Coworkers unable to recognize the natural instability of Windows

You've worked on these systems for years. Why does Windows going nuts and requiring a reboot surprise you and require me to come see.

I hate you.

...and I'm still trying to figure out when being able to open up a case and clean out dust became the mark of a expert user. Gah.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I finally got sick of helping people the other day when a former co-worker wanted me to install a new CDROM drive for her. I told her to go to the store, buy one, open up her case, take out the old one and plug the new one in the same way as the old one. It worked fine and she was amazed! FUCK! It's like opening a computer case is going to release demons or something. 99 out of 100 Windows problems can be solved with a reboot. People who fuck around trying to fix things when a reboot would suffice are the bane of my existence.

There's some dust on my keyboard. Can one of you guys come out and clean it for me - I think it's upsetting the operation?

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Me to, however;

Peoples TVs, Fridges, Radios, CD Players, DVD Players etc etc don't need rebooting so they don't see why their PCs do.

frustration hath no hilariousness like an i.t. expert scorned

I asked a woman where her base unit was and she told me that she didn't have one. I pondered and asked her if there was anything under her desk and she answered that she had this big black foot rest. Tra la - how do these people drive cars and feed themselves?!

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

base unit? base unit? What the hell is a base unit? Maybe if you IT types spoke plain English rather than making up some secret code then the rest of us might even stand a fighting chance of understanding you.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I know some stuff and I was wondering that myself...

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I AM NOT AN IT TYPE!

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend thought when he moved and unplugged his pc all his emails and mp3's would be gone. I smacked him upside the head.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Whenever I ask a woman where her base unit is I get slapped.

Prude (Prude), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

ALL YOUR BASE UNIT BELONGS TO US

The IT Department, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I AM NOT AN IT TYPE!

but you're certainly a bold type.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Zing!

Prude (Prude), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I like French and Stained Glass windows best. Can anyone link that one of the priest?

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

XP, 95, ME...they are all worthless

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Snnooorrrrrr

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

No, they are quite expensive.

Wintermute (Wintermute), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Windows is completely fucking worthless.
All computers and operating systems are completely worthless, John, because they all cause us to end up troubleshooting problem when we could all be spending our time outside in the sun, playing a guitar or reading a book or something far more fun than computers. Computers are the worst thing ever. God how I love them.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

*MY* computer never crashes without me doing Something Bad (tm).

I find it hard to sympathise with someone who seems to make considerable efforts to screw up other people's machines, Jon. Also, and I'm not particularly talking about you as I don't know you professionally at all, but I'm thoroughly sick of IT people who act as if someone is an arsehole or retarded if they don't know their computer's clock speed or wouldn't dream of taking it apart. It's the job of these people to support users, and they'd get pissed off quickly enough if a car mechanic treated them like shit because they don't fit their own spark plugs.

No, I'm not one of the users who gets treated like that: I have a first in Computer Science, and work as a systems analyst and programmer.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Boo hoo, you dislike me.

I am not IT. It isn't my job to support these people. Is it unreasonable to expect them to make even a little effort to solve their problem? Non of these people are inexperienced. After using Windows 98 for a few years, don't you think that it should be obvious that a reboot can usually fix most problems with the OS?

HUGS!
