to Zagreb, maybe you have been offered it?

Ed, Monday, 14 January 2008 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

Zagreb's OK, nothing too special (on the basis of the one day I spent there). I'd recommend anyone thinking of visiting the region go to Bosnia rather than Croatia, unless they're particualarly after beaches.

seventeen years pass...

staying in split old town the last few days, shoulder season- plenty buzzy and busy still

place itself great, good food hard to come by id have said, perhaps again it's the time of year but everything is just shy of "worth that price"

a full day of washout rain and thunderstorms somewhat ruined our rented car coastal journey but dobrovnik old town is absolutely stunning (how much has been built lately to the medieval style is a question but i wont spoil it by googling)

ive read that food and drink here are dublin prices so that wont be a shock at least

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Thursday, 25 September 2025 11:38 (eight months ago)

Went there before EU accession and everyone there was like “it’s good you came before we joined the EU and everything gets more expensive”
Dublin prices are a shocker though! Hope you’re having plenty of Turkish coffee

yes thats the one, in dubrovnik now alas itll have to wait

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Thursday, 25 September 2025 14:35 (eight months ago)

buza bar is a nice spot in dubrovnik for a drink. daytrip to mostar worth considering too (you stop off at the services at neum - landlocked bosnia’s only bit of coastline) as is sleepy cavtat

||||||||, Thursday, 25 September 2025 14:39 (eight months ago)

Yeah Mostar is great but depressing af would have recommended if I knew you were going, may/may not be too late to do now

Marsee playground (gyac), Thursday, 25 September 2025 14:41 (eight months ago)

If you're pressed for time and Mostar is too far you can do Trebinje which is really close to Dubrovnik, and climb up to the Hercegovačka Gračanica. The landscape around is a bit alien and the outskirts have a bit of a weird cowboy vibe but the small centre is worth it and they have a pretty snazzy bridge of their own.

If you're more time and you're driving, then Jablanica to the north, scenery gets outrageous

Kinda wish i’d gone here when i was in Croatia a couple years ago: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hum,_Istria_County

JoeStork, Thursday, 25 September 2025 17:22 (eight months ago)
