What are the exact origins of the phrase "a red-headed stepchild"?

My girlfriend is one of these, and this phrase really pisses her off.

It probably refers to someone who had strawberry blond of ginger hair who was the child of your new spouses previous marriages - in as much as you assume a degree of responsibility without having genetic parentage.
