every person I've talked about music with at a party, it's like you're both standing there playing with this massive plastic kids playset, and you've got the triangular piece and you're both trying to ram the fucker into the circular hole, ie you're both pissed and never going to agree anyway. The discussions are always plagued by someone assuming the path they took to liking what they like will be the same for you, like "i was like that but you won't be soon".

And the worst part is now that I tend to shut off this crap before it gets anyway big by saying "sorry I'm not discussing this, I disagree and that's it", and when I do this people say I'm being "snappy". But really I'm stopping a stupid drunken conversation. Maybe it is snappy. I like saying that though cos it keeps your cards at your chest.

I am probably alone in all this but I think those arguments are great as long as not nasty and as long as they dont happen too often. The one between Emma and Pete about unions on holiday last year was epical.

Last Wednesday a fireman in a bar yelled at me incessantly, drunkenly for saying that I didn't support the war in Iraq. Of course, I didn't volunteer this opinion without him asking me first, so I'm not really sure why it was that big a deal. Whenever I made a point explaning my reasoning ("well I think we should finish the job in Afghanistan," "well I think we should capture bin Laden before anything else," etc.), he would butt in with some pointless, illogical crap "SO! You support Saddam!" Uh, no buddy, I don't.

What a true American hero. At least his other fireman buddy was funny.

I think my problem is I hate myself. Well not really but I don't like being predictable as the guy who argues all the time, I don't like being trapped into doing something by virtue of what I believe, if I don't want to argue I'm not going to, I think it irks people alot if you do have a different position but won't give them their pound of flesh, but at the same time I think I enjoy parties much more and get more out of bluntly disagreeing with the person than bothering to trash it out, at the end of those arguments you look a prick anyway and are usually even more weary and have wasted time.

the Saddam ref is perfect because as Ronan mentions the problem is usually in the trollee, not the troller - there is always SOMETHING that's going to push your buttons and the real test is how you react to it, not with what gusto and bravado you go after the arguments of a person who probably doesn't give a rat's ass in the first place but is just trying to rattle your cage.

Real-life trolling = used to happen to me often with the son of Robert Lowell, who appears to mostly hang out in bars and try to argue with people about socialism (he once called me a racist for saying that, while I admired a lot of Scandinavian social-democrat type governments, they did seem to be having a little trouble adjusting to immigration)
