On the summer night he died, his doctor sent for a bottle of champagne and a glass as a customary last rite."He picked up the glass," Chekhov's wife recounted, "turned to me, smiled his wonderful smile and said, 'It's been such a long time since I've had champagne.'" He drained the full glass, sank back onto the bed, and was still.
