Los Angeles FAP, Sunday March 30th!

Okay, as I invoked the FAP on the other thread -- a lot of folks have planned for this already, but the Sunday after next is going to be our first proper LA FAP, or so I hope. ;-)

We would have tried for Friday and Saturday so things could stagger on into the night and all, but scheduling forbids. Board semi-regular Nick Graham is coming out to California for her first visit in a few years, to see Stripey, Chris Barrus, myself and others in the area, and a number of days she's here are booked already, so that leaves that Sunday in particular as the one to aim for. The plan is to go to LACMA first -- Stripey suggested a recent exhibit of Mongolian art she wants to catch -- then maybe a dip into Amoeba if pocketbooks can stand it, then the proper FAP itself (all events optional! if you just want to go for the food and drink, that's more than cool). Both Spencer and Luna suggested El Coyote, but Chris insists on Cafe Atlantico, which is this apparently kick butt Spanish tapas spot in Pasadena, I gather. Chris has provided a menu and I have to say it does look incredibly good, so personally I'd vote for that (assuming it's open on Sundays?).

Plan would be for FAP fun itself in the late afternoon/early evening, to allow everyone to get home in one piece for work and all. Post comments, suggestions, confirmations here, and let's hammer down the details as to where!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 03:25 (twenty-three years ago)

PASADENA IS FAR AWAY AND SUCKS BUT THE PLACE SOUNDS GOOD

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 05:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Fear not, Chaki, doubtless somebody will ferry you there and back in the name of FAP!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:33 (twenty-three years ago)

who's offering?

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:45 (twenty-three years ago)

That in part is what this thread will determine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I can give you a ride, Chaki. Where do you live? West LA? I can't remember.

Yes, I am up for all this. I love Pasadena.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Hurrah! Looks like we're going to try and aim for a start time food wise between 4 to 6 pm. Chris also confirms plenty of dive bars in the area for some honest-to-god FAPing as needed. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Just so folks know what the hell I'm talking about, here's the LA Weekly review of Cafe Atlantic. I've been eating there three weekends in a row - YES, it's that good. OK, Pasadena might be a little bit far for folks, but Cafe Atlantic is very inexpensive plus there's a several dive bars within walking distance on Colorado available if/when is becomes necessary.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 07:14 (twenty-three years ago)

One time, a friend of mine had no other choice on a Sunday late morning than to eat at Hooter's in downtown Pasadena, because everything else -- for whatever reason -- was closed that morning.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 07:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Dang it---
"if/when IT becomes necessary"

One of these days I'll post something gramatically correct.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 07:16 (twenty-three years ago)

So what you're saying, DB, is that we should all go to Hooters. WELL.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 07:22 (twenty-three years ago)

where's "Pasadena"?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 07:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Pasadena rocks! Well, actually it doesn't rock but I like it. I guess if I can't make this one I'll never make any FAP. And if worse comes to worse people can sleep on my floor.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 09:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I think this is beyond the reach of the London tube system, so I can't make it, I'm afraid.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Dang it, Martin, improve your powers of teleportation.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Improve? Are you under the impression that I have such powers, just not stretching to 8,000 miles or whatever it is?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

stretching to 8,000 miles

Plastic Man!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

well if we're talking Pasadena for dinner, then perhaps we should visit one of the museums up there instead ...

stripey, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure this Pasadena place is good, but isn't El Coyote more festive?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

and cheaper?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Chris sez further up the thread that it's inexpensive at the Cafe, there's that. Stripey does bring up a good point, though -- personally I have no problem with refiguring our day around Pasadena itself, but I do know Stripey did want to visit LACMA in particular, so keeping it more LA focused might be the best thing on the day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

(Disclaimer: actually, LACMA might not need to be the chief focus -- so basically, chime in and let's figure this out some more. Possibly two separate events, one LA, one Pasadena, one on the 30th, one for the next FAP? Debate as desired.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

old town pasadena has some cool record shops if i remember correctly

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The food at Cafe Atlantic far surpasses El Coyote

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but is it as fun/festive? I was thinking we could sit outside at El Coyote. Also margaritas are $4.50 and a full meal is like $6...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

and im a po ass mo fo

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno, where does Nick Graham want to go? I don't care one way or the other. Though I had my first meal in LA at El Coyote (and Sharon Tate had her last, I'm sure you all know that) so I feel all sentimental about it.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

we can go to VITELLOS in noho! just dont leave your gun inside.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick is pretty much up for anything last I checked, but I'll ask her when she arrives.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Cafe Atlantic is basically a straight-up restaurant. Since it's a block away from the Old Town Pasadena stretch of Colorado, there's any number of carousing possibilities. And heck, the 35er on Colorado is one of the best dive bars in town!

If it's going to be a hassle for folks (I'm not going to LACMA or Amoeba), I'll turn down my Cafe Atl. militancy.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Thursday, 20 March 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, I'm Cafe Atlantic curious and will meet you there anytime. I just think that for an FAP, El Coyote or something similarly cheap and festive might be better for some.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 20 March 2003 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Pasadena has the Norton Simon museum, which is currently featuring the Galka Scheyer collection - Klee, Kandinsky, Jawlensky, and Feininger (the Blue Four). Record store-wise, Moby Disk has closed, so Penny Lane is the only one in old town now, I think. It's good enough but not something to go out of your way for. I like PooBah's Records but it's not walkable from Cafe Atlantic. I wouldn't mind going to El Coyote.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 20 March 2003 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

What do you mean first proper LA FAP Ned? You guys have been fapping like rabbits all winter:)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 20 March 2003 07:04 (twenty-three years ago)

As in, getting all of us together real proper like in LA itself -- or near it, if we do Pasadena. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 March 2003 07:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Aloha...I live. Chaki, if you are po', I can certainly empathise. As Mr. R. says, I'm up for anything, Fun will be seeing whether L.A. or Pasadena wins. Whichever. Just don't forget the strippers.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 22 March 2003 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

REVIVE REVIVE REVIVE.

Just talked with Nichole on the phone -- she prefers LA, so LA it is. Again, the three of us are going to do the LACMA etc. thing first -- join us if you like! But unless there's a major push otherwise, El Coyote is the FAP location of choice, it seems. Shall we decide on a time -- 5, 6 pm? Do they also serve food there?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 March 2003 06:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I will be there! El Coyote is a restaurant with cheap eats!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 March 2003 06:17 (twenty-three years ago)

It is good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 March 2003 06:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll arbitrarily declare 5pm at El Coyote.

Anyone say nay?

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 29 March 2003 06:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Sounds good to me.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 29 March 2003 06:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i want to come to this, but I just don't know yet.

If I do, i think all I can afford is the water. I heard it's a bit tappy at times, but alright.

Vic, Saturday, 29 March 2003 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

It is rock. Directions?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 March 2003 08:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i might not be able to make it for i am playing in my grooverock band at the joint (in la which might be close to the place)

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 29 March 2003 08:25 (twenty-three years ago)

:-( Invite your grooverock band along, darn it! Besides, people must have Chakibuttons.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 March 2003 08:28 (twenty-three years ago)

you can't spell RAWK without Chaki! and Vic!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 29 March 2003 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Vic, I'll buy you a drink. The Joint's not to far from El Coyote, Chaki. 5 to 10 minutes, I think.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 29 March 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

if anyone wants to have a preFAP FAP tonight, Rose for Bohdan and Wolf eyes are playing at a house party on Western. hit me up for directions! :)

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 29 March 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

OKAY I weally weally need to drink my troubles away so i'ma bringing my sass and my chappedlips and I'ma comin 2 coyotE tommorrow. Tonight i gotta go to a student philm screening thing so no preFAP FAP 4 me "TOMMORROW TOMMORW ITS ONLY A DAY AWAY" -Annie

Vik, Saturday, 29 March 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

5 is good for me. What time are people going to LACMA?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Right now I think we'll be on the road from my place to LACMA around noonish, so I'd guess we'd be there around one or so. This may change. Spencer, shoot me off your phone number again and I'll call you when we leave.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Whaddya know? This FAP looks like it will survive. More weekend mayhem? Bring it on!

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 March 2003 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

5 sounds good - I think I can do that, though it may be more like 5:30 or 6

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 29 March 2003 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Just to reconfirm -- we're talking about this El Coyote here and not the one in beautiful downtown Burbank, I trust.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 March 2003 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to see Ned howl!!!!!!

Every now and then, a restaurant's popularity transcends its lackluster reputation. Nowhere is this phenomenon more evident than at the extraordinarily popular El Coyote, a die-hard institution that's been packing in the partiers for decades -- though most concede that the bland, gringo-style Mexican food is stuck in a time warp. But who comes for the food? Coyote fans march to a different mariachi beat and howl into the wee hours for radioactive-grade margaritas and combo plates so cheap that a quick sweep of the sofa cushions ought to be enough to fund a visit.

The scene at El Coyote takes on a casting call atmosphere at night, when the place starts crawling with young Hollywood glamour brats, who fill the booths and cocktail lounge, needing to be noticed. Those looking to skip the food in favor of a liquid diet won't be disappointed by the funky rectangular cocktail room with its Mexican tile walls, 30s era bar garlanded in Christmas lights and enough booths and tables to accommodate about 40 thirsty souls. Margaritas are the libation of choice, and some call them the best in town. They come in both the house variety and fruity flavors like melon and strawberry, and are always strong enough to trick you into thinking you ordered a double. -- Mikael Romano

Vik, Sunday, 30 March 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Do they have a parking lot? Have the neighborhood streets become permit-only? I seem to remember that the last time I went to the New Beverly theater. Although I suppose it'll be easy to find spots on Beverly at 5.

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 30 March 2003 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

this is the correct El Coyote on Beverly. There's a parking lot that charges a couple bucks or you can park on Oakwood which runs parallel to Beverly one block north or on Alta Vista which is two blocks east. Make sure to check the signs if you park on any street as they do ticket on Sundays and the rules change from block to block.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 30 March 2003 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

or yeah, park on Beverly if you see a spot.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 30 March 2003 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it may b more like 6 fo me too...but i will make up for this by bringing something very amusing (aside from my face). Promise. I will not be wearin contacts since i never do so just look out for the person squinting and bumping into people, and style Ned's hair in a fashion so that it's visible from afar. And yell.

Vik, Sunday, 30 March 2003 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

We'll figure it out. See you then!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 30 March 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway, Stripey, Nick and I are about off to LACMA -- we'll see everyone tonight at one point or another!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 30 March 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

yay!

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 30 March 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

but, what is everyone wearing?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 30 March 2003 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

It's LA. Probably whatever they hiked Runyon Canyon in this morning.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 30 March 2003 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I bet Spencer hikes in Armani.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 30 March 2003 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

what exactly is "hiking"?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

oh snap, I thought you knew.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

So who was best dressed tonight, Spencer? I vote Nichole, I think . I was wearing brown Carhartt jeans and a green and brown checked shirt. I had the most margaritas, I'm so hard.

Anyway, was GREAT meeting you Nichole and Nickn, lovely to see everybody else again. And Chaki and Vic and Luna, we all missed you.

Young Hollywood Glamour Brat (Arthur), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I am seething with envy.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I was wearing a mostly light blue striped button-down "out" over blue jeans with black mandals. I put away my amber aviators before I walked in so you couldn't get the full King's Road effect...

It was rad seeing everyone although like I said, we need to up the ante on debauchery to compete with NYCerz. Brass Monkey's where it's at!

also, I got a call from Vic who couldn't find us in the back which is a bummer. I hope Chaki and Luna didn't run into the same problem...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Unfortunately, I wish I had an excuse that good - I went to the beach this morning with my son and then we came home and spent the day lounging around - he went to my mom's and I um.. well, fell asleep until nearly 8.

Oops.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Like I was saying, if we really want to up the ante on demolition drinking then there's also the Red Lion too.

Oh, and I was wearing a white button-down with blue jeans...

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

And it was awesome to see everyone!

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Red Lion = sausage fest. We're there.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

arrr i wish i could've stayed for a day longer, i've got blacker mandals than anybody i'm so hard!

tracer pirate (tracerhand), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:30 (twenty-three years ago)

also, I got a call from Vic who couldn't find us in the back which is a bummer.

:(

THERE'S A BACK?

This shall totally make history in the ilx-FAP stupidity books:

I got there at 6:15...walked around, couldn't find anyone...walked around more...went outside and sat on the bench...started laughing at my idiocy very loudly...called Mr. Chow's phone saing i was sitting on the bench outside at 6:26...tried to avoid looking "nervous" that i was all alone and missing my party..walked back inside, tried to look for everyone, squinting here and there and almost running over a senorita-waitress...came back out, sat back on the bench, started reading this book i brought that would have been a conversational piece at the FAP...walked back inside and asked the man if there was a "party for Ragget?" to which he said "um, NO"..walked around more, this time making it to that courtyard thingee...came back outside and sat on the bench and hoped i would run into chaki who was also supposed to come late?and so imagined every hot girl from a distance was his ravishing s.o katie...went back inside, walked around hoping no one would bump into me and ask "why do you keep loitering around here," so i wouldn't have to say "oh, i'm, um, looking for my internet-friends, sorry,"...started getting tired so went back out and tried to read but overheard this yuppie talk about this guy whose priorities were only "his work, his friends, the gym, THEN you," on her cellphone...started hanging out at the door, decided i felt to stupid to waste $ on margarita-drinking-alone since i still had to pay the valet ...then went back and sat down in resignation that some ilxer would see me sitting there all meek and scholarly reading my book...when i looked at my watch and saw that it was quarter to 8, i figured i have to get going!...

I'M SORRY~!!!!!!!!!

yet it wasn't a wasted night at all - i went with some friends to Halal's and then hung out at mah old ghetto/"alma mater" until 3 am. BUT I WOULD HAVE RATHER SPENT IT WITH YOU FUXORS :(

Vik, Monday, 31 March 2003 09:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and I was wearing a red button-down and my hair is black these days

Vik, Monday, 31 March 2003 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Should have asked for my first name, m'friend! Sorry to hear that! There will be other times. :-)

Indeed, besides saying how cool it was to see everyone, and to meet NickN for the first time, that we are not only vaguely planning some meetups next month but looking ahead to the next really big FAP, when Gareth visits at the end of May. He's suggested Saturday the 31st for one, and Chris Barrus and I are agreed on Castaways as the perfect spot for such a FAP.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Vik!, I went to the front several times to look for stragglers! I even had them add "ILX" to "Ned". Oh well, I'm glad to hear your evening wasn't a complete bust.

As for the Gareth Left Coast blowout, I'll be honest and say that Castaways is way too expensive for anyone on a budget. I love the place, but it's where I might go when my folks are buying. If that's the restaurant plan, then there really ought to be a confirmed after dinner bar where those that can't afford dinner can spend their precious funds on more important things, like Martinis!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I was thinking more straight up drinks there than food -- the only other time I was there that was the plan, and it worked well. We can debate this as needed. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

In that case, I like it. but Karaoke at the Brass Monkey would rule too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

oh no! mandals! oh no!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

PHEAR my toes!
http://www.kennethcole.com/img/prod/KM23057LE.jpg

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

ACK!!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I was wearing a greenish button-down shirt (lots of buttoned-down people apparently) with Levis, and I'm so hard I'm wearing it today at work as well! Don't feel too bad, Vic, it took me my third swing through the place before I found the back, back, BACK room. It's very labiryn, laberynth, laber, uh, it's like a maze in there!

nickn (nickn), Monday, 31 March 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and Chris, can you that info to my at the above address (take the "y" out).

nickn (nickn), Monday, 31 March 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

"that info to my " = send that info to me"

nickn (nickn), Monday, 31 March 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Long skirt in dark blue, henley-style sweater with two buttons undone, stripey tee circa 1992 peeking out underneath, pair of shoes that could be described as "practical" if not for scuff-marks and two-inch platforms.

You may have overheard me enthusing about Spain, meditating on the ingredients of a good salsa, admitting that I liked "Let's Dance" better than some early Bowie, offering to pitch in to revive the MBV site, explaining my aversion to having my image and name on the 'net, quipping about how in Los Angeles there are only two sizes : XL and XS.

You might have noticed that I was drinking tea, not alcohol. That I'd brought a backpack with me (it kept falling on Spencer's foot). That I'd finished only half my burrito, but devoured several bowls of chips. Or that I bit my fingernails. Or that I had ink stains on my left hand.

Or you might not.

(But now you'll have enough info to spot me at our next FAP)
