Tell me about men's shoes.

My 6 year old Doc Martens finally bit the dust and now expertly guide rivers of fresh spring melt-water directly to my socks. I need new footwear. I don't know if I want boots or shoes (although I tend to walk funny if I don't wear something heavy for some reason) or what, but I think I want to try something a bit less bland than my old Docs. Any suggestions? Also: brands are good to mention, but if you could specify a particular, uh, "model" of shoe that you like, that would be really great, 'cause I've noticed that every single company will have different lines of shoes; like really cheap ugly ones (like the Nikes you find at JC Penny's, you know what I'm talking about) and the better-looking ones that are also a bit more difficult to find. I was thinking I like the looks of the Pumas in those fake ads (the ones that weren't the ones with the weird wonky-looking tongues), but I don't know.

I'm enjoying a pair of Tevas these days. Between them and some boots from LL Bean and some Docs loafers I've got more or less all my bases covered. If all else fails you can always hit www.customatix.com and design yr own.

I must know what brand of shoe this one on the far right is! it is the elusive perfect dream shoe!

I mean, what kind of sadistic website gives you a look at the best shoe ever and then doesn't tell you what it is?

Dan I., Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it looks like a diesel sneaker

boxcubed (boxcubed), Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I know! But it's not. It's more understated than a Diesel.

Once my brother and I were out exploring this broken down boatyard stuck right in the middle of nowhere north of Duluth along the western shore of lake Superior, when we came across this building which had been completely burned down, nothing left except piles of black cinders and ash and one lone shard of wood jutting out of it all about 6 feet into the air. Tied right to the top of that splintered board, hanging by their laces were the most perfect pair of ancient shoes, just like in the picture above. Judging from the style they were about 20 years old. They were in incredibly good condition for how long they must have been hanging there, but they were just a little too nasty to salvage. Besides, I thought they might be cursed given their context. I seem to remember the brand being "All Pro", but now I can't find any All Pro shoes like that no matter how I search.

Dan I, Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah gabbneb I agree that the shoe looks a lot like that Diesel, but don't you think Diesels look a bit, um, "ducky"? They curve up in the fronts too much for my taste (or at least are subtly shaped so as to give the impression of curving up like that). I wonder why they do that?

Dan I., Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck it, obsessing over shoes like this is getting me a bit too in touch with my feminine side. I think I'll buy me another pair of Docs. (goodbye my sweet beautiful Perfect Dream Shoe! I will always remember you!)

Dan I., Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:32 (twenty-three years ago)

get some campers

ron (ron), Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Campers do look nice but Docs are classic.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 15 March 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The sort I buy are the ones that cost less than £10. That's my style.

ron (ron), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a navy pair of those with the yellow N, they no longer fit me though.

Continuing - as if it needed to be stated - my Morley idolotry: on a recent 'Late Review' he said he had made it his life's work to find a male equivalent to the Manolo Blahnik shoe. I feel his pain. For those of us unenamoured with the sports shoe - and the sensible shoe's attempt to ape it - where does one go for the stylish gentleman's footwear? (Suzy and Anna: I'm looking at you here)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

OH MY GOD why can't we buy these???????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we put the ILX logo on them?

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 16 March 2003 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a great fan of Camper shoes. Very comfortable and well made but they suffer from the fact that they can't be resoled. I get through about 2 pairs a year wearing a pair every day till they wear out.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 16 March 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Gravis shoes are extremely comfortable if you don't have too big of feet, I recommend the Circuit trainer.

webcrack (music=crack), Sunday, 16 March 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

campers - you can't beat them for boys or girls ('cept some of the more dainty girls ones suck), even though they are no longer cool. have just bought a v. nice pair of puma boots not unlike a pair of campers i own - actually they look llike my camper boots have been mating with my old ('95) puma boots, which still get kicked around in the bottom of my closet.

but i dunno - bit of a fashion arc from doc boot to camper - a journey i wouldn't want to make.

other fluevogs (I'm a big fan of the older Fluevog style shoes)
The puma anjan with the mesh is pretty nice right now. Lightweight mesh, comes in lots of colors. The Puma tahara is also nice. You can't go wrong with addidas shell toe shoes though.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm really an advocate of boys with nice shoes.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Do not by any counts buy Teva's. I say go for Kenneth Cole boots.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

saw it in person in Berkeley, it's not as dramatic as it looks in the pic.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

H.H. Brown!

Seriously I've owned a pair of H.H. Brown boots since high school, and I'm 31! THese things are seriously indestructable, and very comfortable. Plus the company is owned by Warren Buffett.

deej, Sunday, 1 July 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

Is "hardasfuck" good or do you mean they hurt your feet? I'm still trying to find the right pair of running shoes.

dean ge, Sunday, 1 July 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

hah i meant badass, yeah

there's a running store place i go to that helps you w/ what kind of shoe and what fit you need, based on where you put the stress on your foot etc
