about the same time and place, radically changed drama, who was better ?

Chekhov, by a very long way. I read several Ibsen plays years ago, and decided I really disliked him. Unfortunately for the good of this thread, I can't remember why, except there was an ideological and stylistic component. Chekhov I think is one of the greats, though I love his stories more than his plays - I think he's one of the five best short story writers ever.

I wonder what ideological objection Martin had to Ibsen. He's such a progressive pussy cat!

I don't really understand Chekhov so I assume he is better.

''I don't really understand Chekhov so I assume he is better.''

that really made things clear. thanx.

Ibsen was certainly considered progressive, but what that amounted to 100 years ago may not be progressive now. But as I said, I can't really remember what my problem was. I did write about it somewhere, which I might try to dig out.

ibsen is a bit more straightforward than chekov maybe as someone seemed to say above. Obviously a lot different, but I also think of Strindberg when I think of Ibsen and Chekhov, probably because they are all often covered in the same class on modern (european) drama.

Strindberg is the evil Ibsen.

eleven years pass...

bittersweet anecdote about his final moments at the TB sanitorium

On the summer night he died, his doctor sent for a bottle of champagne and a glass as a customary last rite."He picked up the glass," Chekhov's wife recounted, "turned to me, smiled his wonderful smile and said, 'It's been such a long time since I've had champagne.'" He drained the full glass, sank back onto the bed, and was still.
