So, first leg over (just got home from Parkhead)
Who is in the semi-final?
Does anyone care but Chris, Vicky and me?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 14 March 2003 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I care a great deal. As a Celtic supporter. I phoned my friend after 2 minutes and said, "This is gonna be 5-0".

But 1-1 leaves little to be discussed. I think Celtic will probably score at Anfield. I think Celtic will play better. We'll see.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 14 March 2003 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i'll be surprised if Liverpool dont go through, and they CAN beat anyone left in this tournament

stevem (blueski), Friday, 14 March 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

hartson should have scored right at the start. it's too close to call now.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 14 March 2003 00:46 (twenty-three years ago)

hartson should have scored right at the start.

Hartson should have scored. But if he had, Larsson would not have scored. I'm interested always by commentators who say, "It could've been 3-0 by now", as if, had the first chance been taken, the other chances would also have resulted.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 14 March 2003 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Larson should have scored, horrible flick. But where was that little Mike kid? I couldn't see him hiden under Bobo's shadow. What a useless tool he was for that game.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 14 March 2003 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I was surprised to see him on the pitch. If he's not been picked for playing scottish premiership, I don't understand why he was chosen, with so little first team experience, to play liverpool.

I was glad when it was over, Celtic should have done better. But I do think that it's still even stevens, and either team could win.

Bobo was fantastic! Hartson didn't really figure in the second half, but then neither did any of the team for long stretches!

What was the atmosphere like Ailsa? On tv it was ruined by Gerry. (and obviously the last 5 mins)

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 14 March 2003 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a potty mouth last night, we were abject for the first ten minutes, but after that I was pleased-ish with Liverpool. The midfield seemed to take control and some of it was rediolent of 80's performances where we would just pass the ball around midfield for ten nminutes to try and kill the game off (although that used to be when we had a lead).

The atmosphere seemed very good (except for Marsden)

I'm not going to talk about Diouf except that he spoilt what wa sprobably his best preformance for Liverpool.

chris (chris), Friday, 14 March 2003 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm assuming someone made a racist comment to Diouf but who knows

stevem (blueski), Friday, 14 March 2003 11:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard the Celtic fans saying they were very nice to him and then he turned round and spat on them for no reason whatsoever. There were also pig fliying reports too.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 14 March 2003 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Even if they had been shouting racist abuse at him, he's a professional, paid a hell of a lot of money, and is in the public eye and a role model, and his club should be able to rely on him not to react.

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 14 March 2003 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

My flatmate came home fifteen minutes before kick-off last night and shouted at me because she'd spent 40 minutes looking for a parking space (we live 10 minutes' walk from Parkhead). She shouted at *me*! So I daredn't turn over to channel 5 and we watched Celebrity Fame Academy and Ground Force instead. Hrumph.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 14 March 2003 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm pleased to hear that it's not just irrational scouse-haters like myself that found the 'Never walk alone' love-in at the start completely nauseating.

I'd be bloody spitting if I had to listen to that.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 14 March 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Diouf was indeed impressive, but I think he's been slowly improving anyway. I was meant to go out to the pub to watch it but unforeseen circumstances prevented me so I watched at home. Celtic didn't look the fittest side in the world come the second half, I seldom watch them despite being them being my default second team by virtue of my Irishness. Hartson looked extremely out of shape. Is the SPL anywhere near the Premiership in terms of diet regimes and that sort of thing?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 14 March 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I have no idea Ronan.

James it wasn't the song, just Marsden's Scouse stereotype caricature of himself that made me want to bite a chunk out of my arm.

chris (chris), Friday, 14 March 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Fair enough Chris, but didn't you also find it a little vomit-inducing that both sets of fans were being encouraged to sing it together in a big love-in?

Which is why I was pleased to hear about normal service (of football hatred) being resumed towards the end.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 14 March 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

No I just wonder are the players in the SPL still in the old school of getting pissed all the time and eating what they like etc.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 14 March 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

The atmosphere was weird. Right at the start it was all a bit love-in with the joint You'll Never Walk Alone. When Hartson hit the bar then Larsson scored, it was a great place to be. European nights have always been 90 minute singalongs at Parkhead, but last night was actually strangely muted after Heskey equalised. The last few minutes were mental, but otherwise it was some way short of what I would have expected.

I think a lot of Celtic fans these days are so used to winning, that anything other than a barrowload of goals is a disappointment to them.

And obviously Gerry Marsden had used up the club's quota of Celtic & Liverpool connected people who weren't in commentary boxes, as Mark Owen did the half-time draw.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 14 March 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

The whole You'll Never Walk Alone thing didn't seem that vomit-inducing though...I mean both clubs sing it regularly so it was no more out of place than both clubs doing a huddle before kick-off (another shared tradition).

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 14 March 2003 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

agreed, ailsa. as for the performance, i was quite pleased. the first five minutes were like the alamo ((c) big ron) and i was genuinely worried that we were going to get a hiding but i felt that we controlled the game from then on and, if only we'd tried, could have won the game comfortably. diouf was shameful and i seriously considered whether i wanted him to play for the club again after that. i suppose he should be afforded one last chance (perhaps there were nasty things said, who knows?) but i hope he hasn't spoiled the affection and respect held between the clubs. lfc have fined him the maximum two weeks wages and will be donating it to a charity of celtic's choice so that's a good bit of p.r. and hopefully the relationship will be none the worse.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 14 March 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean both clubs sing it regularly so it was no more out of place than both clubs doing a huddle before kick-off (another shared tradition).

I was wondering the other day when it was that Celtic started doing 'the huddle'. I think it was when Wim Janson was manager - i.e. about five years ago. But it's always described as 'traditional', as if it goes back to the days of Willie McStay or something.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 14 March 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I read an interview somewhere the other day where Tony Mowbray claimed to have thought it up. I know, it's not really tradition, but it was ours before Liverpool (and recently Motherwell) nicked it.

Oh, and surely Willie Maley?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 15 March 2003 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

That's right! I was mixing up the names of Willie Maley and Jimmy McStay and came up with the current youth team coach. "And if you know the history" indeed.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 15 March 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES! YES.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Re:Fitness Regime.

Yeah, Ronan, it's pretty much the same up here in Scotland, in that it's not like 70s Drinking England. We have those dietician schmucks and the like. Hartson is a chubber but he's got some eye for goal. 23 this season, I think. Oh, sorry, 24. Liverpool a league above in the first half but Celtic stifling the second, tactics good, what a goal!

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

what Cozen said.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

dammit there were 4 English teams in Europe 2 days ago...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

That was the best Celtic performance I've seen in my lifetime in Europe. Nothing dramatic, but total control. Liverpool were nowhere. Beautiful.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Liverpool were nowhere

apart from the battering you took in the first half of course?

mind you we were embarrassing in the second half, I haven't been as upset by a Liverpool performance as I was in absolutely ages. No idea whatsoever in the second half, I mean, Smicer was having one of his better days and so they take him off? WTF???? and Putting Heskey out on the wing again was playing into the hands of the defence. Ridiculous.

chris (chris), Friday, 21 March 2003 09:09 (twenty-three years ago)

if Utd dont win the Champions League and Arsenal don't now do the double then this will be a landmark season in that not one team in the top 5 will be able to call it a successful season, with the possible exception of Newcastle perhaps, but a poor show from The Big 3 definitely

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 March 2003 09:48 (twenty-three years ago)

it was ok in the second half for about ten minutes. there absolutely must be a better reserve than traore though! I mean come on, the guy is fucking useless. Having said that noone seemed too arsed last night. I was upset with the ref for a while but in the end Liverpool were too crap to blame him.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 March 2003 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Traore is one of the worst defenders I've ever seen playing for a so-called 'top' English club. Even worse than Titus Bramble.

Man Utd vs Real Madrid in the Champions League QF... could be AMAZING.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Semi final and home leg first AGAIN...

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

and then either Juventus or Barca in the semi. If they win it they'll definitely have earned it (I hope these words don't come back to haunt me).

Whatever happened to Gregory Vignal, even he looked better than Traore, in fact he looked almost useful. Selling Steven Wright was a good idea too :o(

chris (chris), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, what are you talking about?!

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I didn't see the message about mine, sorry!

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Steven Wright had a few good games last year, the 1-0 victory against Man U in particular, he shut down Giggs every time.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Traore is hopeless. He doesn't seem to mark, then when he does get near to an opponent he dives in when he should hold them up - that's stuff you learn at school! He couldn't handle Hartson at all.

Surely Baros deserves to start - looks to have pace and gets in good positions. Heskey is a good team player, never gives up etc, but is miles away from being a good Euro-level striker, never mind international class.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Not only that but he NEVER passes it forward or takes any initiative or responsibility for it. Liverpool at their worst these days remind me of the Souness era, tapping the ball around and absolutely everyone too scared to risk losing it by actually taking it on and doing something with it.

Yeah Baros has always done well, he makes chances for himself and has scored a decent amount given how few games he's got.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 March 2003 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i missed this game, but i was surprised by the result...things will get better for 'pool, as they will get the last champions league spot, and baros and diouf will go stellar next season (esp diouf)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

that Champions League draw was inevitable - if Man Utd can get past 2 Spanish clubs (Barca sure to beat Juve) and then probably face a third (i tip Valencia to make it) it will be a miracle...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

man u will go out to real. but are barca sure to beat juve?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

man u will go out to real

I wouldn't be so sure about that. They may have added Ronaldo, but they're actually a worse team than last year. And for what it's worth, I think Juve will beat Barca.

if Man Utd can get past 2 Spanish clubs (Barca sure to beat Juve) and then probably face a third (i tip Valencia to make it) it will be a miracle

We don't have that bad a record against Spanish clubs, either. Best performances of last season were against Deportivo, we've done OK against Valencia recently, and haven't lost to Barcelona since the days of Romario and Stoichkov.

Rash prediction time - United will get past Madrid.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i think its much more likely Man Utd will beat Real Madrid then Juventus will beat Barcelona

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

could go to penalties...!

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

real will come into their stride in the later knock-out rounds, and even if they're worse than last year, they should still be too strong. fingers crossed, all the same. juve and barca is a close call...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Barca (Eurpean remix) could well beat Juve. They seem to be a completely different team to their league selves, inexplicable stuff. I'd love to see them get revenge over Real in the semis after last year when they went out quite limply.

An all Milan semi will be dull, but interesting, in a chess match sort of way. (I'll be happy to see myself wrong here)

chris (chris), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

prediction time:

real go through by a 2 goal margin.
liverpool get into champs league
barca squeak through by a 1 goal margin

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

ahhh, dream scenario.

Then Liverpool pinch Davids and Nedved off Juventus, yes?

chris (chris), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

what about: celtic to win uefa cup?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

liverpool get into champs league

This is all too horribly plausible now, especially after Everton's miserable failure to finish off Boro or West Ham in recent weeks. Five of EFC's last eight are against the rest of the top six, and if we can't win the easy ones... Oh well, three months ahead of the RedScum was pretty good going - I suppose it'll end this weekend.

They'll have a harder time overhauling Chelsea though.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Liverpool to finish 5th, they don't DESERVE a Champions League place next season. i was hoping they would win the UEFA Cup - I think whoever wins that should get a Champions League place if they don't already

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 March 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I notice that Liverpool play Chelsea on the last day of the season - that could be a huge game.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 22 March 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I notice that Liverpool play Chelsea on the last day of the season - that could be a huge game.

And Everton play Man U at Goodison. I think, in return for preventing Siralex claiming another title, Houll should try his best to roll Chelsea over and gift EFC a Champions' League place. Oh, I can dream.

What is the situation with UEFA Cup spots, btw? Is it just three: 5th place, Worthington winners and FA Cup winners? And if the Worthington winners are in the top five, it goes down another Premiership place, whilst if the FA Cup winners are similarly assured of another European route, it goes to the Cup runners-up? Everton, Liverpool and Southampton, then.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 22 March 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

England get at least 4 UEFA Cup places as i understand it - 5 if a team wins a Fair Play award (as Ipswich did last season) and up to 8 if 3 teams compete in the Intertoto Cup - tho this Summer no English clubs have opted to do this. so i think Liverpool and Everton will be in next season, but Liverpool also won the League Cup so whoever finishes 7th should also qualify (Blackburn, Southampton, Charlton or Spurs) - and if the FA Cup is won by either Arsenal or Chelsea or Southampton if they finish in the top 7 then whoever finished 8th in the Premiership could also be in the UEFA Cup next season!

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 March 2003 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Celtic didn't have to do anything very special there (Hartson's goal excepted). I thought Liverpool would step up a few gears at Anfield, instead they became more flaccid and ineffectual.

For Rangers: The cup win was nice, but to be honest I think I'd almost rather they'd won the league encounter.

Ally C (Ally C), Sunday, 23 March 2003 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

What are the qualification requirements for the Intertoto cup? And why does it exist in the first place?

RickyT (RickyT), Sunday, 23 March 2003 01:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Goodness only knows.

Ally C (Ally C), Sunday, 23 March 2003 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

The Intertoto was created to give something for the European pools companies during the close season. The UEFA Cup qualification was intended as an incentive for teams to enter it. I think there are no qualification rules (maybe top division teams only? Not sure), but if more than the three British teams permitted were to apply, the highest finishers get the places.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 March 2003 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Leeds have turned it down already

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 23 March 2003 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Celtic didn't have to do anything very special there

Right.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 23 March 2003 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose it'll end this weekend.

And it did. Didn't see either game (just bursts of R5), but Liverpool's victory sounded a stroll, Everton outclassed for half an hour but thereafter rather unlucky to lose. Some kind of foul leading up to the Arsenal winner?

*Huge drawn-out sigh*

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 23 March 2003 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Yikes, out of Scottish Cup again to Caley Thistle. Maybe the UEFA Cup run is taking its toll. Bring on the "Super Caley go ballistic, Celtic are atrocious" headlines...

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 23 March 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

eek - cross post with other headlines thread

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 23 March 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

And that one was made without even knowing about today's game... :-O

OleM (OleM), Sunday, 23 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Spooky! This of course proves that Caledonian Thistle are better than Liverpool.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 March 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Or that Celtic officially have a bogey team now (OK, we knocked them out of the CIS Cup, but it wasn't easy).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 23 March 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

did villa not apply for the intertoto?
also i think celtic can win the uefa cup, lazio probably won't be arsed
if theyre still in with a shot for the league

robin (robin), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Villa seem to be Intertoto regulars. I didn't know all you had to do is turn up though. Barcelona are now in the Intertoto zone after thrashing Racing Santander and their bizarre millionaire president/coach/photographer.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 24 March 2003 09:19 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
Two years on it's painfully clear who were the long term winners of this FITE.

there absolutely must be a better reserve than traore though! I mean come on, the guy is fucking useless.
and
Traore is one of the worst defenders I've ever seen playing for a so-called 'top' English club

To think he is now a Champions League winner (in spite of playing "Opposites" with the Liverpool offside trap for the entire match).

This bit seems to have been posted early :-P
Liverpool to finish 5th, they don't DESERVE a Champions League place next season

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Onimo, you missed this...

Whatever happened to Gregory Vignal, even he looked better than Traore, in fact he looked almost useful

Oh, he's charming the locals up here now with his silky skills, dodgy tackling and by pushing over ball boys. And he doesn't really look that useful, unless you compare him to the other Liverpool reject currently sitting about doing nothing plying his trade in the SPL, Stephane Henchoz.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna miss Bobo.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

...like a hole in the defence head :)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of Liverpool-Celtic matches of the past - seeing Sheff Weds get promoted made me wonder about Simon Donnelly (and from thence to Phil O'Donnell). When they played in the UEFA cup and Donnelly scored, he was touted as the new great hope for Scottish football. Did he jump ship and miss out on being managed by MON who could have given him a platform, or were his advance notices more indicative of the relative desperation for Celtic to have a homegrown star who could match it with the best?

In other words, did he contemplate the weekend's football in Glasgow and Cardiff from behind a depressive alcoholic fog, where he pondered the choices he made and the consequences thereof, telling everyone that he could have been a contender?

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

new great hope for Scottish football
See also Mark Burchill and Shaun Maloney. These days people are looking more towards Hibernian for Scotland's next failed forward line.

In the last year Phil O'Donnell has played twice as many games as he did in his 5 years at Wednesday.

I remember them both leaving full of dreams about the fame and fortune of the Premiership and being seen on TV every week on the same programme as that silly tango man. They went about 10 games without a win, including an 8-0 hammering from Newcastle. I think Donnelly got a goal after about half a season then phoned in sick for 3 years.
