okay, i've tried to drop the hint in a couple of threads...

this'll sound like i'm five, but i'm lonely! please pay attention to me!

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not normally this desperate...honest...

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Get chatting to someone on one of the other more active threads. Or maybe start a conversational one - I suppose it should be *about* something. Hope you're ok? I've gotta run now... the others'll keep you company though!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi!

hstencil, Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Cybele... you're lovely!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

*why didn't I start a thread like this??*

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, so i live in kingston, jamaica. what fun things can i do here? (this assuming that very few of you have been to ja)

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

thank you aaron...

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

A Very Large Picture

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Lara, you're lovely too!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry, I had no idea it would be so huge. :(

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

buy me some old 45s, perhaps?

Where are you from originally?

(thanks for the life-size image nick)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay!

Ooooh - great lip action!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

my lovely jamaican connection can't download things that fast...

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

>okay, so i live in kingston, jamaica. what fun things can i do here? (this assuming that very few of you have been to ja)

I heard they grow a lot of that wacky tobacky down there.

fletrejet, Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

It's cool, cybele! Lots of people start threads like this one.

like Anthony
and jess
and mike (ro)bott

and I did one called NEWBIE that I like to revive sometimes...
and many many more...
and they all lived happily ever after, etc. etc.
Amen.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry, I had no idea it would be so huge. :(

You'd make a terrible porn actor, Nick.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm a montrealer. but i came to ja to do development work--i work for a disaster research organization, but it is sometimes, hell, most of the time, quite frustrating. i've been here for a while, but it seems that my sparkling personality is more, well, appreciated in the cold than in the heat.

i can, however, get more reggae 45s than anyone could ever ask for or imagine!

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry Cybele. I thought it was gonna be a wee teeny tiny little picture.

Welcome Cybele! How's the weather in Kingston? (I'm guessing pretty nice...)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Cybele, do you know the Stereolab song "Cybele's Reverie"? That song rules, and I can play it perfectly on my Casio.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

jaymc i'd like to hear that, 'cybele's reverie' is the best song i've heard in the last 6 months

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i suppose another good thing about kingston is the fact that a couple grams of that wacky-tabacky goes for the equivalent of 75 cents US.

oh, and yes, i love that stereolab song. that's where i gots the name. that and its a synonym for "so nice" in french...

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

And yes, yay to Cybele. :-) Post more! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i think i'm going to need a titch of the ki-ki after today. i know some bizarre rasta guy who calls himself "manifes" ("because me always gettin' by") who will doll it out for free...

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha, yeah, I once played "Cybele's" on keyboard at an all-Stereolab/Bjork open mic night. Sadly, no recordings, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

*smiles goofily to try to hide the envy*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

So...are the 'goods' really better down there?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, much. and it seems to smell so much nicer as well.

thing is, if you want to procure ganja, and if you're me, it's rather difficult. it means braving the streets by myself...as a chick, this is not the most fun thing in the world. think construction worker catcalls x a million.

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

couldn't you hang out where the cruise ships dock? My friend went to Kingston awhile back and said he was propositioned almost as soon as he set foot on land

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

cruise ships haven't docked here in quite some time...and that would entail going downtown. downtown is one too many goats away from normal. it's teeming with people, animals, loud music, carts stocked with you name it...

oh, and i'm white as snow, so i stand out like a sore thumb...i see maybe 3 or 4 other white folk a day. staring at me is a favourite thing of a lot of people here...it's weird for me, because i'm not used to such a homogenous society.

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

respect, mon!

i'm told that's how you say hello in jamaica. sorry you're lonely. i wish i were in montreal too.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

"wha' gwaan?"
-my favourite greeting here...

mookieproof...when were you last there?

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

hip hip hooray for cybele! on his magical attentioning day!

(you are a dude?)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

i was there last in november--it's a great city. did you grow up there?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

jel, cybele is a girl!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

have you ever heard that stereolab song? ;)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i grew up in oshawa, just outside of toronto, but i lived in montreal for about 10 years before i came here. oblige me...what bars did you go to when you were there? hear any good music? see any bands/djs?

oh, and just to make things clear, i'm a girl, but cybele is a lovely name for a boy--i'll have to remember that...

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

opps! sorry! As a moderator (part-time) I could change my faux paus, but I won't.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

and yes, i love stereolab--especially "emperor tomato ketchup."

cybele, Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Toronto AND Montreal... I don't remember many of the bars in Montreal but there was one which brewed its own beer which was near the bus station. That one was cool.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I assumed from the beginning of the thread that Cybele was a girl -- but now realize that she didn't actually tell us that explicitly. I just figured it was a girl's name. Why were you so sure, Nick?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Shame on you jaymc: it means braving the streets by myself...as a chick, this is not the most fun thing in the world

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Why were you so sure, Nick?

*cough*

...thing is, if you want to procure ganja, and if you're me, it's rather difficult. it means braving the streets by myself...as a chick, this is not the most fun thing in the world. think construction worker catcalls x a million.

-- cybele (noemailatpresen...), March 20th, 2003.

Damn your fleet fingers Oops!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i spent a term at mcgill eleven (!) years ago. (and i've heard of oshawa because i think eric lindros played junior hockey there...) at the time i was poor and musically ignorant, so i didn't go out as much as i should have. i do remember my friends taking me to several different peel pubs on my birthday because they would give you a free pitcher, though...sadly the peel pubs are no more.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn your sloppy skimming through the thread, Jaymc!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Cybele, I'm a Mtler--an acquaintance of mine just took off for Kingston. I wish I could remember what for--what're you doing there?

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Mookieproof--sadly, a Peel Pub still exists.

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I need attention too. I thought maybe a nude photo would do it, but then I realised I was *horribly* wrong...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

ChristineSH, you're lovely too! You don't need to post that nude photo (but you could if you wanted to).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Hiya Cybele! Welcome to ILX. Do you have AIM (America Online's chat program)?

I went to Jamaica (Montego Bay area) several years ago. Funny, just yesterday I was remembering going to a coffee and fruit plantation, where I ate some of the best pineapple ever. Never mind smokables, I'd love to be able to get some of that fruit up here in Washington, DC.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to mention they also grow some of the best coffee on Earth.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Cybele, I've been to Jamaica, and indeed to Kingston, which I didn't much like, and I think I'd be pretty scared in large parts of it, as an obvious tourist. I don't understand how getting ganja is difficult, since we couldn't go anywhere at all without being offered it - admittedly poor stuff at stupid prices, but everyone was trying to sell it to us. We had someone trying very hard to sell us weed before we were out of the main airport building!

Try to inculcate in the people there the idea of the secondhand record store! As far as I could tell, including lots of looking and asking in like 30 different music stores, these don't exist! What happens to all those fantastic old records? I had to keep explaining the concept to people who said "Hey, that's a good idea". I had so wanted to buy loads of old reggae records while there. (I did buy a few anyway, but not many.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

All got sent off to UK, maybe?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Were you the cybele at ECW Press before?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

A lot of those old reggae 45s ended up in Shepherd's Bush/Ladbrooke Grove - I know, I saw 'em. And today I saw a whole run of 'reggae sevens' in the Berwick St. R+T Exchange.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry--I had to take off from work yesterday rather quickly. I'm in a constant argument with the people here about the technology...

Just thought I'd answer Martin re: secondhand record stores. There's a store called Randy's--Randy Chin-the same guy who started Randy's records in NYC--downtown (i.e. the place where it isn't necessarily the wisest place to wander around) and they stock only old records. You can get copies of the first pressing of Bob Marley 45s,for instance, or, should U-Roy be more your thing...they open up the back room on Saturdays and, if you're will to get yourself covered in dust, you can really get a hold of some gems.

Mr. Noodles, yup that's me. I quit ECW last year...

Slutsky...you know me. Howz tricks in Montreal? Say hi to Scott for me if you see him 'round the office...

cybele, Friday, 21 March 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit! That's very funny. I had actually entertained the thought that you were actually the acquaintance I mentioned. How's it going?

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 21 March 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Its a small small world after all.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

No one in Jamaica, including people in record stores in downtown Kingston, seemed to know about that place when I was there, which was about 4-5 years back, Cybele.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 22 March 2003 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe they were confused by the 'second hand' terminology (though in that case it is disrurbing that they thought it 'a good idea' - perhaps they were just humouring the insane white man)

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 22 March 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)
