I Am Attacking Alaska from Kamchatka

All this geopolitical talk has gotten me re-interested in Risk, so I'm going to look for an online version or something...

But does anyone have any good strategies? Which are the most vital territories?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I usually like to go for S.America first, then try to expand into N.America.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I go for the australia region because it's super easy to defend. Though I read that there are some newfangled versions that people have adopted that allow some sort of Brazil-New Zealand linkage!

Lord of the Rings risk is good, but not as good as normal Risk.

marianna, Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:09 (twenty-three years ago)

If you can, always try to get Australia, which is really easy to defend through Indonesia. However, this is useless if your mission is to conquer America or something, but it's a good general strategy. South America is good too, but Europe is a nightmare to hold onto.

My mother is really good at RISK - fear the black armies of statistical doom! Also one of my housemates is insanely competitive and gets het up over it. Blimey. 'S a bit boring, to be honest.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooooh, Lord of the Rings risk? I should check it out.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I do like spending all my resources on capturing and defending Australasia. I MUST HAVE MY TWO EXTRA ARMIES. Europe is never worth bothering with unless you really have to. North America is much easier to keep. But it all depends on your missions (if you are playing with those). In my experience, some missions are intrinsically harder than others. And if there is another players whose mission it is to wipe you out, then you're pretty much screwed.

Don't listen to me though - I am crap at Risk.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

But the thing about Australia is you might expend too many of your armies defending it from attack via Siam, and there really is little room for expansion since conquering all of Asia is nearly impossible... I dunno, hmm.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Lord of the Rings RISK is a bit of novelty game tho - there are loads of extra rules and the map takes a bit of getting used to. It looks like there is room at the bottom of the board for a Return of the King add-on board w/ Gondor and Mordor!

Alasdair bought me it for a gift and I had to teach him the rules of RISK play etc. My many years of RISK play didn't help me in the face of these new complex lord of the rings setting and he whooped my ass!

LOTR war joke:

Q: What has Gollum got in his pocketses?
A: His armieses.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Ukraine is a complete bitch too since it borders like 8 other territories.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 20 March 2003 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

>Ukraine is a complete bitch too since it borders like 8 other territories.

How dare you say Ukraine is weak? Ukraine is strong!

I remember thinking Risk was the most amazing game in the world the first time I played it. OK, so I was quite young, but still. some rellies of mine had it, and when we went to visit them I would get all excited that someone would say "So, DV, fancy a game of Risk?".

I think the fact that we always had to leave before the mindnumbing tedium that is a game of Risk played to conclusion prevented me from realising how flawed as a game Risk is.

Have you ever played Shogun? It's kind of like Risk, but has the rules tweaked to make it finite in duration. Plus it has loads of really cool little counters.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 20 March 2003 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never played Risk. I feel like I'm missing out.

chris (chris), Thursday, 20 March 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

YOU ARE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 March 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

My crazy friend Alan (who IS Kramer) plays Risk by himself when he's really bored and lonely.

South America is definitely the way to go cuz then you can spread into Africa while stockpiling armies to protect your nothern flank. I found an online risk game a while ago where you play against the computer but the AI is horrible and it's almost impossible NOT to win. I wonder if Yahoo games has Risk... they should.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 20 March 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan in unintentional Gary Numan imitation shockah!

"YOU ARE...YOU ARE...(synth howl)"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 March 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

World domination is a lot more fun when the only potential damage is to little plastic roman numerals.

hstencil, Thursday, 20 March 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Critique of N.'s LOTRR joke:

(i) what sort of pocket do you (or Gollum for that matter) keep your arms in? Shouldn't the joke be sleeveses?

(ii) it's been a long time but does Gollum actually have an army of any kind?

That barely getts a C I'm afraid, N.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know - it is kind of deliberately rubbish you know, like how that can be funny. In spurious defence, I would say that:

(i) It had to be pocketses cause as I recall that's what Gollum says in the Hobbit ("What's it got in its pocketses?")

(ii) No, I don't think so, but Hitler did and that is the joke. Anyway, this is Lord Of The Rings Risk we are talking about here. Multiple levels of fantasy are already in place.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Oooh, has anyone played Settlers of Katan? It totally owns Risk. I was at my friends house and he broke out the boardgame and I broke out the salty look on my face and was like, "you're kidding".. But it was FUN!

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Well that really rather dispirited defence ups your grade from 'barely a C' to 'a mediocre C'.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Risk is too simplistic.

Katan is good, so is Axis and Allies. Never played Shogun or Fortress Ameerica. Then there is all the hardcore wargaming stuff, which is often just an excuse to have lots of kewl miniatures and green foam scenery.

fletrejet, Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I always found Risk to be really boring. But I've heard good things about Katan so I'm curious. But I'm just not that good at war/strategy games, so...

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

My crazy friend Alan (who IS Kramer) plays Risk by himself when he's really bored and lonely.

When I was young and bored and lonely I would play Stratego by myself. Ugh.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Katan has a very easy learning curve. Takes a few minutes to learn, really. In about half-an-hour you'll be shouting, "YOU STOLE MY WHEAT! BASTARD!". Buy it

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

When I was young and bored and lonely I would play Stratego by myself. Ugh.

I had electronic stratego... you could play that by yourself and actually be sort of fun

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Risk coming out on the xbox.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

My strategy: get austria right away, then go for south america and then expand into africa and then europe and asia and america.
Did you find any good online versions?
Also does anyone know of any online Stratego?

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I really really really want to play Stratego online
