This is the thread where we praise the classic nature of The Smothers Brothers

Just saw them on the Kimmel Show, still absolute class. They gave him a bottle of wine (which was promptely openned) and Tommy later ran over to congratulate the 400 pound yoyo master that was grebt. Plus they ignored Fred Durst, the weekly cohost.
They were funny once, but they are still brilliant.

I watched the Kimmel Show too! First time I've ever watched it!

It's not bad, I like his approach. It's like your good buddy at the bar gets to host his show or something. It lags sometimes, but that vibe overcomes the slow parts.

He himself is great. Fred Durst wasn't carrying his weight. Snoop Dogg or Jamie Garsomthingorother on the other hand were a perfect cohosts.

five years pass...

The third and final season is new on DVD, seems like a must-get for fans of TV satire (RIP):

eight months pass...

They put some Smothers Brothers stuff on DVD, finally – starting w/season three, the strategy being (I think) that this was their more political/zeitgeisty stuff that's become their legacy. Thankfully, they did NOT achieve Lenny Bruce-levels of railing against their censors at CBS.

They're a really great comedy AND singing duo, and v entertaining! Usual variety show problem of dedicating too much time to sometimes boring guest stars (like the freaking Broadway cast of HAIR). OTOH it's crazy & fun to see people like Steve Martin just staring out, or a young & completely square-looking, clean-shaven, suit-wearing George Carlin. They did some really good comedy about issues like poverty & racism, not only exploring it in a way that's far less superficial than a lot of things I've seen, plus managing to be FUNNY at the same time.

my mom in particular LOVED their shit. We had at least four or five of their albums around the house growing up, and I got really into them around the age of 8 or 9.

"Mom always liked you best!"

lolz

Is Paul Paulsen on the albums?

chillbigail ate a chill banana (Abbott), Friday, 7 August 2009 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

You mean Pat Paulsen, Abbott?

boring guest stars (like the freaking Broadway cast of HAIR).

What's the problem with that?

I do mean Pat Paulsen. ;_;

The problem was HAIR took up 25% of the show. Different strokes, you know. I still watched it.

I remember enjoying the show when I was a kid. Of course I probably only understood some small fraction of what was going on. One day I would like to see the Burl Ives sketch I read about in the Harlan Ellison TV book.

New rejected screenname: Phat Paulsen.

I remember liking when they introduced the guest stars and Dick would try to give them a good serious intro and Tommy would play dumb and bust his chops and mess everything up.
