Well does it?

I am unsure, but having faced this dilemma previously, I'd advise you to pass if you can.

JS Williams (js williams), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The hazelnut oil in it will eventually go rancid, but you'd know it at the first taste, and it wouldn't make you sick or anything. It'd just taste awful.

Nutella lasts longer than straight-up hazelnut oil, though ... I've got some here that's a year old, and just tried it and it's fine :)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Who lets it sit long enough to where it could get that old?

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Bryan is OTM, I practically eat that stuff with a spoon out of the jar.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I ODed on all things hazelnut in Mass (Ally, it was you who knew the Amherst area, wasn't it?) -- where bookstores sold coffee in "Decaf" and "hazelnut." These days I use Nutella for strawberries, poundcake, and that's it.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I am off to buy some now for my fusion food baking experiment.

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Amherst is like the epicentre of all things unholy and wrong in the United States.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Nutella in coffee is just wrong. It leaves a weird sludgey film on the cup. I thought it would be the best thing ever but I was sadly mistaken.

How *can* you have the stuff lying around long enough to go off? I, too, would like to know how to accomplish such an impossibility.

kate (suzy), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

IN THE COFFEE??? That's like slopping some peanut butter in there though.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We had one sitting around here for more than a year, and I looked it up somewhere - you should definitely throw it out if it's more than a year old.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha I actually have no Nutella lying around. I was just curious how long it would take to go bad IF I did!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Amherst had (has still?) good things about it: Atkins, Bart's, and ... well, I was trying to think of something that started with C so I could say "but the rest of the alphabet was shit," but I failed.

The hazelnut coffee obsession was just flat-out wrong, any way you slice it.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

How to get fat really quickly (from personal experience):
1. take social tea biscuit out of package
2. slather with Nutella
3. shove the entire thing in your gob at once
4. repeat

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

highly processed foods like that take ages to go off b/c of the preservatives. I estimate it would take three to four years for nutella to go off.

rainy (rainy), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Goddamn, maybe hazelnuts are secretly hippie food?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't be. I've never once seen them paired with carob.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Everybody in the bank line knows. I've got a crush on the nutella.

I wish I was drunk.

Well damn.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread makes me happy. It also makes me fear for the mega-old jar of Nutella we have in the cabinet.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone eats the stuff out of the jar...

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 15 March 2003 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 15 March 2003 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe it hardens.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 March 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

frangelico mixed with coffee is really good!!

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 15 March 2003 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never put nutella on anything; I always eat it straight out of the jar. It's a time-management thing....

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 15 March 2003 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

If it hardens, you're definitely not having enough sex. If, however, it's abraded, you may be having too much. Sex. With Nutella. Which is somehow reminiscent of the chicken-sex scene in 'Pink Flamingos.' But then what isn't?

Skottie, Saturday, 15 March 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

mix it with marmite and it lasts forever

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 15 March 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I just checked to see if the age old Nutella in my pantry has gone bad. Judging by its viscosity and strangely oily taste, I'm assuming it has.

I had two spoonfuls anyway. Possibly I need to meet a girl.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 15 March 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

In Gor all the streets are paved with Marmite; it's fucking indestructible stuff.

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 15 March 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark S must lead an interplanetary expedition!
