ive always thot patty hearst was playing soilder, bored of life as one of the elite, chose to run away and join the radicals, when caught played the poor bambi kidnapped and brain washed.

thinking about smart, i have this feeling that the 15 yr old was bored of her perfect morg family, and so ran away- i am not convinced she was kidnapped, and she was so close to home, and could use the phone at will, and was left alone often, she could have escaped.

stockholm syndrome ?
more exciting t hen home ?

hearst is speaking in favour of smart.

I was wondering that too. Not having heard anything about the case untill see turned up I was wondering why no one had suggested that she'd run off with this 'prophet'.

I think that's the view that most people will have, because the alternative (Stockholm syndrome, etc.) are so difficult to comprehend. I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt though. If a 15-year-old girl was going to run off with someone, this Emmanuel guy seems like a pretty unlikely choice.

Do we know that Elizabeth Smart was left alone often and could use the phone often? I haven't heard much about what life was like for her during those nine months, just the places they traveled to. I think Hearst was definitely kidnapped--didn't her boyfriend Steven Weed (always loved that name) witness the kidnapping? But maybe she felt guilty about her wealth, her family's power--especially given the time and place--and was more susceptible to brainwashing than most.

It'll be interesting to see what Elizabeth has to say about her experience. If I was a bored teenager who wanted to run away from an uptight religious background, I'd don't think I'd choose an unattractive religious cult leader as my magic man, mama. [Oh, Nick A. has just said the same thing!] Who knows, though?

thirteen years pass...

Didn't know until tonight that Jeffrey Toobin has a book out on Hearst:

http://www.thestar.com/content/dam/thestar/entertainment/books/2016/08/07/jeffrey-toobin-dissects-patty-hearsts-crime-of-the-century-in-new-book/american-heiress.jpg.size.custom.crop.428x650.jpg

I've read and seen lots on Hearst already, but I thought the other four Toobin books I read were good-to-excellent, so I'll get this one too.
