Do you ever get jealous of friends?

I am right now. Two of my close friends are making me upset. One just bought a brand new Volvo. Of course his father paid for most of it...the kid is 29 yrs old and relies on his father to buy him things. But it makes me mad, I work my ass off, pay all my own bills, buy my own car and what not and he gets things handed to him. So, I'm jealous.

Friend 2 is a bit more blunt about his fun things. "Hey I bought a new car too, sucks you can't afford one huh?" So today I get an email "Booked a cruise for May 11th, you guys are welcome to come." My response was "Yeah let me cut you a check." He knows damn well we can't afford to do these things and yet I feel like he rubs it in most of the time. Sometimes I don't like my friends.

But, I'm just a jealous ass.

I'm going to make one of those websites. www.sendchrisonvacation.com

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

You mean envious!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't been jealous of my friends in a while. Actually back in September one of my best friends was very kissy kissy with this girl whom I instantly fancied, but it turned out he wasn't too interested so it all worked out well for me, apart from a long saga afterwards. I guess in a broad sense I sometimes am jealous of my friends because almost every single one of them has a relationship which has been going on for 2 years or so. I mean I still feel more 19 than 20 so this is kinda mental to me.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah envious and jealous I guess. I mean not thats it much, but at least I feel I've accomplished something when I pay my bills or my mortgage. Granted I ain't got shit left for money when everythings paid, but I've paid them....my parents haven't for me at almost 30 years old.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Sounds like you are in competition rather than friendship!

S Samson, Monday, 17 March 2003 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm jealous of my brother. He and his wife (yeah - he's married, I'm not - another point of contention) just bought their first house, and even better, live in a city where they can afford one. They get to go skiing all the time. And they're happy.

Meanwhile, I will never be able to afford to buy anything.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Friend 2 is in constant competition with me. I buy a condo, he has to one up with a bigger one. I buy a car, he has to buy a better one. I don't compete with either of them (unless its sporting) because I can't keep up financially. Thats ok, i take out my aggression on them when we play hockey. Its not fun being a 5'8, 165lb. skinny turd when a 6'0, 220lb dude hits you.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Competition never bothers me. If there is an undercurrent of friendship there then it does. Just come out and say what you are feeling. Otherwise you will end up hating more than anything (hating the envy, hating your friend, etc.)

S Samson, Monday, 17 March 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Or better yet you could ask yourself why you are feeling envy and work on some unresolved issues that you may have.

S Samson, Monday, 17 March 2003 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

(ie, get that stripper job)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Samson, what the fuck? Are you a Marine or something?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, it's one thing to have good fortune, but it's quite another to rub it in the face of the people you call your friends. Chris, I think friend 2 sounds like an asshat of the highest order.

With me, I've never ever had money to do the things I wanted to do like travel and it seems like I never will. But I am mostly happy for my friends instead of envious, that way I can at least get some vicarious thrills when I hear their stories.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Friend 1, isn't so bad...I mean he did lend me $4000 for my condo, but I hate that he still takes handouts at 29. Besides, he doesn't brag or anything like that. So he's not bad. Friend 2, just gets under my skin. "How come you never have any money?" Is his favorite question to me usually followed up with a "We have $5000 in the bank and we're going here or we bought this." My wife and I end up paying taxes this year and friend 2 and his wife end up getting a return, its not fair. Your right Nicole I don't mind that they are doing well, but its the rubbing in my face that pisses me off.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

nicole = otm

i second the friend 2 as asshat theorem

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a bit shitty, I guess I fit the friend 1 and 2 profile myself in that my parents really look after me, but I would hate to point it out to my friends cos I am already conscious that they know and actually consider it a point of info as is. There's no excuse for it being rubbed in your face, I mean I'm 19 and I would feel like a twat doing that in the first place.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I should start calling him that "Hey Asshat, how was the cruise? Hey asshat hows the new Volkswagen?"

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah but Ronan your still pretty young so having your parents look after you is still ok. When your pushing 30 and Dad's still paying your bills, then we got a problem.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course this is coming from someone who's been on his own since 18.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I guess what I mean though is that when the guy can't see that that's not something to brag about it's a bit lame.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

stick a go-faster stripe on your car and instantly your car is now better than theirs.

Why would you be jealous of a guy with a Volvo anyway?!?!?!?!?!?!!!??!?!!!?!?!?!?!?!

ken c, Monday, 17 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm jealous/envious also of my friends being in working relationships with wonderful people. It's weird to be the only guy in the band without a wife or g-friend to call and prattle on exitedly to about whatever stupid thing we're doing.

I remember being jealous with my last g-friend a lot because she was really keen on being with a large assortment of men pretty often, and she thought introducing me to the guy(s) she was cheating on me with was a good idea; she thought we'd hit it off and get along like old chums, when in reality she'd be hanging all over & kissing on them etc. whilst smiling at me like it was some oh-so-entertaining game. That wasn't even jealousy I guess, so much as frustration.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm jealous of a Volvo because it was free and its a lot cooler than my Nissan Sentra.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

ugh, nick, that sounds awful.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The closest I've gotten to jealousy is of my sister! She is heavily involved in politics in Washington. My argument is that she would not have gotten where she is unless my parents did not support her schooling until she was thirty!

S Samson, Monday, 17 March 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Nick, thats some bullshit right there.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey wait a second that happened to me in college. Same thing...except I'd see her at a party smoochin up on these dudes.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

do a rain dance, and maybe it'll hurricane during his cruise.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

It wouldn't have been a big deal had we maintained a, y'know, looser, "dating" kinda situation. But she kept saying stuff like "I could marry you and live with you forever" and "you're totally my soul-mate" and even living at my crib for awhile and crap like that. And I totally fell for it.

Honestly, she didn't mean any specific harm or anything, that was just the way she was, and once we broke up and became friends again, I could see it as the k-entertaining personality quirk it was rather than the "she's-evil-and-out-to-get-me" phenom I took it for.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm jealous of any Volvo owner, btw. Them thar's one of my favorite kinda cars.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick did you date the same girl I did. Sounds just like the douche bag.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

The 2 guys in my band both make over $10k than I do and neither of them went to college, but I don't envy their lives at all.

Hmm... I prefer to be envious of strangers. Remember that thread about quitting work and having fun that I totally killed with rage? Yeah.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't imagine any of my friends acting like your friend #2, Chris. I mean, one couple are wealthy - he earns like £100k a year or something, and I doubt that she is so far beyond. Huge house, new car, expensive holidays, the lot. But neither would ever dream of rubbing it in our faces in any way - the difference it makes in our interactions is that they are consistently more generous in presents and hosting parties and stuff. I can't imagining wanting to stay friends with someone who acted like your second friend. #1 sounds okay, maybe a bit lame, but he doesn't sound as if he's wanting to make you feel bad about anything.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 17 March 2003 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I think nick's ex sounds fun.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 17 March 2003 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I think nick's ex sounds fun.

She is definitely a fun person, you just cannot take a single thing she says seriously, nor can you trust her for or with anything. But fun, hell yeah.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm envious of Chris V's photoshop skills, btw.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hey could you hold onto this hairbrush for a second?"
"Sure, no problem."
"Thanks- HEY THAT'S NOT RIGHT!"
"Oh, you love it."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 March 2003 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i am jealous that my single friends get way more sex than i do.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 17 March 2003 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Only when they are more successful, attractive, or well-dressed than I am.
