Inspired by the purchase os Saurkraut to make my 'dogs' tastier and failing miserably.

What is the best accompaniment to food, mustard, garlic bread, salad, tomato ketchup?

Realising it depends on the food but there must be some kind of hierachy. Currently i would say .......fruity sauce

james (james), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Green Tabasco sauce.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Fresh cut ginger.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Olive tapenade.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

james (james), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

THANKS!

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

OW MY FREAKIN' EARS!

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

(PS I know Green Tabasco sauce isn't that hot, but I am a wuss, and imagining that I like hot sauce because I like Green Tabasco sauce reaffirms my masculinity. Please don't destroy the illusion.)

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Pesto Pesto Pesto!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Beet horseradish relish.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oooh yeah...I've bought this garlic n pesto spread/sauce thingee a few weeks ago. Gives marinara on pasta a run for its money

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Marinara can go fuck itself.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Srihacha or whatever that Vietnamese stuff with the Rooster on it OWNZ!!!!

hstencil, Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

is marinara the clam sauce - if so i want to love that so much but when i had it - goddamn i hated that shit

james (james), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I never!...

marinara (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

No, marinara's just plain red sauce. Although I probably got ahead of myself, because I do like all of those gourmet red sauces, like Roasted Red Pepper & Garlic, etc. It's just that the phrase "marinara" usually makes me think of cheap, watery stuff.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

fondue = a meal made out of accompaniments. yay.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried to give it a good connotation by using 'marinara' rather than 'tomato', which I associate with Prego/Ragu. The least I'd settle for is some 5 Brothers.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

YUMMY DELICIOUS HOT SAUCE. I can DRINK hot sauce. You wanna take me on? No you don't, fuckers.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Prego/Ragu serves very well as the base for my kick-ass spaghetti sauce.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

You should try 5 Bros (if they got it in Boston)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

thats-a spicy meatball

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i always thought ragu was the tomato base for many sauces, is the ragu/marinara a regional dialect issue that the two sauces need to resolve in their own time?, what is the clam sauce then?

james (james), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't Ragu a brand?!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Ragu is a brand of tomato/spaghetti sauce in the US.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I used to think that Five Brothers was unworthy of my kitchen (because it's sold at Dominick's, I guess?), but then found it to be surprisingly good.

Where's Amateurist so he can pontificate on the relative merits of the two sauces at Pita Inn (red and white)?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

A coating of very sugary syrup improves almost anything. Besides food, I include everyone here in that statement.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that what is causing the ragu/marinara confusion? "Ragu" can mean meat sauce OR the brand "Ragu". Marinara means marinara. HOWEVER "Ragu" the brand makes a marinara sauce.

MARINARA IS NOT AN ACCOMPANYMENT BY THE WAY.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Salsa, I put it on everything. And jalapenos spice up any mouth shindig.

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

WHAT THE HELL IS IT THEN? AREN'T SAUCES USU ACCOMPANIED BY SOMETHING?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

when i was in italy i ordered ragu - not the jar stuff but a tomato base, i was a touch miffed - being young i expected bolognase (with meat) therefore i believe now 'Ragu' named there product after the italian term ragu meaning tomato base (i think)

james (james), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I HAVE EATEN SPAGHETTI SAUCE STRAIGHT WITH A SPOON BECAUSE I HAD NOTHING ELSE TO EAT, IT IS A MEAL IN AND OF ITSELF, SHUT UP.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Mario Batali to thread!

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

olive tapanade 2nded.

isadora (isadora), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Let us now praise sriracha sauce. FOREVER.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sriracha is indeed great. I am also a big fan of Tapatio hot sauce.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Sadly, I have also eaten spaghetti sauce from the jar. The trick, though, is to find a lonely vegetable in the fridge and then chop it up and throw it into the sauce. Then you can sautee it and pretend that it's ratatouille.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Cholula for a non-salsa, non-rooster hot sauce roxor.

YOU ARE ALL HIPPIES

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I beg your pardon. I'm just Mexican.

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasabi is NOT GOOD.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasabi is FOOD OF THE GODS. I eat my wasabi straight.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan is so manly he smears it in his jock.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasabi wouldn't be half as cool if it was called, like, George sauce or something

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

usually i can only eat wasabi after marinading it in chillis and gunpowder first

james (james), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Or if it was some other color than neon fucking green. But hey! That's why wasabi is the TOTAL PACKAGE.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't just EAT wasabi, I BREATH IT. It flows through my very VEINS. I didn't mention it as accompaniment because WASABI IS EVERYTHING THAT I AM.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

you can snort it, Steve-O style

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

LIME PICKLE, LAMERZ. Ahem. Seriously, I wolf the stuff down, with poppadoms or without. God bless my steely gastrointestinal flora.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

FEAR MY WASABI JOCK

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Now _that's_ something you could shout out a car window. Tears streaming down your face all the while.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I would pay money to see it happen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 March 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)
