(The Abominable) Dr. Phibes: C or D?

I was thinking this could have been a Kubrick film...the symmetrical composition of Phibes' grand room, the "Clockwork" big band and corny numbers, the baroque organ music, the grotesque frog mask, etc. Vulnavia the mute assistant = hottie.

Do a Google image search. Incredible!
Classic. Have to see it again, it's been awhile.

Oh so classic.

I had a really big thing for Vincent Price movies when I was five.

I love Vincent Price. I think it's sad he didn't retire a bit sooner, but there are so many instances of his giving some quality to movies that would otherwise have been wretched. He had real class.

Neither of the Phibes films are a patch on 'Theatre of Blood'.

Now I'm getting reminded of Robert Morley again. Amazingly, my mother made a reference to that scene a couple of weeks ago, for reasons I forget (or blank out).

"ooooh, my babies!!"

Vulnavia is played by a different actress in each of the Dr. Phibes films. AND strangely Price pronounces the name different in each film. In one it's vulNAHvia and the other it's vulNAYvia.

There's one scene in particular (from the first movie): she's cleaning up while the Clockworks band plays "One for My Baby and One for the Road." Casually, she walks over and sits on the ledge near the mechanical piano player, in that outfit with the Russian hat and gloves, and attentively lights her cigarette, not saying a word...just a simply marvelous touch.

Price was a so-called Anglophile. I guess he was torn between US and UK pronunciations. :)

Classic all the way! Vincent Price is so cool and his female assistants are always supersexy. Gaudy, psychedelic, creepy, sophisticated, darkly humorous and nothing less than brilliant.
